Movies I saw today:
May. 19th, 2004 01:28 amStarted watching Running Man with H last night, but didn't get too far in as he promptly fell asleep. I watched Red Dragon for the zillionth time because it was on, and stayed up playing Sims until 8 in the morning.
Worked a screening of The Notebook, which is about James Garner falling in love as a young man. Has that same kind of heartwarming quality as Big Fish sans the whimsy. It's from a book by N Sparks and opens in theatres June 24th.
Saw Troy with H. I must tell you that it was pretty damn entertaining to watch. Not to be semi-spoilery, but Patroclus was straight for some reason. So along with Interview with the Vampire, we have 2 films where Brad Pitt is not allowed to explore homoeroticism in his character. Speaking of sex, Orlando Bloom was far and away the most masculine I've ever seen him in a film as the philandering Paris. I suppose that played him that way so there could be no tangible mention of the power of the gods at this time. They are eluded to plenty, but this was definatley a cast of mortals.
Saffron Burrows is actually better looking in real life than the woman who played Helen of Sparta, they did a number on her hair and makeup to make sure she wasn't accidentally the hottest chick in Troy. She also shined as the powerless new mother and wife to Prince Hector.
Brendan Gleeson was intense and great as Helens cuckholded husband, and Brian Cox was the King you love to hate. Brad Pitt was fine as Achilles, but the true star of this film is Eric Bana as Hector, the really smart guy no one listened to. There was also a big horse and a war or something...
The fight scenes were pretty cool and bloody, but not as graphic as say, Gladiator. Still this film gets an R rating with PG=13 style nudity and language. There is also some desecrating of religious temples and allusions to rape, but again, nothing graphic.
Since I had nothing better to do, I stayed around to watch Shrek 2, which opens tomorrow. A nice contrast piece to Troy, this film rocked my socks! Hilarious, clever and damn entertaining. Cool story, fun cast. The addition of John Cleese, Jennifer Saunders, Julie Andrews and Antnio Bandaras to the cast adds up to a swell summer movie treat. And its clean enough to see with your grandma, or the kids you babysit for. And the 3 Blind Mice? Classic.
No need to watch the first one again, just go see this one ASAP.
Thursday night, I'm finally seeing Zero Day, which they have postpones a zillion times:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365960/
As it happens, I don't have another day off until Sunday. Whoa is I.
So if anyon'es looking for me, I'll be at the theatre.
