I made a post earlier which contain Wednes' Very Special Friend of the Week. But sadly, the computer at work ate it somehow (bitch!) and I don't feel like typing it all out again. So you'll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out who this weeks Very Special Friend is.

I just got home after seeing Monster. Unless you live in a cave, you probably already know that this movie stars Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci...two utter babes. You may also know that this film is about the real life case of american female serial killer Aileen Wournos. It was directed by first time feature director Patty Jenkins.

The film is a highly sympathetic portrayal of the killer, really the most sympathetic you can be while still staying true to the evidence. It is also fairly kind to the girlfreind, whom I regard as a total Judas. The film really begs you to take both the feminist position, and to excuse people's actions because of thier troubled pasts. Personally, I think its important that we have sympathy for those who had terrible childhoods. But it's equally important that as adults, we do our best to "get past that shit", as Lee puts it so eloquently in the film.

I think Monster tells you a different side of the story than what you're expecting in many ways. One of the comments i heard about the film before I saw it was that there is a love scene between two glamorous hollywood babes, and it is not arousing at all. Funny, because the men who told me that represent rpecisly the kind of attitude that gets men killed in this film. Ha ha...
I must say i'm a fan of actors who aren't afraid to get down and dirty playing unattracitve people doing things most of the audience doesn't or wouldn't understand. I applaud Jenkins clear statement that you can never know someone's story, even if it tries to mitigate horrible crimes.

Yes, most whoremongering men are probably evil, but we dont' get to go ahead and shoot them...even if we really need a car.

Here, finally is this weeks Very Special Freind of the Week; [livejournal.com profile] civil.

Real name: Jennifer. Place of residence: Washington State
[livejournal.com profile] civil is an amazing and wonderful woman. She is cute, funny, and intelligent. Her journal is filled with news about political and social issues, kitchen talk, and the ongoing saga of the horrible people she is forced to live near. Though I have never met this lady in person, I feel like I know her well from reading her journal for over a year now. We met at [livejournal.com profile] pagan , which is a great place to meet like minded folk, and otherminded folk, and folk you'd never meet in regular life.
Recently, Civil posted about discovering her totem animal...the snail. I thought that was awesome since I am a great fan of the tenacity and understated charm of those wild shelled creatures. Everybody wave to [livejournal.com profile] civil

In other news, my HHB is here in the theatre, seeing a movie with his girlfreind from before.
And for some reason, I'm glad for him.
He really is sorely in need of a life.

My cheque was terribly small this week, and I have to figure out how to get to two different doc appointments on Tuesday afternoon. That will be crazy...
