Me + Mister Potato Head
Jun. 30th, 2002 10:59 amNo, I'm not fornicating with Playskool toys, I'm talking about the most difficult instrument in the know universe, the theremin. Invented by Russian inventor Lev Terman, the theremin was proven to be a beautiful instrument by the worlds only theremin virtuoso to date, Clara Rockmore. I also have a little one.
I became acquainted with the theremin when a snobby buddy of mine bought himself a Moog. Not being snobby, I got H to buy me a pitch-only model from the good people at Theremaniacs. I built it myself using a Mr Potato head as the vessel. Can I play it? Not really.
Do I try? When I'm feel especially competant.
How does it sound? Like Ed Wood should be filming behind me.
As I was explaining to Man_Bites_Dog, I can really only make spacship sounds. It may not sound like much, but you can' really do it with a drum or a kazoo,

The Theremin is historically, the first synthetic musical instrument. Termin also invented color video technology in the 1930's; as well as the listening devise known as "the bug" which governments have been using to invade our privacy ever since.
Termin had a pretty wild life, having been kidnapped and reported dead for over 10 years, while his friends grieved for him. In his biopic, he and Clara Rockmore reunite as really, really old folks. it's pretty sad. It's also sad that the biopic would not have received an R rating, had it not been for Brian Wilson (of beach boys "fame) and his filthy, swearful mouth.
Anyway, next time you come across a theremin, be sure to check it out. Even a little shoddy one is a thing to behold. of course, if you come across one of the rare RCA models--buy it post haste, and sell it to me.
