My (Satur)day.

Laid around in bed extra long today with H. He's so cute.

I got to see Kassy and visit with her at length. It was awesome.

Was given the gift of cheesecake. Ate it. Mmmmmmm.

Watched Secret Window finally. How come nobody told me how bad this movie sucked? Okay, to be fair, Depp and Turturo were fun to watch. And I'm never opposed to the brutal murder of Maria Bello. But please, how could anyone not see that coming? I swear, I've been more suprised by endings in 'Cyclopedia Brown books. By the way, when looking up Sobels books, I notice that they are now spelled EnCyclopedia Brown. I would swear they were not that way when I was a kid. But since all my old books are locked away from me (Fie!) I have no way to check. Anyone?

I daresay the movie redeemed itself with the corn at the very end.
And they will catch Mort, because his watch is in the truck in the water. I thought the films direction was pretty crappy; all the major plotpoints were totally spoonfed to the viewer. Too bad too, as it was a waste of a pretty cool cast. Seems like I may have read that story a long, long time ago. But I'm not sure as I'm not even sure which book it's from. But I used to have a lot of King's short story collections back when I had all my books.

Surprisingly, there is not crap on TV. That is not usually the case on Saturday night. I enjoy Three Musketeers as much as the next guy, but I can only watch it so many times. I do enjoy Oliver Platt though. Even though there's nothing on TV, I've managed to get surprisingly little work done.

I was supposed to key in my edits for Chapter Three, and edit Chapter Four, but I haven't even started yet and it's 4am. Then again, H can't find his keys so I have to stay awake until he gets home. And that won't be for at least six more hours. So if I start right now, I can probably get it done. I'll just see which SNL rerun and maybe play a game of solitaire, and then I'll totally get on it. Honest. ;-}

How: Electrocuted by a weather vane

boosted by a thunder storm while standing
on a tall roof.

What happened: Just before you got married

you caught your fiance smooching the

bride's maid during the rehearsal dinner.

So, you stormed out of the church even though

it was raining, and went up on the roof
to have some "pizza".

Who cared: The Minister, since he got paid

for a wedding and a funeral.

The Secret Window book was better.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a short story, yes? I seem to remember reading it. But some of his stories blend together. Seems like they're all about writers, or drunks, or have dead kids, or hate their wives. And they're all from Maine.

But I still love more than 80% of his horror stuff.

[identity profile] euclideanspace.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...the ending was different in the book. A lot of his stuff seems a bit autobiographical..if you take out all the horror and stuff.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and he's one of the few horror writers to admit his stuff is inspired by his life.

King was the first writer to really get me into reading adult fiction. And into reading more than one book by the same author. Up until that point, I'd just read whatever I took a notion to and don't remember ever reading more than one book written by the same author. When I read Thinner (okay technically that's Bachman), I became instantly addicted. Remained a King fan for years and then around Rose Madder he started losing me. I never finished that one. Matter of fact, I've got three more of his books that I bought since and never finished. Insomnia, The Regulators (yes, I know, Bachman again) and Desperation. Hell, I never even started Desperation.

To be fair, I fell off from reading altogether for the longest. Maybe ten years. I never seemed to have time and when I tried to make time, I'd just fall asleep. I began to get back into it, gradually, about three years ago. There's finally a new King novel that I'm actually interested in reading. That being Cell. Probably not his best but at least it managed to get my attention. I've promised myself I won't buy it until I finish those others first.

One or two of them anyway.

LOL

My King history is pretty much the same except I read Carrie and The Shinning first. Pet Sematary came out while I was in junior high or high school, and it scared the crap out of me. When the kid dies, it was the first time I ever cried reading a book.

I hated the ending of It, didn't finish Geralds Game, and then took a bit of a break after that. I too though, am planning to read Cell at some point.

Hmm, I don't remember that movie sucking that bad. But I had just read the SK story, and I remember that there were differences that I didn't like. I believe its from Four Past Midnight.

When I was younger, my brother was big on Encyclopedia Brown books. And the ones I saw back then were always Encyclopedia... I've never seen one say 'Cyclopedia.

Oh yeah, and I remember thinking of Mort's watch immediately, and was surprised that it never came up after that.

Interesting.

Encyclopedia...

A friend and I discussed Secret Window back when I finally got around to seeing it. I told him that I knew what was going to happen when I saw the trailer. So did he. I'm guessing most everyone did. Even so, I kinda enjoyed the movie. As you say, Depp and Turturro are a lot of fun to watch. It's bad alright but not a total waste of time. Predictable but enjoyable just the same.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's very strange like that.
Because I did kinda like watching it.

[identity profile] pyrafire.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed Secret Window, but only because I decided about fifteen minutes in that it was a comedy. ;o)

Seriously, I decided in the first few minutes that it was awful, but it was so awful that it was laughable, so therefore I pretended that it was supposed to be funny.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's weird how I enjoyed watching it even though not one single thing was a surprise. Actually, I thought they'd catch him beofre he killed the ex wife and her beau. So it was kinda good that they didn't.

[identity profile] lickingtoad.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Secret Window was fucking awful. I rather liked the short story; I (used to?) own a compilation with it included, and knew it well. I was even looking forward to seeing Depp as the lead. No such luck, with the 'punking out on the ending' that was ... what? Somehow more intense or objectionable than, say, 'It?' I say nay-nay. Ergo, I just don't get it.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I must admit I was entertained, even though it was obviously a bad movie from the start. I didn't remember I'd read it until the house burned down. But by then I had already figured it out.

Also, I loaned Man Who Laughs to Ryan, he wanted to see it and I couldn't imagine that you'd mind.

[identity profile] stranger-tales.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I completely missed your Encyclopedia Brown reference til just now. A week or so ago I was up in my folks' attic looking for some of my old Horror comics. The bulk of my childhood is up there and memories were running rampant with each item I stumbled upon. Amongst them, several Encyclopedia Brown books.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Nice. Did they say ENcyclopedia or 'Cyclopedia?

[identity profile] stranger-tales.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I won't swear to it because I had this whole knee dislocation situation to deal with but I'm pretty sure they said 'Encylcopedia'.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Dang. I hope I didn't imagine it.

[identity profile] kjtoo.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read many an Encyclopedia Brown book in my day, and some of mine are still at my parents' house. In fact, I peeked at a couple of them the last time I visited. I can say with certainty that the spelling was "Encyclopedia Brown", but this does not mean that it has never been spelled another way. Next time I'm in the U.P. (which should be late May), I'll check the print date on the books.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be cool. This is occupying my mind much more than it should. ;-)

[identity profile] thehula.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"And I'm never opposed to the brutal murder of Maria Bello." Yet another fantastic sentence.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, Sweetie.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
My "Encyclopedia Brown" books all had the EN. In fact that's how I learned to spell the regular word, and I ended up having it in a spelling bee when I was little. I haven't seen it 'Cyclopedia, but it does look cool that way.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
When we briefly discussed this last night, I totally forgot that the entire reason I know how to spell encyclopedia is because of the books. But according to Wiki, it's also "Encyclopedia Brown," as opposed to your hip spelling of it.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh fine, dash all my dreams and my hipness in one foul stroke.

Did you get my email about Dreamweaver?
I want to learn it but don't have a copy.
