Let's not be miserable

I tend to complain a lot here. Lately, it seems I only make time to write in the personal blog is when I'm pissed about something. I need to take some time to focus on something positive--or at least less overtly terrible.

Work has been surprisingly good today. Made a solid day's worth of sales before noon. So that was cool. Thought it was payday when I got up today. It saddened me to realize that today is Tuesday and not Thursday. Still, I've worked enough hours that I should be in for a decent check, even if my bonus is laughably small. Plus, we drew names for the non-denominational season gift give. I didn't get the person I dislike. Yay!

H and I watched the movie based on the novel The Road. I thought it was going to be scary. It has scary moments, but mostly it kicked my ass with heart wrenching drama--and one impossible situation after another. And when I say "impossible," I don't mean I'm having trouble suspending my disbelief. I mean every choice Viggo's character had to make was a clear "damned if you do/n't" situation. Seriously, I felt emotionally exhausted after watching...but damn, it was fantastic. Part drama/part apocalypse/part human interest/part horror. People keep telling me to read the book, but I'm kinda nervous about how it will affect me. That's actually the same reason I have not yet read House of Leaves.

Haven't said much about The Walking Dead. It's well acted, well produced, good cast, great zombie FX. Something about it though is just kind of...ordinary. They do what they do very well, but it's nothing that hasn't been done before. I'm gonna keep watching and all, but I'd like to see something new next season.

Dexter finale was also not entirely unexpected. End of season arcs all wrapped up neatly one way or the other. Not sure I like LaGuerta as a sympathetic character. Not going to post any spoilers, just in case--but I imagine comments will be spoilery so proceed with caution. Also, I guess Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are splitting up. So next season will be a bit less skeevy. yay.

I liked The Road, too. So relentless, though. Man.

*nods* I think that's part of why I like post-apocalyptic tales, too--seeing what happens to people when there's no civilization to speak of and they're left to create their own sense of order (or not).

And Viggo was harsh with everyone. Kinda had to be.
