No Country for Old Men

As per usual, I am one of the last people on the planet to see this movie. It's the one Javier Bardem won the Oscar for, before following up with a romantic comedy. He must be hella versatile, since after seeing No Country for Old Men I can't imagine him as anything else but a cold blooded, strangely witty murderer.

I enjoyed this movie very much; it was extremely tense.

I am not sure why the Coens made the choice to not show Chigur kill Moss. I am told that it isn't "shown" in the book, so they were just keeping with that. At the same time, I feel kind of cheated as a viewer not seeing the exchange.

Frankly, I think Moss made some dumb choices. I would not have taken all the money, I would have taken a few handfuls and left the satchel. Not only would Chigur have been unlikely to go after him, but it would have been much more difficult for Moss to be found. When I found the transmitter, I would have gotten rid of it at once, or maybe run for it. Waiting around seems kind of foolhardy.

I also think Mrs Moss should have called the coin. She didn't have much to lose, after all.
And of course, Chigur is a total badass...

Tonight, H and I will watch Friday's Battlestar Galactica so we can find out who the final cylon is. I thought it was Gaeta until I watched the webisodes. Now I don't know who it is...I feel bad enough for Chief Tyrol, although he's been on my S list since that thing with Gaeta and the airlock 2 seasons ago. Anyway, we're watching tonight.

I loved that movie. Javier Bardem is fan-freakin'-tastic!

I remember you liked it when it first came out. It's a fucking crazy movie...just like everything those Coens do.

I think its because Moss was a hero for a good portion of the book and they didn't want to rob you of the character. I read the book after seeing the movie in hopes of learning some "secrets" but the book doesn't offer any. This movie really made me love Cormac McCarthy. I love his writing style. "He moved up to the gate, opened the gate, walked thru the gate, and closed the gate behind him." If you were in an English Class, your teacher would give you an F for that sentence, but in keeping with what Stephen King said in "On Writing" you write in your own style and sometimes that style even if its technically wrong, can still be right. I think that's what McCarthy did. You should read "The Road". I think you'd really like it. Or even read the book version of this film. Even though there are no great revelations not in the movie, it was still a total joy to read his writing.

As for the coin, the point was to frustrate Chigur.. Calling the coin gives him what he wants. Not calling it does not give him the satisfaction. I think she figured going to her grave, the killer didn't deserve that.

People have been telling me to read McCarthy for a while now. Next time I go out book shopping, I will surely pick some up.

I'm a big fan of styles that do not conform to traditional grammar and such, but only if there's a good reason for it. I think my own writing is enhanced by my lack of adherance to those kind of rules.

'As per usual, I am one of the last people on the planet to see this movie.'

Give me ten to twelve years.
