Press Release

I have a draft of my press release that I need some help on. So if the all of you's could take a look at it and tell me what you think, I'd be most grateful. I haven't written a press release in awhile. I should mention, I'll also have a book Tip Sheet which details the basic facts about the book, ISBN, pages, size, type and an excerpt.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

First time novelist Wednesday Lee Friday's is proud to announce the release of her debut novel A Stabbing for Sadie. StoneGarden.net Publishing has slated the horror thriller for an April 25th release. A Stabbing for Sadie is now available for pre-order at the publishers website: http://www.StoneGarden.net

Thriller and Horror fans will love this gruesome tale of a woman pushed to the edge and beyond. It's a must read for anyone who has doubted their own sanity, and has proven popular with adult readers of many tastes.

Early reviews are filled with praise: "A sometimes terrifying, often intriguing, and always thought provoking glimpse into the mind of Sadie, a victim of child abuse, drugs, and the vagaries of fate as she sinks into mental illness and battles her own special kind of demons. A Stabbing for Sadie is a wonderful journey through the twisted mind of a casualty of abuse, who lives with her own monsters, and fights to survive every day."
StarSight Author, Minnette Meador

Author and Artist James Grant said: "Man, I could NOT stop reading SADIE…It's an outstanding story."

Dan Martin at WAAM called it: "…a frightening reminder that sometimes good people can be pushed to do horrible things. Fantastic!"

When she is not writing, Wednesday Lee Friday enjoys loom knitting, jewelry making, cooking, and playing the dulcimer. She is a graduate of Royal Oak Kimball High School, and Olivet College. Currently she lives in Ann Arbor, MI with her husband, Hollingsworth. Her follow up novel, The Cat's Apprentice will be released later this year. Several of her short stories will appear in the upcoming StoneGarden Anthology, Gems From the Garden.

Just assume it has all the proper underlining and italics.
I don't think I have a handle on WHY people will want to read the book and WHY it's release is actually something newsworthy. Any hints? Should I keep it to one page, or flesh it out with more reviews and fun facts about me?

In other news, I went out to lunch today on the company and got some yummy tacos from Qdoba. Mmmmm...
Also talked with a coworker and confirmed my desire to find a new job. I really like my coworkers, but management needs some serious people-skills development. Anyway, I'm giving a sales presentation on Friday, so wish me luck.

And later, homemade chili for dinner because that's H's fave. I forgot to buy chipotles so I'm using Tio'a salsa and habaneros to spice it up. Mmmmm...again.

Got some new tabulature for ye olde dulcimer. I'm going to try to learn Sloop John B, Beautiful Dreamer, and 900 Miles among others. Should be a blast, I'm amazed that I can actually learn songs on an instrument in something like a reasonable amount of time. I almost never practice for more than half an hour at a time, once or twice a day, and I'm learning a bunch. Part song practice and part "noodling around" (as [livejournal.com profile] peteralway would say) with chords and stuff.

Not sure what's supposed to be in a press release, but it read fine to me for what it's worth :)

Thanks. It's what you send out to newspapers and radio etc to try to get them to do a story about the book. So it has to be grabby and enticing, and still contain enough facts for a short article.

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If this is going out to local media, you might want to at least mention that you are an Ann Arborite.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. I don't really feel like an Ann Arborite though. I guess I've been here over 10 years, so I guess I'm not really an impostor.

Oh, and hurray for learning new songs and the brain expansion that goes with it!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hurray indeed!!

It just occurred to me that with the names Wednesday and Hollingsworth, you two sound like a very interesting and intelligent couple. Not that you aren't, but I would make that assumption just on your very cool names.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I thought H's name was so distinguished when I first heard it. And his middle name is Gordon, which is also a smart-sounding name.

And yeah, we are pretty damn interesting.

Okay, here's me wearing my proofreader hat and throwing in my two cents:

First time novelist Wednesday Lee Friday's--take off the 's.

I would suggest lower case for Horror in Thriller and Horror fans. Usually genres are lower case, unless you're making lists or titling stuff.

One page should be enough, but more fun facts would be good, if you have the space. Newspapers, anyway, don't have a lot of free space, so something concise might stand a better chance of making it in. One page is a good length for radio copy, as well. The reviews you're using are excellent.

Okay, I'm done. Good luck!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Good suggestions all.
Thanks!

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that it should maybe have more stuff about you in it (we all like fun facts), and I think you should take out what HS you went to. Say you are a life long resident of Michigan or something like that, but I'd leave out the HS. I could see it if you were very young and didn't have much else to mention, but you have been away from HS for a year or two, and I think there are millions of other things that would be more impressive to mention in that space.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think should be included that isn't in there? Is there a particular "fun fact" you think is important?

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I would maybe mention that you were originally a theater person. that you have done voice over work, and worked on radio plays. That sort of stuff. Things that aren't terribly common, but people might find interesting.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, cool.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks good. There's a stray apostrophe s towards the beginnning. Have you done any other publicly interesting things in Ann Arbor, like being in a play, or contributing to stuff for Monkey & a Typewriter?

I can see part of the story being,
"Sometimes one door closes, and another door opens...a former employee of the now long gone Madstone Theatre is making a name or herself as an author..."

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really, Ryan was also suggesting I include more facts, but I'm not sure what else would be interesting.

[identity profile] swayworn.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
1. "First-time", when used as an adjective, is hyphenated.

2. I reread enough of the book to finally put a review up!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

And thanks, again!

"It's a must read for anyone who has doubted their own sanity, and has proven popular with adult readers of many tastes. "

This sentence doesn't quite sit well with me. Perhaps it should be split in two (with a bloody knife, no less). But what do I know?

Yeah, I was thinking about reworking that. I'm having a hard time fitting it all on one page.

[identity profile] princezna.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird, I bought your book- went all through the Paypal process and everything... then they emailed me and said that I didn't actually buy it and that the book was just in my cart. So I guess I have to buy it again. I hope it goes through this time! ha!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-12 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so too!

well done
