H surprised me with a trip to the mall today. We picked out our wedding rings and put the deposit down on them. I got the one I wanted, all sparkly and diamondy with some blue sapphires. I won't post a pic because I posted one when I first picked it out. Check out my handfasting tag if you missed it and really want to see it now.
H got a titanium ring which looks good and was very reasonably priced. We also looked at Bulova watches for him, but he thinks they are a needless expense. I thought he might like a big-boy watch since he's a grown man and all. But H thinks spending more than say $100 on a watch is just silly. I admit, he has a point. Then H took me to Godiva for a few truffles, which are my favorite.

The engagement pics yesterday went well. We took a bunch of outside shots, and some of us in the apartment clowning around. It was pretty fun and only took about an hour. Next week or so, I'll have pics to post so's you can all see them.

In more infuriating news, here's a charming story about a teenage girl who was sexually assaulted in a park by three teenage boys. But wait, the girl is fat. So according to the barrister, she was not raped. She was "glad of the attention". I realize that women are often painted as "asking for it" based on many irrelevant factors, but this just kills me. I don't even know what else to say about it; it's so enraging to think anyone would make such an ugly assertion, especially to a victim of such an awful crime.

Mmm, Godiva truffles.

But on the news article, just ugh.

I know, I was pretty much speechless. Do people sit around in a room and think up horrors like that, or do they occur naturally. Either way, I'm sickened by it.

Unfortunately, it's pretty typical of rape cases that I've read about. At least as far as bringing up the clothing and all and blaming the victim. The whole "she wanted the attention because of her looks" thing, though. That's a new slimey take on it I haven't seen before. Attorneys will stoop to anything.

I'm also totally wierded out by the perps being 13 and 14. Damn, that's young. I just can't comprehend a kid that young even wanting to rape someone, let alone doing it. What is up with kids these days?

I suspect there's a certain group dynamic there. One kid probably (hopefully) wouldn't do such a thing, but as a group they cheer each other on. It is awful though, 13 is really young.

*nods* Yeah, I imagine that strange mob mentality thing came into play, too. Any of the boys who really didn't want to, wanted to be harrassed for being a coward less. Ugh.

Any time there's an example of society saying "She asked for it" it makes me ill.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed.
It's disgusting.

Many lawyers will say anything to try and get their clients off. The real test is to see if the jury buys it.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Real test? I don't agree that the jury will neccesarily do the morally correct thing. Just because 12 people agree on something doesn't make it so.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you missed my point. Let me put it this way. A defense attorney making the claim that recently having lost weight might inspire a teenage girl to seek anonymous sex in public is disturbing. However, 12 jurors buying the story would set such a level of fuckedupness that the notion of a defense attorney making the claim would pale in comparison to the point of seeming normal.

Personally I would make a very bad lawyer for clients who I believed to be guilty.

I didn't even finish that story....all I could think was WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THIS?!?!?!?!?!

gah!

*shakes head*

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's pretty awful.

Yay on getting the ring!

I'm with H on watches. I lose or break mine, so I stick with cheap Timex when I even have a watch.

That news story was just so horrific I can barely think of anything to say, except I noted this barrister is defending one of the criminals and therefore I guess "anything goes" ... I hope to holy heck that none of the jurors fall for her arguments, which would absolutely require a psychotic hatred of womankind to be at all believable. I think this barrister is pretty seriously disturbed herself to think these are in any way worthy arguments to make.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can't imagine making such statements in public, or private even. I know her job is to put up a defense, but how can she look at herself?

I am pretty psyched about the ring. ;-]

[identity profile] vjsmom.livejournal.com 2007-05-25 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that news story is unbelievably disgusting. Nothing that I could say would add amything to what's been said already, so I won't comment further.

The rest of your news, however, is good. Congrats on the rings and the pictures!

Thanks!
