Ayudame!!!

Hey kids,

The time has come for me to have a website...some kind of WednesdayLeeFriday.com sort of thing.

How do I get that?
How much does it cost?
Can it be free?

Who, oh who, will design it for me?
Some of you must do this type of thing for a reasonable price.
Or knows someone who does...

Talk to me!

In other news, I'm recording some short stories for podcast instead of my novel at present. That will be good practice until I figure out how novel rights are going to work.
[livejournal.com profile] skryche, (or any other males with a great voice) if you still want to do volunteer voice work for me, do let me know.

If you go to tripod.com, they are free, and anyone can design a site. I can help, or answer questions about making tripod site. As for real ones, I've never made one from scratch.

Yeah...I kinda need a real one with a short address.

Thanks.

Including the three I have currently, I've owned and operated in the neighborhood of eight sites of various shapes and sizes. That includes the crappy GeoCities free site that almost everyone used to start out with. Hosting varies in price, services, support, ease of use and so forth. Personally I've had pretty good luck with StartLogic. http://www.startlogic.com/ They offer quite a bit of bang for the buck, the support is good and I like their admin control setup best of any I've used.

Most hosts (this one included) will cut you a better deal if you pay for a year up front rather than a month at the time. The real difference comes in the setup fee and domain registration that you may be charged. That's usually free with a year's hosting. However, these places do run sales and specials where they waive those feels on certain days.

In the meantime, you can check the availability of possible domain names at http://www.networksolutions.com

Some advice for what it's worth. Don't get a free site. Unless you're eight. Or you don't mind all the crap that goes along with a free site. And there's a ton of it. Don't go with a name so long that it can't be easily remembered or easily jotted down, printed, et cetera. Try to come up with a name that is both catchy and fits your content, persona, whatever it is you want people to visit for. And if you're lucky, someone else won't have beaten you to it.

Also, if you need software for designing and building the site, I can recommend a couple HTML editors and WYSIWYG programs.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the info. I'll def be checking that out.

I have Dreamweaver, I just haven't learned it well enough to use it.

[identity profile] swayworn.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still totally down with doing some voice acting, if you'll have me!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Groovy.

Do you have Quicktime Pro? That's what I'm using to record my voice; then I'll be sending the voice recordings to [livejournal.com profile] madush69 to mix with background music and maybe some spooky theremin sound.

Although I should think there are any number of programs you can use to create sound files. I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] madush69 can wiegh in on that.

[identity profile] swayworn.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I use Audacity, which I have used a number of times for voice recordation.

But I imagine you'll want me to use a good microphone? Can you (or Mr. [livejournal.com profile] madush69) recommend one? I've been meaning to get a decent one for a while.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Dan would know better than I. I'm using one I borrowed from someone competent ;-]

The short story that got picked for the anthology is first person male narrative. The only thing I need to supply is the mom over the answering machine and some random whimpering.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/U87Ai/

You didn't mention a price, but you asked for a good mic, so I present the U87. At least it's not Neumann's expensive mics, just their mid range ones.

If you give me a price range, and what you would be primarily using it for, I can help to point you in the right direction.

[identity profile] swayworn.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Mmkay. What's a good* microphone for someone who will be using it mostly for SingSnap in an apartment whose windows face loud restaurant vents?

* - I was thinking the $40-$50 range.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly in my professional opinion there is absolutely positively no such thing as a good sounding microphone for $40-$50. They just don't exist. There are mics that you can buy for that price, but you'd be better off yelling at people and it would sound better. Remember what a Mr. Microphone sounded like? That's what you get for that price.

The cheapest mic I can recommend with any confidence is the Shure SM58 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=68463&is=REG&addedTroughType=search)It is the industry standard mic. It's good, and stable and sounds fine. It has a broad range and does a lot of things pretty well, but nothing great. They are around $100, but I've seen them as low as $68, just not today.

I hope this helps.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The only good voice mic is the EV RE-20 (pictured).

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Riiiiiiight. Though I'm sure it sounds pretty good. It's certainly it's not the only one. Especially since I've heard the mics we have here and they are beautiful, of course they are almost 10x as much, but that doesn't mean they don't sound good.

Another vote for not getting a free site. If you want to look professional at all, stay away from those. R's and my website's hosted by PowWeb. We've been with them for several years and haven't had any problems. Our website's pretty simple, so I don't know how they'd be with anything more complicated. It's $93 a year with no set-up fee. You can register your domain with them, too. They also have some start up stuff for designing your site.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's all pretty confusing. I'm not even sure I understand the difference between web hosting and a domain name. I've only ever had a geocities site.

[identity profile] stranger-tales.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
The domain is the actual physical address or URL and nothing else. As in www.blahblahblah.com or www.blahblahblah.net and so forth. If you have a mind to, as many folks do, you can register a domain and hold onto it without ever having a site.

Hosting handles the content of a site. Your html files. Your image files. Anything you put on your site, whether others see it or not, has to be hosted somewhere. Think of it as a remote harddrive, the contents of which you access and manipulate in much the same way as you would what's on your pc. Your basic hosting is shared and usually has a Linux based admin panel. Then there's dedicated hosting which is what most big, high traffic sites use.

Here's a page that will hopefully do a better job of explaining all this better than I can.

Hey, it totally does.

Thanks, man.

Yeah, it is confusing to start. Looks like [livejournal.com profile] ds1972 has you covered, though. : )

You can get a domain for around $7 a year from godaddy.com

You can use a free server for the actual site and if you can work with html at least a little bit you can create yourself a nice little starter page.

I started out that way and even used the free 'short urls' I found. That's why I've been using http://katt.onlyhere.net for so long. I only recently bought my own domain.

The guy that made the graphics for my site can be reached at http://differencemedia.nl/ He speaks perfect english and is very nice. His prices are pretty reasonable and very professional. Usually between 100 - 250. He can probably set you up with a server address as well so you won't have to have extra banners/pop ups the free servers require.

I'm sure you'd be blown away by whatever he makes for you. He sure did me.

Hey thanks, that's good info.

You're welcome. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I know a lot about getting things either free or cheap. :D

Thanks!

I'm just hoping I can pull some money together to make this happen. Until then, anyone who googles me get's either my LJ or my Amazon wish list.

Re: sites

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Lol.. well, your LJ page looks pretty good so you must know some html even if its basic. Go ahead and set up a page on a free server somewhere and submit the page to google and yahoo search engines. You can always move the site later and put up a link to the new site.

[identity profile] kissdbyagnome.livejournal.com 2007-01-14 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I did Haunted Hillsdale at directNIC for $20 for a year? That includes reg. the domain name. Once I got the space, I had a logo and graphic contest. The winning graphic/logo got some free merchandise from me. I also posted around for a web mistress and had some people step forward and offer to help me for free. As long as I gave them their props. So i'm sure you can go that route?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-14 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the plan. For now, I'm just going to use LJ as my site since I'm easy to google there; but yeah, eventually I'm gonna have to get a grown-up site. ;-]

I've been checking out your site and doing a bit of research for your press packet. I'll be starting on it as soon as I get some novel editing underway. I just don't want to get behind, especially since they may expect another finished novel from me next year.

[identity profile] kissdbyagnome.livejournal.com 2007-01-14 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, we can talk some more when I see you on Friday. And I totally understand about not wanting to get behind. So many grand things are coming your way, it's fantastic!
