What life is like at our house:

I have this refrigerator magnet of Lilith, that I really loved. I got it from one of those hippy catalogs you get in the mail sometimes, Northern Sun if I'm not mistaken. A week ago, H dropped it and it broke in several pieces. Of course, I was bummed.

Since then, 2 plastic chip clips (different ones I bought at different times) have fallen apart in my hand during routine use. I wondered vaguely if the plastic gods were mad at me, even though there are no plastic gods. Last night, my salt & pepper grinder did the same thing. It made a little crunch and then fell apart in my hand. I'm so bummed, that was a gift from H I've had over 5 years. Then again, five years is pretty good for something you use every single day. Now if I want pepper (I do keep ground salt in the house as well as the rock) I have to bust out a mortar and pestle...which is a lot of work just for pepper on my scrambled eggs.

H wanted waffles, so I told him we needed some buttermilk. I mean, how the hell else do you make waffles? He brought home a half gallon. A half gallon. I have no idea what else to do with all this buttermilk and am totally open to suggestions. I bet there's a bread I could make with it if I can find a good recipe.

Our bathtub was backed up today with some kind of gunk. It messed up our toilet as well, maintenance was giving me shit about coming out. I told them they could wait until tomorrow if they'd rather fix my toilet on Xmas eve. He's on his way right now.

Also, I blame Stephen Colbert for my newfound love of The Decemberists.

When it rains it pours, my friend!!!

To show you my concern and care, I will suggest that you make Buttermilk Biscuits that could go with Biscuits and Gravy or whatever...

May your days brighten or at least empty of shit breaking!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm. Biscuits are indeed a fine idea.

I'm sure this breakage can only consume me for so long, then things will get back to normal. As long as the computer works, I'm reasonably happy. ;-]

Let's hope you didn't just jinx yourself, LOL.

[identity profile] leemoyer.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Does one use buttermilk for challa? If not, pancakes are a fine plan!

I'm delighted to hear that the rascally senor Colbert has made another Decemberists fan. Picaresque is my prohibative favorite, but the band is just so good.
I-Tunes tells me that my favorites are:

We Both Go Down Together
The Sporting Life
Billy Liar
16 Military Wives
The Mariner's Revenge Song
And Eli the Barrow Boy.

Let me know which you are most enjoying.

And as for the Plastic Gods... you have NO idea. Ever since they were summoned by repeated viewings of The Graduate they're everywhere.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! You said "the Graduate". Hilarious.

I am mainly listening to:

Oceanside
Here I thought I was an Architect
Clementine
and that song about California

They kind of remind me of Syd Barret sometimes.

[identity profile] leemoyer.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
As the Shred-Off showed, they are a band of many parts, moods and abilities. Annaliese saw them twice this year (with photos to prove it) and we're proud to have them in town.

And poor dear Syd died this year, so it's fitting here as the year turns that you've found someone to help fill in.

A very happy holidays to you and your man. I'll be having a holiday contest a little later. Watch my LJ for details.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, contest!!!

[identity profile] lostsatellite.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've really only listened to Picaresque so far, but I greatly enjoy the morbid nature of the songs and their use of vocabulary...I'm waiting for their latest album to come in for me at the library...

You know I've recently rediscovered libraries.
They are good, I'm not sure how I forgot that.

'I wondered vaguely if the plastic gods were mad at me, even though there are no plastic gods. '

Blasphemy!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry.
I'll undoubtedly be smoted now.
Smited? Smoten?

I don't know, it might be one of those weird ones where it goes "I'll undoubtedly be smote now."

Buttermilk is good for all sorts of tastiness like pancakes, biscuits, cornbread, mashed potatoes. It's also good for marinating chicken. Mmmm, buttermilk waffles with prosciutto *drool*

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow...you've totally inspired me to make chicken and potatoes (with a nice salad, of course). I forgot all about buttermilk and chicken.

[livejournal.com profile] eroslane's mom is an indiffernt cook at best (flashbacks to tuna steaks charred to bricks) but she's made some really good baked chicken that she marinated in buttermilk. Mmmm, mashers!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-24 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nice.

[identity profile] stranger-tales.livejournal.com 2006-12-24 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the recipe I use for making cornbread.

1 cup white cornmeal self-rising (Martha White preferably)
2 tbsp flour self-rising (ditto on the Martha White)
1 cup buttermilk (preferably the non-lowfat variety)
1 egg (I prefer large but medium will do in a pinch)
1/3 stick margarine (or butter...personally I prefer margarine)

1 9" cast iron skillet

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees or so (you know how your oven works better than I). Combine the cornmeal and flour, add the buttermilk then the egg until well blended. Meanwhile, melt the margarine in the skillet making sure to coat the sides while you're at it. Once melted, combine with the other ingredients then pour back into skillet. (You want this mixture on the thin side. If it's looking too thick after you've added the melted margarine, thin it with a little more buttermilk.) Pop into the oven and bake around 25min or so. Again, much of this will depend on your oven. I give mine the old toothpick test.

If you don't have a cast iron skillet, go buy one. A 9" Lodge skillet already seasoned will only set you back about $10 at Walmart. If absolutely necessary, you can use a cake pan or casserole dish but the taste will suffer because of it.

Nice. That totally gives me an excuse to reseason my cast iron skillet.

Thanks, man.

Alton's overnight cinnamon rolls.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-24 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I've thought about making those a few times.
They look like so much work.

Plus I don't have enough yeast. ;-[

I loved it when he came out with that huge guitar! The only thing I regretted was that he didn't actually play. Of course, he couldn't look week for his nation. :)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-12-24 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wasn't sure which way they were gonna go with that...I'd have liked to see him play. He's a helluva performer, so it wouldn't have surprised me to learn he could shred as well.

Of course, him singing with Barry gave me enough joy to last forever.
