Australia stops cracking jokes about Tim Treadwell...

I woke up this morning to find this news printed by H, sitting on my desk And I was like Hey, is this for real, or is it a gag? And he assures me that it was for real.

The first time I saw Steve Irwin on TV, he jumped into the water from a tiny boat to remove this croc from the water. He finally got it onto this muddy bank, and Terri jumped on the back of the croc (he was on the front) and they didn't have anything to cover it's eyes with. So he told her to tear his shirt off. It was like croc-porn or something. I was embrassed to find it as arousing as I did, frankly. But I never missed an ep after that!

When H and I were really short on cash (because of me, why else) he didn't have much to spend on my birthday gift; so he got me this (the one with the snakes on it) because he knew how much I loved Steve Irwin. And even though this is shouldn't logically be a terrible, horrible shock, it actually is.

A sting ray? A Sting Ray?!?.
This guy has handled the ten deadliest snakes in the world. He swam with sharks, wrestled crocs, and has braved terrains I didn't even like looking at pictures of. And he starred in one of the worst non-horror movies I have ever seen. I can't beleive a stupid little barb is what ended his life. And he wasn't even ten years older than me.

I am pretty sad, even though my doll probably just quadrupled in value.

Steve Irwin probably taught me more about animals than Jacques Cousteau and Jack Hanna put together. Plus, he was nice to look at and really, really brave. I suppose one could say that he didn't respect the danger enough, or the animals enough. If he didn't have tiny kids, I'd say it's cool that he died doing what he loves best, and all is well with the universe.

Since he did, I'll just say "dang" and turn on some Animal Planet.

All internet humor aside, I am really bummed.
Luckily, I have plenty of Croc Hunter Croc Files on tape.

Edit: HA! I just looked to see if anyone else posted about this.
It seems that EVERYONE posted about it.
You people and your opinions...sheesh! (some of you guys are mean)

Ha ha ha... very funny. You and everyone else needs to stop it with this practical joke, it's not funny anymore.

he was awesome.

Yeah, I've been waiting all morning for it to show up on Fake LJ Deaths. But it showed up on Wiki and IMDB instead.

(I've never used a crying emoticon before, it's not as fun as I thought it would be)

Damn, that's sad about the Crocodile Hunter. He has a little daughter too if I am not mistaken. I know he had a reputation as something of a faker early on, but I felt like he clearly loved wild animals and wanted to share his passion for them (and as South Park pointed out, walk up to them and fuck around with them). I dunno, it makes me sad. I liked the world better with the Crocodile Hunter in it.

He had two children under age 8. His older daughter was about to get her own kids show on AnPlan.

I liked the world better with the Crocodile Hunter in it.

I concur.

Wow, how sad:( I always thought he was a fruit loop, but in a safe, funny way.

I remember seeing him inch his infant daughter close to a croc. They replayed that footage like they replayed MJ dangling blanket out the window.

And the cherry on the cake... A stingray stung his heart. Thats just weird.

I totally stuck up for him when that baby thing happened. Seriously, who knows more about the croc and whether or not the baby was in danger--Steve Irwin that's who.

Then again, maybe not.
I was looking forward to seeing him on TV as an old, old man still saying "Crikey" and talking about conservation.

yeah i didn't think it was like dangling your baby out a window.

seems like all the good conservation and animal experts pass on early.

Sadly, yeah. Well, Jacques Cousteau lived to be 81 or so. Of course, his youngest son died before he reached 30 in one of those flying boat thingys.

Oh, I was thinking of Dian Fossey and that Bear guy...can't think of his name. There was a documentary out on him...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Tim Treadwell.

Fossey is the one who was murdered by poachers, no?

[identity profile] kissdbyagnome.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh yes, duh it's in your journal title.

Yeah, I thought Gorillas in the Mist was a fine movie.

Man...I haven't seen that in years.

I wonder how long it will be until a Steve Irwin biopic.
Hopefully Terri will not give permission.

[identity profile] sleazeanna.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe it. I love Steve Irwin. A lot of people just rip on him...but I really was amazed by his love for nature and animals...I love to see people that really truly love what they do. He and Terri were so squeaky clean and happy! I guess most people will probably think, oh, he had it coming, that crazy bastard....

I just can't believe it. I mean, I do, but it sucks.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way. It's pissing me off to hear people say "Oh, he's no Jacques Cousteau" or "he had it coming"

Do people who get in car accidents have it coming because they knew cars were dangerous?

Besides, Jacques Cousteau got his youngest son killed and had a secret second family no one knew about until his first wife died. Irwin, OTOH, was a loving husband and father, and entertained me greatly. Plus yes, he totally beleived in what he did--which is more than a lot of people do with their lives.

That's so sad. I figured he was invincible. :(

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So did he, dammit!

[identity profile] vjsmom.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I, too, am saddened by the man's passing. My 7-year-old son was a huge fan, and I had to break the news to him. He was pretty sad, too.

And yeah, there are some pretty mean people out there. Death is not funny.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if someone is an evil despot or some kind of murderer, maybe a little shadenfraude is acceptable. But he's a conservationist beloved by children and adults alike. Being snide about his death has the same malice attached as the people who went around spoiling the last Harry Potter book because "h4rry pott3r fans are teh suck!!"

If there was a way to put empathy into the water supply, the world would be a better place.
