H and I just got home from The Descent. It was pretty scary and good. Not much in the way of plot; but that's okay because you don't really need anything scarier than the whole we're totally lost down here and OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!? to inspire some fear. The women had just enough personality that you could tell them apart, and pretty much tell how each one was going to fuck up and end up dead. I do like though, that with a Lion's Gate film you aren't even sure whether the main protagonist (or anyone, for that matter) will live. Lion's Gate films change it up often enough that it could go either way, which is cool.
I found this movie to be atmospheric and very tense. A bit too much of that loud, abrupt scare that turns out to be nothing IMHO. But plenty of genuine scares and some real gross-out moments. Some of the chicks you actually like, while others just make you wonder if people really say "shite" that often. The violence was quite brutal in parts, though I daresay it was a tad repetitive overall. A lot of biting and bashing, screaming and falling. And the creatures had a very familiar quality about them. That might be beacause they were actually humans who evolved to live underground, or they could be the product of a torrid liason between Lord Voldemort and Smeigol. And that chick, the main one, looked incredibly like a cross between Sissy Spacek and the chick from the original TCM.

Last night around 4am, I went on line for the express purpose of finding two screensavers: flying toasters and an aquarium. The flying toasters were easy enough. There's plenty of apple freeware screensavers out there, so why would I ever pay for one? But I looked, and looked, and looked for an aquarium screensaver for the mac. I could only find one. It was the most incredible, whip-ass, amazing, clever, cool screensaver I have ever heard of. Your screen actually fills up with water, and fish of your choosing swim around in it. There are all kinds of options for lighting and refraction and whether or not the fish can leave the screen. It's a really stupid thing to spend money on, but it's sooo cool that I'm mulling it over. Maybe I can get H to pay for half. He just got this rolling hilltop screensaver that he's totally into. Seriously though, you should look at it, because it's remarkably cool. Stupid Sexy Shareware.

I think many of us can agree that horror is serving up the love. They've finally realized that horror fans will spend their money if they give us some quality shit. With that in mind, I am stoked as hell for the proposed sequel to 28 Days Later. Since it's already on IMDB, that means that punks have already begun complaining about it. I really can't figure out; no matter how good a movie is people go on IMDB to bitch about it. A lot of it is "why does this movie even have to be made?" Who the hell has that kind of time, to go on IMDB and tell them what movies they shouldn't bother making??? It's truly baffling. They already hate the TCM remake prequel, and as disjointed as that may be, it looks creepy as shit. R Lee Ermy, you know.
And the whole "why ruin a classic" argument for almost all remakes and sequels is just asinine. How does a sequel or remake "ruin" the original. Yeah...Planet of the Apes totally sucks now because of the remake. By that logic, it would have already sucked because of the 4 sequels and TV show. Such is life, kids. The good stuff endures while the crap slowly settles to the bottom of the earth--and then the chicks from The Descent splash around in it while evading orcs.

Yep. There are a few really strong remakes out there. I think maybe these punks at IMDB just think they're too cool bashing everything. I guess nihlism is alive and well in the world of film.
