Wallace and Grommit and Wednes and Dharma:

My weekend was tremendous, enormous fun.

First, game night at K and N's which didn't actually involve any games. But it was held at night, so it's not a total misnomer. I finally got to see [profile] pak_man78, whom I see far too little of since his move to way-the-hell out-of-town.

Saturday was bonfire at the lovely near-home of Kassy and Dustin.
We had a grand old time. I discovered that 20 minutes is the limit on how long I can sit by a fire int he woods alone until I freak the fuck out.
Sunday we got together at my place at watch Great Muppet Caper which I own but watch not nearly as often as I should. There were also cider and donuts to be had. Mmmmm...

Today H and I are seeing a movie, probably History of Violence. I also have to put away all the laundry H did. H does all the laundry as part of our deal when we got an apartment that didn't have a washer/dryer. Then I'm making us a nice dinner, probably something chickeny and noodley with a side of zuchini. Then we'll probably try to watch something On Demand but will find that, as usual, they don't have anything good.

In depressing cartoon news, let's hope Gumby is not arrested behind this

Firstly, let me say how funny it is that when you google "Dharma" and nothing else, you get a ton of LOST stuff and nothing about that stupid Dharma and Greg show. Ha!!

My friend sent me a list of the I Ching correspondances of the numbers:

4 - Inexperience (Youthful Folly)

8 - Unity (Holding Together)

15 - Moderation (Modesty)

16 - Harmonize (Enthusiasm)

23 - Deterioration (Splitting Apart)

42 - Benefit (Increase)

I have decided, and someone should correct me if I'm wrong, that the super job Walt's mother (Michael's ex wife) took when she left Michael was probably at Dharma. It could be that's why Walt has that "Shinin' " and why The Others wanted him in the first place. Other real world to island connections will probably include: Hurley's friend from the asylum, the guy Sawyer killed, and Sayid's long-lost girlfriend.

I only just found out/realized that the people on the boat last season are the people from the Orientation film this season. That, of course, adds a whole new level to things. Myself, I was so blown away by having the polar bears explained that I didn't pay close attention to the rest. Plus, I'm not recording the eps because I plan to buy them later.

It also seem clear that the reason we've been almost utterly devoid of Lord of the Flies references is because the other half of the plane is the "bad side". I don't know about you, but I'm very glad Hurley doesn't wear glasses.

Me, I'm kinda hung up on the Orientation film, actually. They mention BF Skinner, and then NOTHING about the consequences of not pushing the button. They imply that it Would Be Bad, but they don't actually say why, just give instructions that it should be pressed.

Skinner was the Behaviorist dude who got rats to press bars for no readily apparent reason, and got pigeons to walk in circles.

A famous psychology experiment involved telling people they had to shock another human being, even if it became painful, just to see if the people would do it. Most of them did, even after it appeared the victim had lost consciousness or perhaps even died. (I don't think that was Skinner, but it was definitely a Behavior thing.)

And then there's Walden II...go look it up. It's Skinner's idea of Utopia. And it brings in shades of "Island" from Aldous Huxley. If you're bored, go spend a day researching all this and then watch LOST again. It may all be coinkydink, because I'm never certain Hollywood writers are that literate, but if it's coinkydink it's still pretty cool.

And me, I wouldn't push the damned button.

I too was thinking a lot about Skinner. I remember watching that experiement with the shocking in it on TV. One guy was laughing as he administered the shocks and felt no guilt afterwards because he had been told to do it. Also, the laughing guy was one of the most pissed when he learned the true nature of the experiment.

I hate to say it, but rats are such good candidates for psychological experimentation because they seem to respond just like humans do in a crisis situation. They are like a personification of the Id.

In rehab, we learned about the rats who push one button to get cocaine and one to get food. Once they discover the cocaine button, they just keep pushing it and pushing it until they die. They never touch the food button again. Sad.

It's really random if you search for Greg without Dharma.

I'm becoming convinced that nothing will happen if the button isn't pushed, simply because of that film and because of the situation. Why would anything happen? Why would the fate of the world rest on TWO men in a hole on an island? Personally, I think for some reason, probably not this season since they've got to drag it out, someone won't get to the button on time and nothing will happen. (Then, because Purgatory, Hurley will die having gotten over the curse of the numbers. So let's hope this doesn't happen.)

(Of course, if you go with the ever-irritating Purgatory, it fits perfectly that that was someone's punishment, and then they passed it on to Desmond and died. The only one around here that watches Lost is my dad, and since he's so obsessed with his little pet theory, I never hear anything else and I start thinking it myself. Forgive me.)

P.S. I totally missed the polar bear explanation... er... I must have zoned out for a minute. I was ridiculously tired last Wednesday. What was it? I feel like such a bad fan.

The purgatory thing is a tough call. I'm reserving judgement until the show tells me that one way or another.

During the U of M video, they say something about behavioral experiments on animals, and there is a shot of two polar bears.

“I only just found out/realized that the people on the boat last season are the people from the Orientation film this season. That, of course, adds a whole new level to things.”

Whoa. What????

I didn't notice it the first time through, someone told me. But there are screen caps.
