Whew!

I got up crazy early this morning so I could take the bus to my appointment with my fetching employment counselor. It went well, they are going to give me a voucher so i can get a new outfit for job interviews. What should I get? I guess some kind of pants and a nice blouse. I could get a nice skirt, but then I'd have to get nylons and shave my legs and crap. *shudder* What kind of shoes should I get? Are flats okay? What about loafers? I have no clue what the protocol is these days. I'm trying to get a job in high end customer service or reception. My plan is to pay on my loans for a year, get out of default and then off to grad school. That's if I'm not a famous writer by then...actually, even if I am.

My internet has been off all day, until about an hour ago. I thought I was unplugging it and plugging it back in like you're supposed to. It seems, though, that I confused the airport with the router, so I was doing it wrong. I can be remarkably stupid when it comes to computers, it seems. Stupid Ryan, not living here to constantly help me...

Anyway being offline I missed a few things. Everyone thinks it's okay to spam communities with Katrina/help posts. And of course I am called unsympathetic when I suggest that anyone who gives a damn would have already found that information by now. Plus watching the news is making me so upset and emotional that i just need to limit my exposure to it. I don't mean that people shouldn't write what they want in their own journal. Obviously, they should. But when I go looking for Sopranos, Law & Order, or Calvin and Hobbes news, I'm annoyed to see it spammed with some crap about some guy who will give a dollar per click. Are we really still fooled by junk mail that promises to give anyone money for clicking links?
Plus, it seems that [livejournal.com profile] rjwhite pokes the fun at those of us who prepare for zombie holocaust. Fie! Don't come asking to borrow my battery operated CB/am radio, shaky flashlights or various choppy devices when the time comes, Mr. Mock. That's all I'm saying...

Eek! I'm going into office stuff and I'm not sure. Um . . . I'd imagine that flats would be OK if heals are impractical. As long as you don't have exposed heals/toes and they match with your outfit I'd bet its OK? I'm shoe-helpless. That's why breaking up with ReneƩ isn't a good thing. She hasn't sent pics as they on a digi-cam and there is only one phone in her town (in W.V. - she works in an area with a 60% illiteracy rate) and no computers. She knows shoes.

I'm totally going to have to get with it because I'm going to be in an office environment.

Good luck getting a job placement tho! :)

I'm not so up on the protocol for interviews in the MidWest. And yeah, it's different depending on where you are and the local culture. It's my understanding that East Coasters get dressy to go to the mall. Here, you find people at the ballet in jeans and t-shirts. Which rings more true to you? ;-)

For the most part, though, nice flats are fine, as are dress slacks for women, regardless. Jeans, t-shirts, tie-up shoes like sneakers, tank tops (unless they're being used as a shell under a blouse), sweats, shorts, and sandals are generally no-nos.

Good luck!

Thanks, sweetie!

Gracias.

You know, I do notice people dressing up to go mall shopping in Ann Arbor. I've always assumed it's a showy display of wealth (as they define it). People don't go to church anymore and they have to show off somewhere...

I can see it now "Cajun Waterlogged Zombies attack!"

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-09-03 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
WTF?

RJ may not think the zombies are coming, but I believe you.
Hey, call me tomorrow afternoon and remind me to bring you those chairs and stuff.

No can do, I'll be out all day tomorrow.

I believe I will have some free time on Sunday though if that works for you.

Slacks and a nice blouse are what I've always worn. As for shoes, loafers are perfectly acceptable, flats, heels. Flip flops are RIGHT OUT. I don't care how fashionable they are :)

I tend to wear a nice pair of boots or mules to interviews. Both have heels, but I feel more comfortable in heels during interviews. As long as the shoes are clean and presentable, they should be fine. Just no flip flops :)

I steer clear of skirts because of my ankle tattoos. A lot of companies don't want visible tattoos, so I hide them with slacks. You have one on your arm, right? If so, then I would go for a long sleeved shirt as tattoos can be offputting to some people and that can cost you the job. It's silly, but that's how it is.

I can help you out with outfit picking or whatever, I've been on enough job interviews (and sat in on hiring others) to get an idea of what a lot of people are looking for.

Good luck!

Hey, thanks. Yeah, I make it a point to cover up my tattoos; usually with long sleeves, once with a wrist brace as it was damn hot out.

I haven't worn flip flops since my college graduation, silly.

's cool.

[identity profile] locakitty.livejournal.com 2005-09-03 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
i <3 flip flops. very muchly. more than any other shoe in the world. I just wish they were acceptable in the working world :)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-09-03 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ha. I only worse them for commencement because I wanted to mock the occasion. Plus I had just gotten them from the good people @ Camel Cash. I even had matching shades...which was good because I was damn high.

I'd say flats are definitely kosher, likewise slacks and a blouse or some such. Idunno if it's what you're looking for, but Borders Corporate has a bunch of administrative-type jobs open right about now: http://www.bordersgroupinc.com/careers/index.html. Good luck with the search, I know how much it sucks. :(

Hey, thanks. Borders would be an awesome place to work. Nice to see they are finally hiring again.
