Free as a...shark? Okay yes, a shark:

It seems that the good people at the Monterey Bay Acquarium have decided to release thier coveted Great White Shark back into the wild. Aside from it attacking and killing other sharks...you know, like an apex predator might...they decided that large animals are more dangerous than smaller ones. Hence, they are releasing the shark before it get's to Jaws-esque proportions. Good for them.

They claim that she is still in great shape and will be fine in the wild, despite being adorned with a rather silly looking radio collar that will spy on the sharks activities in the wild for the next month. Kind of like those ankle bracelets they put on parolees except the sharks' only crime is being interesting. I hope the shark is really healthy as captive white sharks tend to deteriotate quickly health wise if kept captive for any length of time. For those of you who don't know, sharks hate electricity (and no...I don't mean like in Jaws 2) so they are very bothered by pumps and filters and lights and all the other crap they use to make an acquarium pretty so people will come look at it. In fact, some ocean-side states have experemented with useing electric current rather than shark netting to increase effectiveness and kill less sharks. Because sharks can't swim backwards, they get caught in the nets and die at a rather alarming rate. However, the electric "netting" is more expensive and is rarely used.

I really do love sharks, I just think they're neat.
And that's why I despise Vic Hislop, even after all these years of despising him!

Feel free to join me in hating Vic Hislop.

I love sharks, too. Hmm, the radio collar probably has electricity in it, doesn't it? I hope that doesn't cause problems.

I hadn't heard of Vic Hislop before. Evil, evil, evil. MST3K gave their treatment to a short on hunting animals in Florida for zoos. It was hideous to watch this guy snaring bears and other critters out of trees and putting them in bags. The boys did a skit where they pretended to catch the hunter, put him in a bag, and then clown-hammered him to death. The same should be done to Vic Hislop, with real hammers.

I fully support that.

I should have guessed that. Cool!

That's really strange that sharks don't like electricity. Electricity usually attracts fish.

What they should be doing is capturing as many sharks as they can and taking genetic samples. That way when they are extinct we can use cloning to bring them back. Besides Sharks have amazing recuperative abilities. And they tan, but never get cancer. If we let them go extinct, then those genetic secrets may be lost to us.

I think sharks are beautifl, sleek creatures. I pet some baby ones atthe aquarium in San Fran, and they are nice creatures.

Of course, I'm a big fan of all animals.

Heh... anybody who feels Hislop is a hero is tantamount to someone who supported Herr Furer Hitler. Dispicable bastard.

Yup.

Appropos last comment having read the website: WHAT THE FUCK is up with people's obsession with mammals, as though they are some how superior to every other creature on earth... but Minke whales don't eat people... I can hear them calling.

So, a hundred years ago that whale would have been carved up for whalebone corsets and oil for lanterns. Those damn Aussies like Vic have their priorities WAY CONFUSED, and I'm one of those "Greenies" he rails about (In best Faux Southern Accent I can muster).

Herr Himler Vic.

Vic makes all kinds of spurious points to defend his killing...

like that there is just one of him and lots of sharks. It baffles me how he sees no harm in hunting animals at the top of thier food chain with no thought of conservation.

Sad...

so off topic it's funny!
