Open Water: one Wednes speaks.
Open Water is, to a lesser extent, akin to Blair Witch project. People seem to either love it or hate it, with very little middle ground. Also, almost everyone who sees it can't wait to tell you how they feel about it. That "hype" is how small films like this get noticed. Not much advirtising, but everyone who sees it has to tell everyone they know about it; especially horror fans and the lesser included "shark fans".
This film was damn good. Compelling and terrifying even as it presented itself as a film made for about $25. I always say that things like good dialogue and good performances are free. This film is a fine example of what you can do without digital effects, giant fake sharks, or that big pool over at Universal. In Open Water you'll see lots of interesting ocean critters, people in peril playing that Kevin Bacon game, clever lighting effects, innovative camera work, underwater vomit, and totally beleivable performances by the leads, and that pushy guy who "really needs a dive", oh yeah...and there's some sharks too. But don't think of this as a shark film; it's really more of a horror/drama peice about two people trapped in a horrible and terrifying circumstance. And Damn, is it ever scary. Plus, at a tidy 82 minutes, Open Water doesn't ever really drag.
For you fans fo the shark genre, here's a funny: Just when you are wondering whether or not you're going to have to watch both leads die, it is revealed to you that thier last names are "Watson" and "Kitner". Which are, of course, the last names of the first two people killed in Jaws. Very droll...plus you know for sure that they are doomed.
This is actually a pretty fun movie for Shark Fans. It is well researched and doesn't include sharks doing things they would never do like chasing people, swimming at top speed for long periods, or chomping on compressed air canisters like they were cigars. At the same time, it does include some things we dont' usually see in shark movies like bumping, investigatory biting, and being attracted to bloody or wounded things in the water.
Of course, this film is based on a true story, the outcome of which is that both people died and thier chewed up wet suits washed up onshore days later. So even assuming that they would both die, I really enjoyed watching this film. That lead chick is startlingly like Charlize Theron in appearance and voice. The lead dude gave a really intense performance but was kind of a dumbass for dropping the knife. We'll forgive him, since he paid "the ultimate price". So in short, brush up on your Shark Week and check out this film! I can't believe it took me so long to see this film. In truth no one wanted to see it with me, I guess I'm just a big lame.

Actually the being eaten alive thing gets to me as well. But I think I'm much more afraid of Zombies than sharks. Of course, I'm pretty well prepared with the knowlege to survive in either situation. Better safe than sorry I guess.
