Well, it IS that terrifying time of year...

The spider I just killed: The spider I just killed:

This picture is the exact same as the spiders we've been finding in our apartment at the rate of about 3 a week. I think there is cause for some alarm here...[profile] uterdic?

In other news, Oxygen came on cable tonight, so I checked it out. I can't quite describe what went wrong with this movie, as it is a good story told with some fabulous performances. Then there are some parts of it that just suck. But this is a great film for Adrien Brody fans if any...I like him in this film a lot. Happily, [profile] lickingtoad and [profile] pak_man78 were onhand to join in the watching of TV and the eating of pizza...and the other kind of pizza too. So in short, all was right with the world.

It turns out that The Village is actually NOT paying $6 an hour across the board. For whatever reason people decided to keep that information from me, knowing full well I would never go work there for such low pay. I guess that's why I get for taking someone's word for it instead of going there myself. Of course, I did fill out an application and they never called me, presumably because I asked for a reasonable wage and/or a management position. I'm just not clear on why people are such selfish bastards when they know how shitty it feels to be out of work. Oh well...I guess I should know better than to rely on other people by this stage in the game. It's just that on top of hurting my feelings, it makes me damn mad.

Am I insane or did the opening credits on SNL tonight include Wil Ferrell?
It was very wierd, not that I watched for long, it's not so funny these days.

*UNH!* Scary spider picture!!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and the website says they are rare here, but I've seen a bunch of them.

Glad Ron Weasley hasn't been by here!

That's not a spider ...

;)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
That makes me want a Foster's.

Fosters. Beer that isn't sold in Australia.

I can't for the life of me imagine why you would want one.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't?

I feel so...disallusioned.

Export only. You've been had!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man...I haven't felt this bad since finding out those two geezers weren't really Bartles and James!

Any other myths about Australia you want me to forever destroy for you?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Um...do dingo's take out a lot of babies there, or is that just in the movies?

Kidding!!!

[personal profile] itches 2004-10-03 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, that one is true. Yep, totally true.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I might be remembering this wrong, but I think the guys pretending to be Bartles and James were Earnest and Julio Gallo, who make B&J. When I learned that, I felt I wasn't being as ripped off as I should be. But then again, I might be way off base. If only there were some thing that I could look up all this information with...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's true. I think they were actors.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So I looked it up (this time), and you are correct, they are actors. When I heard it, I suppose I wanted to believe it because I was disappointed too.

You do know that for months slugs would magically materialise in my hallway?

So is the spider venomous?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is a brown recluse. They can (but usually don't) kill people. If you get bitten, you're supposed to go right to the hospital.

[identity profile] anathon.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Where have you been finding all these? Don't they normally keep to themselves and hide?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought so, but they have been running around my apartment like crazy. I keep hoping I am mis-identifying it.

[identity profile] anathon.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I did a google image search and that spider did kind of look like a brown recluse. But it is crazy that there are so many running around.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My greater concern, of course, it that I have cats!

[identity profile] emperorsamir.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that often i get to watch SNL, or cable, but i was not impressed with the second half of last night's show...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I turned it off after the Debbie Downer sketch...which was twice as long as it should have been.

[identity profile] emperorsamir.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
well after that you didn't miss anything at all.

[identity profile] clockworkmonkey.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
I noticed that too. When Announcing Will Forte, Dan Pado sort of half said "Forte" and half said "Ferrell" so it came out Will Fortell.

[identity profile] clockworkmonkey.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
And I have to point out that that was a typo. I know it's "Don Pardo." Though maybe it was his brother Dan on last night, that would explain it.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Amateur! ;-)

[identity profile] a-lad-inane.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you re: SNL; I haven't been able to stomach that show in ten years, which is a pity seeing as it was once my favorite.

I just can't believe it takes between 20 and 30 professional comedy writers to come up with nine or ten sketches per week, only one or two of which are the least bit funny or innovative. I'd like to see the sketches they throw out. :D

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! No, I bet you wouldn't.

I think the Sandler, Spade, Farley years were the last turly good ones. One Wil Ferrell never quite managed to save the rest.

[identity profile] absinthofheart.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Brown recluse spiders are not that uncommon. I have rarely seen them, but they seem to like to share space with G and S. G is terrified of them (as I am of ALL bugs), but in every single place he's lived there have been brown recluse spiders. In my parents home, we used to see mainly wolf spiders (which are big and ugly and furry), and occasionally brown recluses. It was not a safe household for me at all.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, they aren't that uncommon, but after looking around a few image sites, I'm pretty confident that they aren't the Brown Recluse. The ones we have in our place are pretty small, and all these images with scale in them show it as much larger. I've also seen them at a handful of places I lived in NC and these don't look like them. They're close, and I wouldn't say that I'm 100% positive, but these are pretty small compared to this:

Let me try this again.

Some info for you guys:

In the mature brown recluse spider as well as some other species of recluse spiders, the dark violin marking is well defined, with the neck of the violin pointing toward the bulbous abdomen. The abdomen is uniformly colored, although the coloration can range from light tan to dark brown, and is covered with numerous fine hairs that provide a velvety appearance. The long, thin, brown legs also are covered with fine hairs, but not spines. Adult brown recluse spiders have a leg span about the size of a quarter. Their body is about 3/8 inches long and about 3/16 inches wide. Males are slightly smaller in body length than females, but males have proportionally longer legs. Both sexes are venomous. The immature stages closely resemble the adults except for size and a slightly lighter color. Whereas most spiders have eight eyes, recluse spiders have six eyes that are arranged in pairs in a semicircle on the forepart of the cephalothorax (see close-up view). A 10X hand lens or microscope is needed to see this diagnostic feature. In order to determine the exact species of Loxosceles, the spider's genitalia need to be examined under a high-power microscope. This requires the skills of a spider expert.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Wednes and I talked about the violin (when I was learning about them in NC it was a "fiddle"), and as I have killed a couple of these in our apt., I looked (because I had thought of the recluse as a possibility, but didn't want to scare Wednes), and didn't see this marking.

again, I'm not convinced that they aren't the recluse, but I'm being optimistic (for a change).

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah well, if my cat gets bitten in the midddle of the night, I'm waking your ass up.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? I'm not a doctor. I only play one on TV.

Ohhh wait, I have a car. We'll have a look next time we see one.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean to keep any information from you. I'd been working from 5am to 11pm straight for several days and was not the most alert. I don't like making anyone mad. I was glad to see you today, and I'm glad you didn't seem mad at me when I saw you. You are the best, y'know.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-04 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was just feeling really depressed and pissed off. I know you're not a bastard, dude...seriously.

[identity profile] skippykawakami.livejournal.com 2004-10-18 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt the same way about Oxygen. I kept wanting to like it, but it kept not getting there. There was something too cartooney about it. Maura Tierney is one of my favorite actresses, and she did her "strength through fragility" thing well here, but it just didn't have the meat it should have had.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-18 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, good performances but it didn't quite mesh.
