Well, Fuck Me Right in the EAR!

You know how for several days I've been saying how depressed I've been, and sick and such. How things just aren't going my way?

Well, you can mulitply that by about a zillion.
As of 3pm today, Madstone Ann Arbor is no more.

They shut us down, and we have no jobs.

I can't even put into words how upset I am, how betrayed I feel, and how very fucked my life is without a job in the middle of Ann Arbor, in the middle of summer. I mean, we moved into a more expensive apartment so we could be closer to work.

Plus my favorite manager just bought a house and had a kid. I feel even worse for him than i do for me.

Anyway, if you need me, I'll be panicking, pavement pounding, or crying into my dinner.

And if any of you Madstoners are finding out about this here instead of from someone else, sorry you had to find out this way. And I'm still having people over Saturday night to welcome Kassy home. I'm sure she'll need a drink.

jee-zus!

What a shocker! Criminey! What's a Wednesday to do??

Of course I'm peeved on a personal level, too, having not gotten a chance to use my free passes. (Bet my gifting friend is gonna be damned annoyed, too.) But mainly, what a blow to ya'll Madstoners.

[identity profile] emperorsamir.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
that's really sad. im sorry you lost your job.

I found out as I got up to use the bathroom in the middle of Troy, which I didn't finish, since I was helping take everything down.

This really blows. :(

Hey, girl---they're quoting & linking to you over on the schnazzy new Arbor Update.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance in mood-boosting. And I'll redouble my earlier offer for distraction from depression. My heart goes out to ya.

[identity profile] mariemontclair.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really sorry :~(. I almost can't believe they did that to you guys down there and elsewhere. We're over here holding our breaths...it's got to come sometime.

[identity profile] crankyasanoldma.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Came here from Arbor update--I'm really shocked. I thought they were doing such interesting innovative things that I figured they had steady patronage and were doing fine.

I didn't go often, but did see some great films there and always found it notable how friendly and helpful the employees were. I knew many parents who were faithful about attending the BYO Baby shows. Which were mentioned in the NYT, for heaven's sake.

I'm really sorry about this--how awful for you and your coworkers.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for your comments. We did have pretty good numbers, but our NY office had totally unrealistic expectations of us. They banked on us totally outdoing the Michigan theatre even though they've been around 50+ years longer than us and had better bookings.

I noticed in todays A2 news our NY spokesperson insulted our work. Funny thing is, none of us have ever even met that person, so how on earth would she know?

Outdoing the Michigan?

(Anonymous) 2004-06-03 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus, what fucking idiots. Don't they do market research or something? (That said, I liked going to the Madstone and the employees were always great (and it was there that I first heard Badly Drawn Boy, who I'm now a fan of); sorry to hear about all this.)

Re: Outdoing the Michigan?

Thanks!

Well, if you hear of any great receptionist/ customer service gigs, do let us know!

[identity profile] flinx.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Son of a demoness bitch. And all her daughters, too.

That blows. I am terribly sorry to hear that they cut you off cold, without a warning, without anything. Goddam.

You have my sympathies, tremendously so. I shall cross as many fingers and toes as I can get a hold of for you.

(maybe we'll just have to make bread together when the starters come through... ;-)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Right on! thanks, man.

[identity profile] abbagirl.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, I'm sorry to hear it... :( Do you know why they shut it down? I am shocked too...sigh. I'm still looking for a job too, so I know how ya feel..let me know if you find any cool leads! :)

Geez, that sucks. I know how you feel, too.

[identity profile] squamous.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude - !

Sorry to hear this - good luck to you finding something else that you like to do.

That really sucks.

Every time I've heard of something like this, it seems like it does work out for the best eventually - cliched as that is - but in the meantime the disruption can be really shitty. Especially if you were close to some of your coworkers. Anyway, sorry man.

[identity profile] absinthofheart.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF!?!?! That's it?!? They're closed? I can't believe that they would just toss all of you loyal employees out on your ears without any warning, but yet they have!! Holy fucking shit! That is the most fucked up thing ever! If there is anything you need, that we can provide, just call, ok? I am so sorry. Are you going to contact the company and bitch them out? Is there anyone TO bitchout? Man! Oh, and Tom sends his best wishes too.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks to all of you's.

I am damn upset, but I don't think I'd feel better after taking the time to tell the company how stupid they were, and how badly they treated us. If they cared in the first place, they wouldn't treated us better...communicated more and all that.
They didn't.

God, that's horrible.

[identity profile] lirrin.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy Tempestas Day. Roight.

I'm sorry this happened. I'll cross my fingers for you that you get something even better and very soon. Yikes.

[identity profile] katie-can-draw.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my! that's shocking! terrible!
i hope you find yourself a kick-ass job right away... i've got my fingers crossed for you.

[identity profile] ex-jenniepan481.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That is crazy! I have never heard of such a thing...and no warning! Bastards!!!

I will keep you in my thoughts..btw would some more lemon curd make you happy??

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-06-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I daresay it could.

*grinning broadly*

[identity profile] ex-jenniepan481.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
well then I guess I will just have to mosey on down to the post office with some loot!

[identity profile] ex-jenniepan481.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
it is the least I can do!

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
If you have never heard of such a thing then you must live a sheltered life. This is typical behavior for most companies.

[identity profile] ex-jenniepan481.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
well yes I do sorta live under a rock..be it a big military rock.

Sweet government job security.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I guess the Navy is OK. You wouldn't happen to be in Florida or Iceland would you?

[identity profile] ex-jenniepan481.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
actually I WANT to go to keflavik, but they are closing that base..and we are looking for orders too Jacksonville...currently we are in washington state.

[identity profile] locakitty.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well poopinstock. Good luck with finding a new job. That sucks how they did it. Sheesh, they could have least given you a heads up or something. Is there any severance package, or are you all just screwed? Do you at least get to steal stuff?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
We're screwed, though I plan to snag some posters Friday when I go get my cheque.

It's very irritating becuase it's clear that they had June 1st in mind as a shut down date and told no one.

[identity profile] savidge.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, that bites.
I hope you find something soon.
If you lived in CA, my sister in law might be able to get
you work in movies.

[identity profile] lostsatellite.livejournal.com 2004-06-03 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I just came across this entry today...I'm really sorry that Madstone was shut down...I wish there were a way to reverse it all...

*hugs*

Sorry about

(Anonymous) 2004-06-04 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to learn of your theatre's untimely demise. Maybe someone else will jump in and reopen it.

I've never been to your theatre but I recall sending you a print early this year. I own the screening room in Chicago and we had screened a film called "What Alice Found" a couple times for press in anticipation of it opening at Landmark here. But Landmark delayed the opening. The distributor asked me to hold onto it, which I did. But ultimately Landmark opted not to play it and I received word to send it on to Madstone Ann Arbor. It's funny how one remembers little things like that. Excellent little super low budget shot-on-consumer-grade-video movie, btw. Hope you got a chance to see it.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-06-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sory to say I did not get a chance to see that film. We were really short staffed a the time we had it, and I didn't have time.

It is very sad about the theatre. We had an excellent staff in Ann Arbor, while Madstone corporate screwed all of us with thier ignorance and short sightedness. They are shutting down completely at the end of the month.

more theaters closed

(Anonymous) 2004-06-07 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Madstone closed its remaining theaters this week. All I know is that Ann Arbor and Chandler, AZ chains were not making enough money and the Atlanta location was leased out in front of the companies nose to someone else. Denver, CO location closed on 6/6. San Diego and Tampa locations may be sold to another company.

Re: more theaters closed

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-06-07 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, Ann Arbor was the #3 Madstone theatre, after Atlanta and Chandler. They closed us down first because we were expensive to run and no one wanted to buy us.

Last I heard, there was great pressure to sell San Deigo or get stuck with the lease. they managed to weasel out of thier lease here in A2.
