Verbosity?

How do you pronounce these words:

C O U P O N : Koo-pon or Kyew-pon?

C U M I N : Kyew-min or Koo-min?

B A S I L : Bazz-zil or Baze-zill or Bah-zill?

I won't even get into the whole caramel/carmel thing. The last time I tried to have that discussion, I swear a fight almost broke out.

I'm highly stoked to see The Passions of the Christ, especially now that I hear The Ponitff has some kind of problem with it. Anyone know what all the fuss is about?

I remember going to see Last Temptation of Christ at the movies when I was still a smart alecky kid. There were reporters and protesters there, whom I just had to talk to. I remember that the protesters had not seen the film, and that the reporters had to keep a certain distance fromt he doors of the theatres, and there were cops there making sure they did. As a kid, I found that way far fascinating!

Of course the film itself is going to be fabulous and brutal. I'm surprised that the Christians are so excited when its' going to be so violent. I am kinda bummed that they put subtitles in. What kind of person needs the last 12 hours of Jesus' life narrated for them when they are seeing it on the screen?!? Anyway, I can't wait!

"I won't even get into the whole caramel/carmel thing. The last time I tried to have that discussion, I swear a fight almost broke out."
WTF? Car-a-mel. It has three syllables. No argument.
But then again, Americans have removed whole syllables from all sorts of words: that light metal? 'Al-you-min-ee-um', not 'All-oo-min-um', and don't get me started on 'noo-clear' for 'nuke-lea-ar' ...

here's a weird quirk on that one: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/s1048468.htm

Interesting.

It seems like lots of things owuld make people dislike Jews more than this film...I mean if they were looking for a reason. What about Woody Allen? Gilbert Gottfried? Robert Klien...that guy is soooo irritating.

Yeah, I agree.

I have always hated "kinniegarden" instead of kindergarten.

[identity profile] boblovesdot.livejournal.com 2004-02-19 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
heh.. it's funny how much gets crap get thrown over movie made from the heart. Look at Dogma. Kevin Smith made a movie that was personal to his faith and, true to form, poked fun at it. People lambasted him. He is actually a "good Catholic" and is even raising his family that way. Just goes to show that many religious people need to pull the stick out of their asses and learn to not take everything seriously.

There is a quote that I can can't remember who said it, "A faith that does not question is a dead faith."

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-02-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I think Holy Grail by Monty Python is another great example of a truthful, witty film that people got way far upset over. people need to relax.

i wont even begin to express my distaste for the way witches are portrayed in film and TV...

for me it is

Q-pon, Q-min, and Bay-sil....no one ever accused me of being normal..but at least I say noo cle ar instead of noo cul er for nuclear.

I read a whole bunch about the movie, and I think subtitles are kinda cool, but I took a year of Latin and would like to see if I remember any of it. Apparently Pontius Pilate is portrayed as sypythatic to Jesus's plight..riiiight I have a hard time with that one.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-02-20 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
My take on Pilate is that he was a politician, which means he probably had very few ideas of his own, and bowed always to the will of the voters. Of course, David Bowie didn't really play him that was in LToC...so we shall see...

I cant remember the time period but is this when rome had a senate or when there was just emporers of rome. Cause if he were emporer I would think he would have had more power and say. Of course he still had to deal with uprisings and things and I am sure it would be quite a threat to the empire to hear of a man that was "king of the Jews" and gave a bit of power over the Jewish folks who at the time had no status.

well my mom calls cumin "cumino" (coo-me-no) so thats how im used to it being pronounced. and ive only ever heard really old hicks call coupons "cyou-pons"

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-02-20 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think "coupon" pronunciation may be related to location. Like "soda" vs "coke" vs "pop".

Since I am not catholic I really do not understand much of the fuss over the movie.

I was raised Catholic for a few years, and I don't get it either.

Maybe it will all make sense tomorrow after I see it.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-02-20 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't I tell ya on the subtitles. Later on when I thought about it I felt bad about blurting out about the lack of success of the theater. And it seems to me if the movie has a kick ass score, and sound effects then the subtitles would just get in the way. I was even looking forward to seeing it.

Well, that's what i would say. But if you can beleive this, some people don't just naturally defer to my judgement.
