I went to Medeski Martin and Wood!

Man, it kicked ass! And it was free...FREE I tella ya, FREEEEEE!!! So I guess all that grunt work I did for the promotions chick at work really did pay off. I also scored some Cheap Trick tix for my buddy to take his wife.

The show was amazing, and hippies from all over town showed up to dance crazily and infuriate security by smoking pot inside the balcony of the Michigan Theatre. Can you beleive that?

Medeski had like, 5 different keyboards, two of which were double ones. And man, I don't think I've ever seen more percussives. They played for over 3 hours, just the 3 of them and a sound guy. it was bloody amazing!!!

I saw them when they toured for "Combustication". It was really groovy, though you could tell which part of the crowd was there for the Phish-esque songs and which were the ones there for the jazz. When it got all dischordant (as jazz often does) the reedy willow dancing people didn't know quite what to do, so they made up a beat all their own.

I later saw them with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones at an outdoor venue in the woods of suburban Virginia. They were without the DJ and they ended up playing a lot of songs with Béla and the rest of the band. That was way cool

it is kind of wierd to see how the crowd is so polarized. Like 3/4ths crazy hippies and 1/4 uptight Ann Arbor types.

it was sweet as hell though. The crowd was very cool about informing you when it was time to get up and dance.
