TV and Computers and Writing. Oh My!
Previously on LOST...
Jack frantically searches for the Final Horcrux, while Miles tries in vain to determine who the last cylon is. Hurley and Dr Melfi stare at a picture of Bob Denver for two hours, then go out for Onion Rings. Clare and Charlie jump a great white shark on some waterskis while holding a baby between them at Joanie anc Chachi's wedding. Suddenly, Desmond calls someone brotha as he gives Ben Linus the ol' one two punch--that ends up being more of a 4-8-15-16-23-42 right in the kisser! Sawyer and Eko wake up in bed next to each other, and notice that Juliet has actually been in the shower all this time, and she used the last of the Dharma shampoo:
Let me just preface by saying I've only seen the season 6 episodes once each. I did that on purpose. I imagine since we're cutting the cable, I'll be rewatching them all in a row sometime soon. Maybe not. I really need to get some writing done. Onward.
I heard a theory: That the whole show happened in Jack's blacked out mind. That's why it starts with his eye opening and ending with it closing. Response to that theory: Shut up, that's dumb. Plus it would be the other way around.
--Jack. You're right, Internets, he was the obvious choice. I predicted that Hurley was next. I win.
Speaking of Jack, he and Locke throwing down in fisticuffs? Another WIN (for the show, not me).
--Rose and Bernard just fine in the jungle, doing their best not to get involved. Called it!
--Ben Linus and Chalres Widmore. I only half-called that one. I basically expected a smaller, more intellectually refined version of Jack vs Lock, with Linus and Widmore ultimately killing each other.
--Purgatory (if non-denominational). We pretty much all called it. We win! Yeah, they told us it wasn't that, and they were hedging. Damn you, Gary Troup! *shakes fist* Wait a minute?!? Stupid anagrams...
--Sawyer loves Juliet, not Kate. Sawyer being Sawyer, he appreciates someone who is actually good. Not someone hot, vain, and difficult that can rationalize all manner of terrible behavior. Called it!
--Jack loves Kate and vice versa. Feh. Don't care. Don't care.
--Nikki and Paolo being the center of everything. Oh wait, that didn't happen. *snerk*
Here's what I did NOT predict:
--Kate living. Dang. Well, I guess they all died eventually.
--Ben Linus having a reasonably happy ending. Glad to know it, though. I maintain that Ben Linus is not a bad man. He's an above-average person who was kicked around and used by every person he's ever met. I love how his friendship with Hurley developed. As Ben (and Sawyer before him) have taught us, eventually--Everybody Loves Hugo. *narf*
--Lapidus being alive. Nice.
--Sayid and Shannon. Holy Crap! Seriously, who could have possibly seriously seen that coming? No es possible. Well played, Sirs. And because they redeemed Shannon in her final episode, Yay!!
--Michael, Walt, Eko, and Richard (and possibly Ben, I can't remember) not ending up in that room at the end. Not that I knew it was coming or anything, but I'll need to watch again to figure out who all is in that group. I also enjoyed that not everyone was part of a couple. Then again, Locke and Boone might very well count as a couple. ;-]
Answered or Explained to My Satisfaction:
--What's that rumbling and whispering in the jungle?
--Who are The Others and what's their deal?
--Who is Widmore and what's his problem?
--The Dharma initiative.
--The Hatch
--Why The Others were stealing children.
--Ben Linus and his whole deal.
--Smoke Monster.
--Four-Toed Statue
--The Light of the World
--Who is Jacob, what's his deal?
--Who will replace Jacob, how's all that gonna work?
--The Numbers.
What they seemed to have decided is to give us an explanation that lends itself to many, many manifestations. Like the old Simpsons joke Whenever you see something like that, a Wizard did it! I've enjoyed the ride so much, I'm gonna let that go.
Overall, I found the thematic message of LOST to be even better than the content itself. I'm not given to bouts of being comforted by things, but damn. It was such a friendly, empowering, positive, and proactive message. Ultimately, we have a great deal more control over our own destinies than we realize. Giving a pseudo-intellectual snob like myself a big-ass mystery to chase down and figure out, only to reveal a non-denominational truth about not sweating the small stuff and focusing on what's really important? Yes. Using my enormous intellectual vanity as a tool for self awareness through appreciation of metaphor? Yes, please! Stocking it with hot, damaged men and various types of women I can find things to like about (and Kate)? Okie dokie. I'm not going to go into uber detail, since for me, there's nothing left to figure out. I'm gonna be honest, I felt very shafted by Battlestar Galactica, and annoyed by how so many people misunderstand The Sopranos finale. I was fully prepared to be pissed at the ending of LOST either because of what happened or what was left out. I wasn't. I felt very happy on many levels. And while I would have appreciated the polar bear I'd been asking for since season two, I was totally good with everything that happened, and didn't happen. As it happened they eventually learned to live together, mainly so as not to die alone.

Maybe it's the new meds, but I'm really comfortable with suspending my disbelief these days. I gotta snap out of it for the new book. You know what they say: The difference between fiction and real-life is that fiction has to make sense.
In kickass news, I was thinking about buying one of those Dharma decals you put on your macbook that have space for the Apple logo in the middle. Neat. But when I looked around for one online, I decided that this was way more amazing, and ordered it from a chick on Etsy:

I'm going to order this to go underneath it:

And there will be much rejoicing.
Stay tunes, kids. tonight I'll be posting chapters 3 and 4 of Kiss Me Like You Love Me: The Audiobook Podcast over at my website. You really should try to catch it. 'Tis a scary, scary thing.

Yeah, this chick at etsy has many awesome and clever designs. I think she may even do custom stuff.
