I hate to say it...

But I really think that lately I've been enjoying watching Seth McFarland's shows better than The Simpsons. I know, blasphemy right? I'm not saying that Family Guy is a better show, just that I'm enjoying watching it more. I think overall Simps has been a spectacular show, one of the best in the history of television, and certainly the best animated show. But in terms of just sitting down and watching, I always laugh harder at Family Guy (and even American Dad sometimes) than I do at Simpsons. Plus, I find that the social and political commentary in the McFarlane shows is dead-on in a lot of places. I find myself laughing, nodding and saying "pretty much" a lot while I watch.

So...Wolverine. It got leaked, right? Well, then why isn't everybody talking about how good it is? Doesn't that logically follow that if people have seen it, they should be raving? They aren't. This leads me toward great worry. I don't want it to be bad. Liev Schrieber is awesome.

Let's not forget that today is the birthday of [livejournal.com profile] hellamama. Be nice to her, she's someone's Mom. Actually, she's sort to TWO someone's mom. Here's hoping her birthday is delightful!!

As for me, I'm opening four days in a row this week. I don't care for openings, and I don't care for working four days in a row. I do realize that many people do this, but those people are not me. I'm on a LOT of medication, and I needs my sleep. I also need days off to write. I only wrote a chapter and a half all weekend. Anyway, I want sleep and won't be able to get any real sleep until Friday. Frown.

Not sure I'll be able to get the weekend off for the birthday of [livejournal.com profile] absinthofheart. I was supposed to ask for it off like, a month ago and flaked on the date. So now I probably won't get to go away that weekend. 'Course, I really should be using that time to write anyway. Speaking of writing, I'm supposed to put the employee newsletter out in 3 days and I have almost no news for it. Fie!

I haven't really watched the Simpsons in years. I don't think I've even tried to watch it every Sunday, or even money Sundays, in about five years. I started missing it just due to being busy with other things. Inevitably, I'd try to come back to it and just not be that thrilled with new episodes. These days I don't even bother and just tell myself I'll get all caught up with the last several years on dvd at some point. My feeling about the Simpsons when I bother to watch it is that it's merely Ok.

I love Family Guy. I mean, I went pretty gaga for it in the second 3rd season only to see it get cancelled. Then it returned to rock my world. Anyone who says it isn't as good now or wasn't as good after it returned to television is so far beyond delusional that comprehension of their point of view totally escapes me. I'm on my second run thru the Volume Four dvd set, and many episodes from that season totally kill.

It seems like some of the things people complain about most about the show are things that I like, or don't leave me with any negative feeling. "The jokes are too random, the cutaway scenes have nothing to do with the story, there's too many pop culture reference-y things and most of them are too obscure..."

To the latter point, I hate when people have that "oh, they're so smug, making these references no one would get and thinking they're so damn clever" attitude. It reeks of insecurity. I feel like those people get upset that jokes are made that they don't get and they feel left out. Like the writers go out of their way to alienate viewers with some of the more left-field jokes.

I love the random cutaway gags. That is really what makes the show, and what hooked me and, I would think, most other people into it. A friend of mine mine just recently said something like "if you took out all the cutaway gags, I think you'd only have like 7 minutes of story!" Man, so the crap what? Family Guy has never been that strong of a story-oriented show, I think this was obvious as early as the second and third season. To complain about that now after watching it all this time seems a little silly. Obviously, an episode of Family Guy has a plot. But it's not and has never been a show meant to have strong stories that you become really invested in. In that sense, it's not the Simpsons, and has never tried to be, or compete with the Simpsons or any other show by being strong on stories. That's never been the reason why I watched it anyway. I mean, enjoy it for what it is or don't. People who really don't like Family Guy seem to get so indignant why it's not funny and is just a terrible show.

I could really continue on here but at this point I, um, need to leave for work.. ;P

It's funny, because when I watch Family Guy I do find myself wondering how people 10 years younger than me (or so) even appreciate the show since some of it is very obscure and dated. Myself, I find it hilarious because I am obviously part of the target audience.
I think you're right about people who don't get it. I'm sure they do feel left out, because as crude as it is, it's also very smart.

So yeah, I'm totally with you on this.

Thanks for the B-day wish! I ate much chocolate yesterday, but never got my nap. Pretty good day overall, but a nap would have made it great!
