Why do all the men I love lie and do murder?!?

I always stood up for you, Ben Linus.
Don't you make a fool of me.
I'm reserving judgment for now...but I'm very disturbed and disappointed.

In other news, Safari 4 Beta is pretty neat.

I'm also finally working on my "people being eaten" story.
Details may follow, or I may keep it to myself. ;-]

I don't think there is any going back from this one. Its not that he needed to get John to do the noble thing, since he was already doing it. Ben just wanted the info because of his jealousy. He knows Locke is the one destined to lead the others, and he doesn't want to give that up.

I'm not saying Ben isn't petty. His behavior with Juliet demonstrated that clearly. But I think he also knows John would live again once he reached the island.

Yes, but he manipulated and then murdered John just so he could get some info before he was dead

Is it still murder if you know they're coming back?

But he jumped him from behind! AFTER he deceived him.

I agree, it certainly looks bad for him.
I'm sure that he is very jealous of John. I just think there's more to know. It's too easy to set him up as being so terrible and then have him turn out to be terrible. It's like Snape, it has to be different than what you've thought all along.
