Life on Mars wasn't on last night in favor of some Barbara Walters nonsense. Frown.

I think I've figured out the compatibility problems I am having with MSWord. I have been unable to Email myself my current novel at work because it all ends up as squares and symbols. But with some creative "save-as" maneuvering, I think I've got it figured out. I'll see when I go in to work to close tonight.

This weekend I have to record that silly True Blood show on HBO On Demand. I can't believe I'm going to sit through twelve hours of silly vampire nonsense just because people don't have HBO. I'd just buy it, if HBO didn't charge twice as much for their half-size seasons as other shows charge for real seasons. Bummer, because it will drastically cut into my Xbox zombie hunting time. Anyway, it's not a bad show, but I'm mortified at the way black characters are portrayed on it. And it's different, I am told, than in the books.

Speaking of HBO, they are playing Circle of Friends this month. I think I'll record it on DVD.

I still say True Blood with all its changes is better than Twilight without. I freely admit, however, that I am a stickler for source material. I'm still sore over the face that the Elves fought at Helms Deep (Texually referred to as the "Battle of the Hornburg") in Jacksons version of The Two Towers. It makes Legolas being there significantly less interesting and it fails to reinforce the fact that MEN not elves were coming to power in Middle Earth. God, I sound like a nerd. :)

Indeed. And it's my nerdiness for all things horror that makes me have such trouble with True Blood. Not being part of the Twilight phenom, I do accept that True Blood is a better show--it's for grown-ups. I just hate the wise talking black chick and the outspoken gay guy as the ONLY black characters on the whole show. For me, it equates to lazy writing and not at all what I would expect from HBO, who I think it TV's quality standard. I tend to compare all other dramas to what I'm seeing on HBO.

Who knows, maybe as I watch the season I'll get to like it and be glad to have a copy. I've only seen the first three eps or so.

Well, and again I'm embarrased to speak in its defense, I think they did many interesting things with the characters that I didn't expect. They represent VERY VERY stereotypical characters early and develop away from that as the episodes progress. Not that its some genius writing or anything but it reminds me of the very first few minutes of the very first episode of Battlestar where Six is making out with Boxey's dad. I thought "oh god, the show is just about sex!" and look where they went with that?! ;)

Okay, that makes sense.
I'll let you know what I think when I've watched the whole season. There are things I like about it, even aside from Bill's overall hotness. Why are all vampires so hot? Is that like, a secret vampire power you get? Hotness?

Last week's "Life On Mars" was the last one for a while on ABC.
It will be returning on January 28th.

It may be available online. Do catch it. It was very good.

I'm enjoying the US version. It's different from the BBC's version, but still quite good.

I'm still sore about that, too. And so much else having to do with Jackson's LoTR. Dwarf-tossing jokes, anyone? Gah!

Yeah, it's got a great cast. I'm bummed I missed the last ep, but with my swank new computer, I can catch it online.

Gimli the "Comic Relief Dwarf" makes me MOST sad because its the thing that brings me out of the movies more than anything else. I tolerate it because of how awesome many of the other things are but I agree 100000%. Dwarves are much cooler in my book (and much less prone to tossing). I also wish the relationship between Gimli and Legolas had received a bit more attention. But I suspect you and I could go on all afternoon about such things. :)

Maybe it was with wednes, but I discussed this very topic -- Peter Jackson is famous, rightly so, for making the best *possible* LoTR. I don't think they'll ever do a book-to-film translation. I cite as my example 'Dune,' where the Sci-Fi miniseries was probably much more likely to make Frank Herbert *not* spin in his grave. Maybe just ... y'know. Stretch his arms a little.

(As an aside, I would *totally* be down with Sci-Fi minseries adaptations of LoTR, they did Dune, so all that's left for me is the original 'Chronicles of Amber.')

I imagine we could. I get a lot of pleasure out of tearing the Jackson films down. Even though they did a lot right. : )

Jackson did a pretty good job. Some things he did just about perfectly. But so many things got handled so badly. If they're really going to do LoTR right, it needs to be six movies, not three. And they need to get rid of all the stupid add-in Hollywood plot lines. Any Tolkien plot line beats any Hollywood plot line (for example, Gollum and the stupid lembas crumbs--damn, that pissed me off!) every time.

What version of Word do you have at work? because I know there is a "Compatibility" pack you can install for office now that will resolve the 2007 to 2003 issues.

I think it's 2003 at work.
No matter though, I've got it figured out.
