Obama's running mate...

Alright, so who is this Joe Biden guy anyway?

Wikipedia says he's a liberal, long serving Democrat senator from Delaware.

He has tons of experience--which is what detractors think Obama lacks. And he has a son serving in Iraq, which I guess means something to some people. (Of course it means something, I'm just not sure it means you're a better candidate for it.)

What else do I need to know about this guy?

[identity profile] vomit-maggots.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Supposedly he is pro-choice, and has voted against supreme court nominees who have been anti-choice. This is a good sign.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I read he is against partial birth abortions, also known as late-term abortions.

Brilliant debater.

Also rides the Amtrak and supports pubic transit.
I'm hopeful.

[identity profile] hortonhearsawho.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I understand the key points are that he is a long time Senator and has experience on the Foreign Relations committee, and that he is not as reluctant as Obama to go on a military offensive. In other words, he's the Anti-bama on two of the issues that the middle of the fence American dislikes in Obama.

I'm honestly sort of in the dark on him myself, this is just what I've read the past few days when everyone was pretty much sure it was going to be him anyway.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much what I've been reading as well.
It looks like a really smart choice.

Check out Feministing. Just read about him on there.

That sounds fair and even handed to me. No candidate is going to be everything we want. But this guy seems okay to me.

I am still writing in "Mickey Mouse" on my ballot.

Meh to them all.

[identity profile] leemoyer.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations!
You elected George Bush twice!

The world weeps at your diffidence.

[identity profile] eroslane.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, the last two elections, I voted AGAINST Bush.

He won anyway.

Last election, I helped vote in a Democratic majority, who promised our country "change".

Uh, nothing changed.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, with that in perspective, I have nothing to lose by writing in "Mickey Mouse" on my ballot.

Thanks for your concern!! :-D

I've loved Joe Biden for years -- ever since he first threw his hat in the ring for president over a decade ago. He's matured a lot since then and has become a brilliant debater and speaker (he was brilliant back then, but was prone to misspeaking). Frankly, I'd rather that he were the candidate for president.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Really?

Interesting. He seems to have quite a few fans out there.

[identity profile] maxverbosity.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Biden has also been a long-serving member of the Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations committes, chairing the former for a time during the elder Bush's administration. He is more or less one of the go-to people for these subjects in Washington.

He voted for the war (but has admitted that vote was a mistake--which doesn't fly with me, but still, it's something); he voted for the Patriot Act and its extension. He voted to ban D&X abortions, which I completely disagree with. His votes have usually been pro-choice otherwise. He also voted for the Defense of Marriage Act.

That said, he supports Amtrak, and he voted against the FISA bill. And he can be a serious sumbitch. A good one to have on Obama's side in the ugly battle ahead of them.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So, you like partial birth abortions? That's sick.
An incision is made in the base of the baby's skull, scissors are placed in the incision to open the hole wider, and the brains are sucked out until the head compresses. I don't even believe in a god, and I know that shit is wrong. It simply cannot continue to be an option if we expect our society to put any value on human life at all.

Considering I used the real medical name for the procedure instead of the politically made up one, you might have assumed I knew what it entailed. Thank you for sharing.

Did you know that the procedure (until it was banned) was used in .17% of all the abortions in the U.S? And that it is mainly used when the fetus is already dead or has hydrocephalus to the degree that it won't survive?

Are you saying you'd rather the woman have to go through labor to expel a dead baby? Or die with the baby trapped inside her? That sounds pretty damned sick to me.

The decision whether to have an abortion or not should be between a woman and her doctor. Period.

Whoa dude,

we don't attack others in this journal.

People aren't "sick" for disagreeing with you.
And again, nobody "likes" abortion.

You make it sound like that Onion article "I'm totally psyched about this abortion" is true.

It seems like a lot of otherwise smart, liberal people voted for the Patriot Act at the time, which is a shame.

But it appears that this Biden guy is a basically good candidate.
