Posting from work again...

It's the slow season so once again I have time to post. I'll be watching the floor for 2 hours today, plus having sales training for another hour. Hopefully, this means my day will go by quickly. I haven't gotten any notes about mistakes in a couple of weeks. So that is cool.

Yesterday I got a bunch of books ready to send out. I'm trying to get some signings, and also convince Borders to carry my book instore instead of just on the website. That would be swell. I'm also trying to get a review by the Ann Arbor news. When I get more books, I'm going to try Fangoria for a review even though that is a long shot. I might as well try the New York Times as long as I'm sending them out. I thought my publisher was going to be doing more of this sort of thing, but it turns out not.

I've been listening to a lot of Jim Dale reading Harry Potter lately. They lull me to sleep at night, so that has been cool and relaxing. I'd like to take a gander at the 800 word prequel that everyone is talking about. And I don't know why Jim Dale can't read Beadle the Bard aloud for me. It's bad enough that I can't buy one...

A customer just called, totally upset that thier cello didn't have any frets on it. They said they expected better from our company and will be taking their business elsewhere in the future.
Cellos do not have frets.

If I get bored enough, I'll be back later with a Friday Five

Geez.

Why can't your company make cellos wrong like everyone else.

This is why the Japanese will rule the world. Do you think Yo Yo Ma has frets? Damn tooting he does sista!!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that YoYo Ma does not have frets.

;-]

[identity profile] eroslane.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Really?

Well, I hope that Yo Yo Ma doesn't lose any sleep over it. I would just hate it if he fretted about it.

::eroslane for the win!:: :-D

LO freakin' L

[identity profile] purplecat-a2.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe your customer has seen kids playing cellos with tape on the fingerboard that their teachers put there so the kids know where to put their fingers, and thought those were frets. Other than that I can't imagine why anyone would think a cello is supposed to have frets.

He was pretty new to the whole stringed-instrument thing...but that's certainly a possibility.

My outlook though, is that if you have no idea what you're talking about, you're supposed to be nice. You don't get to be a loudmouth jerk and also clueless. Oh well.

[identity profile] purplecat-a2.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that people who don't know what they are talking about tend to be the most loudmouthed.

Dear God, if that were true -- you and I wouldn't have jobs. Case-in-point, I *love* when people expect me to load their prepaid cards on to their prepaid phones for them.

I so, so desperately want to ask: "Did you drive here?" ... and they'd ask why, and I'd reply: "Well, piloting an automobile is a hundred times more difficult than this. Would widdle puddin' wike a wide home? Aww."

There's always my favorite analogy: it's exactly like checking out at the supermarket with eggs, milk, flour and butter. And what, you're allowed to bitch out the cashier because they don't make you a *cake?!*

... and yeah, exposing the ignorance of the masses is just too satisfying. I did that last Christmas, and I felt all warm inside.

Hahahahahahaa!

I've been killing them with kindness, which is also a lot of fun. I'm pretty passive aggressive anyway, so it works for me.

[livejournal.com profile] sweetmusic_27, who's been playing the violin since she was three, thinks frets are just insane and don't make sense on any instrument. She seems to think that they confine you to specific pitches, and if they are wrong, you're stuck with them.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an interesting theory.
I can totally see that.

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Which, I neglected to comment in my original comment, is why I found this story particularly hilarious.

As for me, I really can't see how anyone can play a fretless stringed instrument--I am totally in awe of anyone who can get real music out of a fiddle, violin, cello, or stand-up bass.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I know some violinists now who are just incredible on those things. I have no idea how they know where to put their fingers.

[identity profile] hellamama.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Is this the cat book? Is that one out already? Did I miss the preorder? ARGH.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, you didn't. I'm sending copies of the SADIE book to places where I'm trying to get signings or reviews.

I'll let everyone know when the next books come out.

[identity profile] hellamama.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, good. Freaked me out for a minute.
PS, couldn't pick up your commercial in West Michigan. Dad gets no Detroit channels:(

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Dang.

Wolfman Mac is putting my book in a sketch a week from Saturday. I'm gonna record it and hopefully post it once it airs.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I had some dumb ones, but that's a pretty big idiot on the line. Did everybody get a chucke there when you told 'em about the call?

I didn't mind the bass having no frets, but I certainly prefer the structure they give to the fingerboard. It makes it hella easier to get teh right note consistently.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, first I had to tell the guy to watch his language, and once you do that everyone is listening anyway, so they heard.
And yeah, it was pretty funny.

[identity profile] miseryintruder.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hey girl remember me? Well, I was going to be in Ann Arbor on Thursday and was wondering what was up with you; and see if we could get together! It would be fun!!!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, really?
Long time, no hear.

I'm working a weird shift that day: 2-7:30
Let me know if that works.
