TV Reviews

It's high time I had an icon for dulcimer related things. Maybe I'll make one when my new dulcimer finally arrives. I sent out the cheque for it today so I'm hoping I'll have it in 10 days or so. In the mean time, the loaner is coming back today. Woot!

I just realized yesterday that as cool as my book cover is, it doesn't have my pic on it. I sent it in a while ago, I wonder why it didn't end up on the cover. Oh well, the cover looks good how it is. You will all be pleased to learn that my book goes on sale starting April 8th, 2008.

H and I went to Red Robin last night, using the gift card I got for my birthday last year. They have a bottomless lemonade with strawberries in it, which was fairly amazing. H had a 5-alarm burger that he only found mildly spicy but tasty. I had a guacamole and bacon burger because I'm clearly trying to die young. They also had endless fries but we were too full to take advantage of that. We're staying home to watch a movie tonight, probably Citizen X.

Finally it's been revealed that work reviews will be sometime this week. So mine will be totally soon. As you all know, I'm not looking forward to it. But we shall see, no point in stressing.

Now I'm off to watch the trailer for the new M Night Shymalan movie. I love that guy.
Which is your favorite Shymalan movie? Mine is Unbreakable.

[identity profile] diachrony.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Unbreakable, absolutely. Although I haven't seen Lady in the Water yet.

[identity profile] leemoyer.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I concur. :)

But do you guys know the secret subtext?
Hint: it shares a lot with Watchmen in this respect.

[identity profile] leemoyer.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
What's up with Sam Jackson's hair?
Why are his early scenes (even his birth) seen in mirrored surfaces and/or upside down? Why does his shop look like a temple?
Why is the comic villain called Jaguaro?
What's the Aztec word for "black smoking glass"?

Sam is Tezcatlipoca, Aztec god of evil.
Bruce is Quetzacouatl (formerly a player of the "ball game"), whom the big T (whose alternate form is a jaguar) must commit human sacrifice to bring into being.

TO many, the hidden Vedic aspects of Watchmen were a mystery (that's why Doc M is blue and has a dot on his forehead, why the Silk Spectre has a skull necklace and why both are trickily shown with 4 arms), but to M Night, it must have been obvious. Maybe it was the Gunga Diner balloon (Indra's flying Elephant) or Archie (Garuda) breathing fire, but either way, his nationality was likely a boon.

So he made Unbreakable to be the deep tale of America's true religion. Comics mixing it up wit hthe ancient version.
Brilliant, and yet so hidden that even my friend who asked me to design him a Tezcatlipoca tattoo had it was right by him.

Many more details on both Unbreakable and Watchmen available, but better by phone as i type too slowly....
Cheers!

I had no idea. That is some fascinating information. Thanks!

[identity profile] leemoyer.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
You're most welcome. My entire Watchmen treatise is probably worh sharing with you at some point...

I'm all about text and subtext.
But it took me a good 1/2 hour out of the theatre to finally put all the pieces together.

A lot of people complained about Lady in the Water, but I liked it very much.

[identity profile] darkeryet.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The Village, closely followed by Lady In The Water.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The Village had such an amazing cast.

[identity profile] eroslane.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it sure did.

And they were wasted.

You and I share a favorite M. Night Shama-lama-ding-dong movie, just as we share H. (Oh, you didn't know?! *ZING!*)

If I die of anything, I'm sure I will die of "bacon." I'd sure rather die of 'bacon' than 'snorting too much coke off the glistening chest of a barely-legal twink!'

No, wait ...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, it's possible to snort "too much" coke? I had no idea...

[identity profile] eroslane.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
5-Alarm Burger sounds deeeeeeeeeeeelicious!!!

This will come as no surprise to you.

M. Night? How about Meh Night.

I figured out SIXTH SENSE on opening day because I'd seen CARNIVAL OF SOULS 94823421 times as a child.

THE VILLAGE I figured out two months before the movie opened. (Working at the cinema, I saw the preview, wrote how it would turn out on a piece of paper, sealed it in an envelope and we locked in the the safe to review later.) Am I a genius? Nope. I'd just seen TWILIGHT ZONE 981872312 times since I was a kid.

LADY IN THE WATER? Worst trailer ever = ain't going/can't make me. Which was also why I didn't see UNBREAKABLE, despite the Samuel to the L Jackson being in it.

SIGNS was okay, clear up until they showed the alien. WTF? The movie was genius until that moment, and pablum afterwards. I was so pissed. I think I was the only person in the audience of 200+ that stormed out cussing and swearing.

I figured you would have strong feelings about this. Thank you for posting them here.

Alot of people dislike "Signs" but I enjoy it quite a bit. "Sixth Sense" is always a good watch too.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's difficult for me to dislike any movie with Joaquin Phoenix in it.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He really is great. I didn't like him the first time I saw him, which was when he was still a kid, but he's turned out to be amazing. I can't imagine anyone else playing Johnny Cash.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I own Citizen X and it's one of HBO's best movies to date. That's a pretty good article: very thorough. It really is a stunning film.

Have you seen it?

[identity profile] eroslane.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I saw it years ago on HBO. Not the first time, one of the other times they ran it. I was fascinated. I thought Donald Sutherland gave one of his best performances!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a good one.
Jeffery DeMunn is incredibly creepy and yet still sympathetic.

Re: off topic with The Simpsons....

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Very nice.

Re: Off topic...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
What the fuck was that?!?

*shudder*

Terrifying in every possible sense.

Re: Off topic...

[identity profile] eroslane.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I'm not sure what in the hell that was either? I was hoping you could figure it out!!

[identity profile] kissdbyagnome.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I like Signs, The Village and Sixth Sense best. If I had to pick one out of the three, I think id lean towards Sixth Sense. But I loved all of those three movies. But I think the other two I loved because Joaquin Phoenix was in them. If I hadn't married Ian i'm convinced Joaquin would have been the man for me.

The Village's plot was very close to a Tales From the Dark Side episode I'd seen. That was my only complaint.

AND I didn't know there WAS a new M. Night Shymalan movie coming out. I dunno how that hapend.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, Matt Damon is in it.
It's a pretty good trailer.
