Then Again...

Got paid today.

Working much of my ass off has allowed me the disposable income to purchase ,this dulcimer outfit, which I may well do after my lesson on Tuesday. Or I may look around some more.

It looks like a good instrument for a beginner, which is me. Then again, building from a kit might have it's advantages. This one is at a great price though, maybe suspiciously great?

LOST was awesome. A really fantastic season opener. I love when they follow Hurley, and I was shocked at what almost transpired between Jack and Locke. I love Rousseau and Rose & Bernard. I hope they find a way to not leave the island, but we won't know until perhaps, next week. I want to know what Locke and Jacob were talking about. And I want Hurley to end up happy, dammit.

Who wants to guess who the "Oceanic Six" are?

I'll guess:

Hurley
Kate
Jack
Jin
Sun
Juliet
(I know she wasn't on the plane, but I still think it'll be her)

And before Hurley even got out of the car I knew it was him because.... When he crashed he crashed into MIRRORS. Bad Luck = Hurley. Awesome. And if for the rest of the series they flash FORWARD then its the most awesome show ever.

I agree.

Katie guessed it was Hurley too.

Indeed.

We were also impressed with the opener.
And I've always been critical of that show, thinking they lead us on without having any real answers to whats going on. Almost like they're making shit up to make things work.

But I'm digging it so far.

Close to $100 bucks for a beginners instrument isnt a bad deal.

*nods*

Yep, it failed to disappoint alright.

And yeah, I'm prolly gonna buy that dulcimer if the teacher guy thinks it's a good idea.

See, I don't follow the show, cuz I never saw more than the first couple of episodes, and Lost requires full attention, you know? But last night it was on and the remote was too far away, and I was all confused by the Oceanic Six thing, because I was all, "Um, there are more than six." Okay, I get it, some are gonna die. And then I was just confused about who everybody was, and what they were doing, and what was going on. There are a ton of people on there that I didn't recognize, cuz, you know, I don't follow.

BUT did you see the commercials played later that night for Oceanic Airlines with the weird black and white cut ins? What the heck is THAT? Weird advertising? There's a totally fake website up, too. Is that new?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
There are "fake" websites for Dharma, Hanso Foundation, and Oceanic. I didn't watch the next show, so I missed the fake ad with all its wierdness. I'll probably check it out when I get home from work. It should be on youtube by then.

;-]

It's really worth picking up the seasons on DVD.

It DOES require full attention. I am constantly having to explain to Cecil who is who and when and what is happening, because he thinks linearly and can't keep up when they flash back and forward.

I'm also dying to see who the other 3 are in the 6, and what happened to the other 30 or so. I'm pretty sure they don't all die.

The great rule of cheap-ass musical instruments: Have an experienced player test the instrument before paying for it. Typically quality control is the the weak point--the instrument that gets thrown into the box with your address may or may not be the one with the warped fretboard or improperly-installed bridge that buzzes or is otherwise essentially unplayable. Without testing it out in person, you cannot know if it is the bargain of the century, or an expensive decorative wall-hanging.

My cheap-ass little uke cost all of $30, but I picked it up at Herb David Guitar Studio, where I was able to test it out in person. I know of at least one person who ordered one of the same model online, only to discover it was unplayable because of a warped neck.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yikes, that's no good.

I'll have to make sure they have a good return policy just in case. Where around here is a good place to buy a dulcimer anyway? Herb DAvid doesn't even have then on their website.

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The current music stores in town are Herb David, which usually has a couple of used ones on consignment, and Oz's music which sometimes has one.

Frankly the pickins around here are pretty slim. Even Elderly Instruments up in Lansing, which is considered a folkie mecca doesn't have much selection.

I think you really have to go to a festival to find much selection--though the nearest festivals are typically a good 4-5 hour's drive away.

If you're still interested in a couple of weeks, we could do a field trip and see what's available close to home.

If I buy the one from Amazon, can you help me check it out and see if it's junk? I'll have a month to return it if it's not good.

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. I'd be happy to.

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I stopped at Oz's music on the way home from the post office tonight. They have the same inexpensive ($120-$130) mountain dulcimer I've seen there for a number of years. It's not an especially beautiful instrument (but what you'd expect for the money), but it plays well--it can make pretty music. I mentioned that a friend was looking for something inexpensive and had spotted something online for under $100, and she said that they could come down on the price, since it's been in the store for so long. I'd say that if you find you like playing the dulcimer, and that one appeals to you, that it's a decent starter instrument for under $100.

But the ukes I saw at Oz's suck. Really crappy tuners on them.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Neat. Thanks!

I kind of jumped the gun and ordered the one from Amazon this afternoon. But if it turns out to be junk, I'm glad to know I can go to Oz's and get something pretty sounding.

You da man!

So if Kate is one of the six, I keep wondering, has she assumed someone else's identity? Since the real Kate is a fugitive from justice.

But let's say for now, we know it's Jack, Hurley and Kate. That means Sun and Jin and Rose and Bernard all can't make it off!

But I'll go with: Jack, Hurley, Kate, Sayid, Sawyer, Desmond. Desmond also not being a survivor of the crash, like Juliet in your list. Geez what about Michael and Walt? I keep asking that. And what's the deal with Jack's dad, the finale from season 3 made it sound like he's still alive... and he was on the flight, right? Just, as a corpse.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think Jack was fairly out of it when he made that comment about "go see if my dad is drunker than me" or whatever. I think he honestly forgot his Dad was dead. I dunno though, he was on the flight.

I presume Kate still has the dead woman's ID she stole in season one. Or maybe she was tried and freed after all the publicity surrounding her.

Michael is due to appear this season.
