Boris the Spider:

One of my non-lj buddies and I have been arguing about Pete Townsend and his being investigated by SY for possibly having some kiddie porn. Pete though, has been outspoken on being against child porn for many years, as he beleives he was messed with by his mentally ill grandmother. He is also writing his autobiography...so he claims that he was on those sites for research. Obviously kiddie porn is gross and wrong, but should going to a website really be a crime? I think not.

The sick jerk-off taking pics of kids as sex objects and posting them should be arrested, prosecuted, and kept far away from children. But, just going to a website, even if you pay, should never, ever be a crime in this country. (Pete is in England, but still).

My buddy says that child porn is wrong, period. And anyone who looks at it should go to jail. He also threw his best of Pete, and Quadrophenia CD's in the trash...which I think it ridiculous. I also think if that is his attitude, he is a hypocrite if he doesn't also get rid of Stones, Zepplin, Peter Paul and Mary, The Doors, and any other band with a member who has had sex with an underage girl. He doesn't seem to agree with that part though.

Tell me, am I being silly? Is he? I need outside opinions...

As many problems that the two of you have been having over this topic, yes, I think you're both taking it a bit far. You've also heard me say this. Can't you both just know you have different feelings on the topic, and leave it at that? There are plenty of albums or movies I won't see or buy because I don't agree with something the artist has done. I might even throw them away if I felt strongly enough about it. But that's my decision to make, and no one elses. It's my stuff, and I'll throw it away if I like.

Now, from his standpoint, yeah it's a bit weird, but not an uncommon belief. But why is it bothering you so much? I only somewhat agree with your stand, and I refuse to get into it with you because this topic is not what our friendship is based on. I have friends with radically different political and religious views, but their still my friends, some of my best friends.

yes well, that's all fine.
But he needs to admit he's a jerk.

And those CD's should have neded up at my house, not in the stupid trash can.

Besides, if I was being a total hypocrite I would expect a good friend to tell me.

I guess I could throw an album in the trash for some similar type of reason but I'd have to be royally angry at the artist. And I do know it's useless cuz the album has been paid for so it wouldn't hurt the artist one bit. Getting rid of the thing by giving it away would make more sense if someone wanted the album. It's very difficult to imagine being so angry that I'd stop enjoying the music I used to love tho.

About the kiddie porn thing I dunno. I'm not familiar with the Townsend case nor do I know what The Stones, Doors etc did. Kiddie porn is very very bad in my book and buying it should be a criminal act. Paying for an access to a kiddie porn site would be a crime then I guess. I can see how that is problematic tho... What if you're just doing research etc... Gah.

yeah, I see what you mean.

It's just such a crazy thing, and when kids are involved, I think people forget any ability they once had to be compassionate, or even to wait for the facts to come out.

I think throwin thm in the trash is a bit silly, in a similar situation I would sell or give them away. But they are his, he has the right to throw them away if he wants to.

I am of two minds when it comes to kiddie porn. *Of Course* it should be illigal to make it. But to look at it. On the one hand, I can understand why that is illegal, especially if you are paying to look at it. But what about the people who use it as an outlet? If looking at kiddie porn willl stop even one potential cild molestor from actually touching a child, then it should be legal to look at it. I don't know, it's a sticky topic.

Yeah, it is sticky. Luckily, he and I are no longer fighting about it...he has chilled out and so have I.
