After witnessing the miracle that was BattleStar Galactica, I had to give SciFi Channel the benefit of the doubt when it came to their new series Flash Gordon. So far, I gotta say meh.

Everyone is real pretty, just like on the WB. I have a feeling it will get good once we get past the basic setups and character development. For now, I'm going to continue to watch, even though all the chicks are freakishly similar and the commercials I'm forced to endure have been godawful.

I can't even tell if that little nerdy guy is even Dr Zarkov. I'm just gonna assume he is.

There's plenty of all new story here, Flash has a family and a first name. Dale Arden has a fiance who is not Flash. Oh wait, maybe she doesn't. And Flash looks incredibly familiar. Where have I seen him before?

And in case you had any doubts, Ming is quite Merciles, and Mongo is a dump.
I'm delighted that they are using a new version of the old Queen music.
Nice.

And now, I'm off to watch Big Love so K and N and I can talk about it when I see them.

I was really hoping they would take the campy movie from the 80s and tweak it with some drama, ala BSG. I don't think it's gonna happen, though. This feels really lukewarm for me. I'm not even sure...is the Winnebago Guy supposed to be a Zarhkov? And frankly, I don't think they have the budget to do Hawkmen.

I do think the Winnebago guy is Zarkov, but yeah, it's no BSG. Not yet anyway...it feels more like an ep of Doctor Who without the charisma.

Have you got the 80s DVD yet? I got it yesterday. I watched the movie and then I watched the first chapter of the old movie serial which is included as a bonus feature. I can't see that the new folks have even remotely looked at that or the original source comics with what they appeared to be doing Friday night.

They've got one or two more chances to convince me that I need to stay at home on Fridays.

My copy of the Flash Gordon movie is an old VHS that's been watched to death. I may upgrade, I don't know yet. I do love Max von Sydow as Ming.

Yeah, I'm gonna give it another chance, but I don't have high hopes.
