Of all the nerve!

Famed radio dickhead Don Imus is now suing his former employer, CBS, for 40 million dollars. Apparently they encouraged him to engage in "extraordinary, irreverent, and controversial" topics. I'm gonna be honest with you, I consider myself all three of those things, and yet I'm not a racist ass (or a prejudiced ass, depending on where you are in that debate). I know how I feel about it, but there may be some validity to the assertion that they want him to be controversial and edgy and then fire him because people are pissed off. That becomes the question: was he fired because what he said was offensive and uncalled for, or was he fired because people got pissed about what he said? I can't imagine that was the first time he'd ever insulted anyone on his show, after all. (then again maybe it was, i never listened to him)

[Poll #978449]

While I have you all here, have you heard about the ten foot long sea serpent they just discovered? I just love it when scientists are baffled.

I forgot to post about LOST this week, . This weeks ep was AWESOME. We guessed a long time ago that Locke's Dad was the "real" Sawyer. But I was surprised that our Sawyer killed him so readily and with his bare hands (mostly). I always love it in movies when someone kills someone with their bare hands.
Juliet continues to be untrustworthy, as does Jack by virtue of him trusting her. And I think Ben Linus is telling the Gods honest truth about the big wishing box. But I do NOT think they are in hell. Babies can't be born in hell because, Ew. All in all, I wish they'd give us a bit more information, but I think things are moving right along. I think we're headed for a crazy ass season finale.

My book contracts came in the mail today. I kind of wish I had a lawyer to look over such things for me. I just don't feel capable in that regard. I know it's a good contract though. the publisher guy is a good one, trustworthy and all that there. Plus I get 2 author copies and a whole bunch of review copies, both paperback and pdf. So that's all good. I just have to appeal to all the bookstore workers and librarians I know to order copies. I'll be doing that when it's close to release time and I get the IBSN number and all.

The Don Imus situation is too complex for your poll. I want to say that he doesn't deserve the money, because CBS had the right to fire him. But I don't necessarily agree that he should have been fired for what he said. He has a point, they want him to piss off people, but when he pisses off the wrong people they fire him. But he's already wealthy, and he clearly is an ass hole, so I voted fuck Imus.

This article makes some sense regarding the PC firings of late.
http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/dhenninger/?id=110010019
But the write of the article fails to point out the main difference between the various unPC entertainments. When South Park and the Daily Show behave unPC it's pretty well understood that Trey and Matt, and Jon Stewart aren't racists. That is apparently not true when Don Imus acts unPC.

I did hear about the new sea snake. It's freaky looking.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-04 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Jon Stewart is actually quite PC. I am unable to think of anything he's said that pisses me off--then again, I tend to agree with him.

Trey and Matt get in trouble for their work fairly often, but they make Comedy Central so much money that they don't do anything about it. They haven't even pulled an episode yet, despite numerous threats that they would.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2007-05-05 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Has Al Sharpton gone after Trey and Matt? Or Jesse Jackson?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-05 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

As have Tom Cruise, the Mormons, the scientologists, and PFLAG if you can believe that.

I've never listened to Imus. What I know about him I don't like. However, the reason CBS gave for firing him was complete bullshit. I hope he does get the money, not because he deserves it so much as to set an example. Imus was hired as a shock jock. The comment he made wasn't really that shocking but even if it had been, he was doing the job for which he was hired. CBS had no right to fire him because of that statement. And they didn't. They fired him because his ratings weren't hot enough to bother with keeping him around. The controversy over his statement, warranted or not, gave them an opportunity and they ran with it.

I don't listen to Imus or any of those other dweebs. But from what I've heard, the firing was acceptable to CBS because of his ratings. He's really only 'in' inside the DC Beltway. Limbaugh says shit like this (and worse) all the time, and he'll never be fired. He's suggested people be assassinated, and yet no firing. Disgusting.

They should all be fired.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2007-05-04 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not believe Rush suggested an actual assasination. He does not strike me that way...and no they should NOT ALL be fired.

Hmm, googling is not helping me find what I want, and I admit, I may have been confusing the one specific issue I was thinking of with Pat Robertson's call to assassinate Hugo Chavez. I can't really tell one neocon wingnut from another, to be honest.

That said, considering Limbaugh did say that the Abu Graib torture scandal was nothing more than frat boy pranks and folks letting off steam, I'm not as convinced of his nonmurderous tendencies as you might be.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-04 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's partially right. Frat boys often to sadistic, gay, brutal or dangerous things to pledges all the time...drunk on their own power they are.

[personal profile] groovesinorbit 2007-05-04 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no, no! You have it backwards. Frat hazings are completely healthy, wholesome and all-American, just like the torture in Iraq. What are you, some kind of terrorist?!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ha!

At least I didn't vote for Bush twice, like someone in this thread.

Now that is a true American.

Wait, Rush does not strike you that way?

I would say that RL is the most offensive pundit I've ever heard in my life. Even before he insulted all drug users (he himself has a huge pill addiction) he's been my least fave guy ever. He is hateful, moronic, and wishes doom on anyone who doesn't agree with him.

[identity profile] purplecat-a2.livejournal.com 2007-05-04 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the only reason the fired him was because the sponsors were starting to pull out.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-04 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sponsors are the bottom line I think. Oh well, it's not like we're gonna miss him. ;-]

Plus, if they're in hell, where do the dead one's go? They're too subtle for that....I'd hope. This season is still not my fave.

Re: Lost

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-05 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
NO, the first season is by far the best.
I can't imagine they are really in hell either, it is too obvious, plus you can't have babies in hell.

[identity profile] fyreangel.livejournal.com 2007-05-05 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait wait wait!!! I have the answer..
Fuck everyone :P hahah..
Yeah.. I'm still sick.. and possibly delusional.
Let's just take him and throw him off a bridge! (and I've been watching WAY too much Sopranos!)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-05-06 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think that will be fine.

And I'm not sure you can EVAR watch too much Sopranos. ;-]

The problem, in my opinion, with the Imus thing is that he was not fired for saying something stupid and wholy offensive. It was that he was fired because ADVERTISERS took notice and started dropping from his show. Censorship by commericalization. It turns out however that he has a clause in his contract that states that he can't be fired without warning. The other problem with it is, look at what Morning radio really is in this country. Its stupid idiots doing stupid things and generally acting juvinile. Look at Stern, or Mancow or even my personal favorite (even still) Drew and Mike. You don't really go to these people for political commentary and if Drew and Mike call "Harry Sack" how offended can anyone really be in the end. In my mind the real problem is that everyone suddenly started acting like we should CARE what Imus says. When we as a society make it such a big deal, it almomst gives the guy credibility that he so richly does not deserve. We don't expect Howard Stern to really be an expert on lesbians, so why let Imus be an expert on Womens College Basketball?

Congrats on the contracts!

I hate how Lost only heats up at the beginning and end of a season! Thats the worst thing about the way TV is set up, I swear

While it doesn't make what he said any better, this is absolutely true. But I'll still be chuffed if he gets $40 million after letting everyone know what a dick he is.

I also agree about sweeps. LOST is not the show it once was, to be sure. Still, I gotta keep watching because I must know how it all works out. All I can say is that it better wrap up in five years, and it better be fucking brilliant.

The firing states a great deal about freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is often not limited through law in 2007 (sans AETA, etc.), but by consumer power or financial pressure, e.g. Dixie Chicks, Superbowl Nipple, etc. CBS is a business and if it brought Imus into this world, it has the right to take him out. I couldn't give a fuck less about Imus or CBS, and in a lot of ways I would rather just watch them do themselves in.

Like I said in the message I deleted to put this one up: When I get my MLS, I will make sure your books on order -- though it will be a few years :-)
