Taste my nerdy blade!

I am nerdier than 78% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Found out last night that ROME season 2 is only 10 episodes long. I bet that will not stop HBO from selling it at some crazy, more than $70 price. I can tell you that as much as I love HBO series, I will never EVER buy one. Their seasons are less than half the length of a normal season, and the prices are more than twice as much. And this is after the $15 a month I already pay for HBO. That said, I feel sad for Lucius Vorenus, and Pullo too. They are good guys. Octavian, OTOH, is some kind of freak. I daresay this is not what I took away from my history books. ;-] And as much as I hate Gaia, it was cool to see her kicking ass like a warrior.

Got an Email over the weekend from somebody who wants my support on a big project. I've got some projects of my own going on, as well as somethings I'm helping folks out with. You know what gets me though--this person has never supported me or my projects in any way. Didn't even say a word when my novel got published. Now I think I'd feel totally resentful if I even began to help this person. I don't require quid pro quo for help, but I think people have quite a nerve asking for things they choose not to provide in return. Gee, maybe I AM asking for quid pro quo. What do you guys think? Am I evil or mean for not working on this project? I fear I'll just be angry if I do it, and I've got some projects that I actually want to work on. Like I'm stoked about doing the Haunted Hillsdale press packet, for example.

Have you ever known anyone who listened to the Ween country album and didn't know it was a joke?
I have. And damn, it is ever funny!!

But is it a joke? I mean, I know that Ween tend to write comical lyrics (I was an original Pod era fan but never got into anything post Pure Guava too much although I liked what I heard now and then) but the thing is, they are great fans of so many different styles and they ape them so well that I can see them doing that album with a real love for the music but with their funny sensibilities still intact. I also remember reading that they had some pretty amazing musicians work on it so I'm wondering if it's any more of a joke than any other Ween release, you know?

That is a valid point. I refer specifically to the song "Piss up a Rope," which IMHO is the funniest song, and the one that bashes rednecks the best. A redneck I used to know thought it was the best new song he'd ever heard, and the most honest. As if "on your knees you big booty bitch start suckin'" was his new mantra for how to deal with women.

But yeah, Ween is pretty goofy and funny no matter what. But even the music on this one is sarcastic as hell, "I'm holding you" for example, is twangy to the point of absurdity. I don't see it as an attempt to make good country music with funny lyrics. I think the individual songs would be more catchy and memorable if they were. But I suppose it could go either way. I don't know the dudes personally, so I have no idea what they might have been thinking except maybe "let's take some more X". ;-]

Nope, not evil. Sounds like you have every reason not to help the person. If you know you're going to be resentful and have other projects you'd rather work on, definitely give it a pass. Why waste your time; it's just as valuable as the other person's.

Yeah, I think more than anything I dread that they will probably try to lay a guilt trip on me, then I have to be the asshole.

Just keep in mind that they're being the asshole, not you. They want to usurp your time, when they don't want to bother giving you anything. As long as you're not rude about saying no, you haven't done anything wrong. Fight the power! : )

I believe I will, thanks!

All acts are inherently selfish. So refusing to help would be no more or less wrong than helping. Decide based on which decision will bring you the most happiness.

While one could make the argument (as I believe we have, many times) that all acts are selfish, what we really mean is that all acts have an impact on the self; and that the self should be regarded when making any decision. That's true, and a good point.

At the same time, there's a difference between regarding one's self and being a selfish bastard. I'd rather not wake up one day and find that I'M a selfish bastard. it can be a slippery slope.
