Here is a promotional poster for the Manga comic featuring the Simpsons. Or is it a Simpsons comic done in Manga style. The world may never know... Neat, eh?

H and I are celebrating the love holiday today. We went to see Pan's Labyrinth at the movies. I have to say I didn't expect it to be so disturbing in parts. I should have though, it IS Guillermo Del Toro after all. So even though it looks all magical and fantastical, don't be taking your kids to it. It's rated R for a reason. That said, this was an excellent film with lots of surprises and a thoroughly unguessable ending. As I've often said, European Fairy Tales pull all the stops, unlike wussy American ones. Anyway, I'm also making H a nice almond coffee cake from my awesome cake recipe book. Hopefully we will not lose power due to the storm.

There are a lot of good horror movies coming out soon. Even though Hannibal Rising is terrible by all counts, we still have the Number 23, Hills Have Eyes 2, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and a few more I'm sure I'm forgetting. We can really use some good horror movies. then again, I'm a little behind, still not having seen SAW 3 yet.

My new novel is tentatively titled Abolition of Redemption. I started writing the first chapter last night, but didn't get very far since I had to go out. But like I keep saying, it's gonna be a good one.

In other news, it's snowing like crazy now. I bet my whole day tomorrow will be canceled. Yeah!!! Whooooo! And so on.

I should have known you would know the scoop on this. Indeed, I'd love to see the Futurama one.
Do hook me up!

Gosh, Marge is totally hot in that picture. I absolutely love her hair!!

I know I'm going to buy Pan's Labyrinth when it comes out on DVD, but I probably won't see it before I buy it. Speaking of European fairy tales ... have you seen The City of Lost Children? It isn't gory but it's wonderful.

Of course I'm sure you've seen it already. Maybe I should just go ahead and ask you for more recs of European fairy tale films! ... consider yourself asked!

I think "Abolition of Redemption" is a really good title.

Flanders looks so exceptionally homosexual! Homosexceptional!

Thanks, man.

See you tonight.

I have seen city of Lost Children, which I enjoyed very much. I was so sure the girl in the red dress was going to die. I was glad she didn't. I'd suggest the Russian Nightwatch if you haven't seen it already, and the French cartoon Fantastic Planet. That's just off the top of my head. I'll noodle this some more and get back with you.

Thanks, the book title is a quote from the Moors Murderer, Ian Brady. He describes his crossover into murder as the "psychic abolition of redemption." Once he had actually murdered someone, he felt there was no saving him; and it wouldn't matter how many people he killed at that point. I don't know if it's that simple, but it's a great title for a book!

If you'll note the above comment, there's a link to the Futurama one as well.

It took me a minute to realize that in the States you have the 'EVERYTHING IS RATED R' rating system. Hah, silly me.

The Number 23 looks hilarious. But only because Jim Carrey looks exactly like my drama teacher, so I can never, ever take him seriously.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, PG13 is the more encompassing rating of the three main ones. Most filmmakers try for the PG13 rating so they can capture the younger audience.

Generally an R rating means the movie hasn't been dumbed down for children and you can expect a plot designed for adults, some violence and/or boobies, and maybe the word "fuck" a few times. But you can also see boobies in PG movies. Airplane comes to mind...but now I'm starting to babble.

Poor Jim Carrey. Nobody wants to take him seriously, and he's so good in stuff. I love him in 'Cable Guy' and Eternal Sunshine.

Did you know there's a Saw IV on the way?

Right. Of course you did. ;P

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I didn't. I heard it was going to be a trilogy. That's how it's arranged on my DVD shelf, and I don't really feel like changing it.

Stupid SAW...
