Gay Rights, and dinner.

Here is our sumptuous feat for date night.
Here is our sumptuous feast for date night.

We have date night every Monday. Usually I cook a big meal and tonight was no exception. There is falafel with cucumber sauce, shish kafta with yogurt sauce, hommus with tiny pita rounds, mushroom almond pilaf, veggies, feta, and wraps. Most everything was made from scratch. I used a falafel mix, just because the mixes are awesome.

Mmmm...
Mmmm...

This is hypothetically what this meal might look like on my plate before I ate it. ;-]

As you can see here, H is pretty excited. You can also see much of my altar in the background.

On another topic, I've seen this in a journal or two and am copying it for the sake of solidarity. Frankly I can't imagine why anyone cares "who really beleives in gay rights on Livejournal." That's quite arbitrary IMHO.

"Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?" - Ernest Gaines

We would like to know who really believes in gay rights on LiveJournal. There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in gay rights, then repost this and title the post as "Gay Rights". If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this.Thanks.

I must say though, that I'm not entirely comfortable with the phrase "gay rights." Before anyone freaks, I want to be clear in saying that I support equal rights for everyone, which would of course include gay people. Duh. That's kind of my point, I don't support "gay rights" as much as I support equal rights for all people. I do NOT support discrimination based on who people fall in love with. Could you straighties imagine housing or job discrimination because someone doesn't approve of who you date? It's one of the stupidest, most nonsensical things out there. I honestly don't understand how anyone can defend such a mindset.
At the same time, I suspect that terminology like "gay rights" serves more to catagorize people and seems more in line with the "special rights" banner that homophobes and bigots waive. Again, I'm not talking about the ideology, simply the phrasing. I support human rights. They apply to all humans.
I have to laugh as I type this because I've had discussions with several of you regarding the use of the word "gay" with a negative connotation as in the phrase That's so gay! So you may find it amusing that I'm posting about these kind of semantics, but you know...I'm a complicated lass. Hey! I said lass.

Tuesday afternoon (later today) is my interview with The March of Dimes. I would like very much to get this 30-35 hour a week, office management gig. So, wish me the luck!

The phrsae that bothers me is... If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this.

So now if I don't copy this to my journal it somehow means that I don't support gays. It gets me irritated with the original poster more than it encourages me to post the message. I don't like people trying to manipulate me.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
PS Good luck on the interview.

Good luck!

And yeah, it's all human rights. I was a little annoyed by that meme, too.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
PPS Here is something that came to mind later that I thought you might appreciate. Coretta Scott King initially took no stance on 'gay' rights. But later she changed her mind with the realization that they aren't an issue of 'gay' rights, they're an issue of civil rights.

[identity profile] maxverbosity.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose that's why I make a point of saying that it is about the right to be human, because the whole idea of such rights would be to erase such artificial distinctions.

Good luck on the interview!

Sending you good luck MoJo!

Thanks!

And yeah, that H is a cute one.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think choosing not to post it is the same as ignoring it. You are discussing it, after all.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, man.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
She is awesome in real life. My old roomate used to work with one of her charities.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
True enough.

And thanks, I could do with an end to my relentless unemployment. ;-]

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweet! thanks.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

I can totally cook it again next time you're in town. You might want to have a snack between now and then, though. ;-]

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

Yeah, every now and again I get a crazy falafel craving that must be satisfied.

[identity profile] diachrony.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome yummy looking food. H sure seemed happy (who wouldn't?)!

Very good luck wishes! :)

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but you must admit it's not written in a polite tone.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe that if you surveyed the country you would find that most people claiming that they support for Civil Rights but not Gay Rights. I would have thought that Mrs. King would have had more of an impact on that. But then again, I didn't know her stance on the issue until just recently.

[identity profile] fyreangel.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Yum. *Looks down at her condenced soup* Hrm.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm back from the interview. I won't know for two weeks. I'll probably still be eating leftover hommus then. ;-]

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that initially; but now I wonder if it's not more a matter of poor writing skills than a desire to offend. Or, it might have been written by a teenager--while many teens write well, many more don't.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah well, I thought Rob Halford and Mark Hamill coming out would have pretty much ended homophobia...but no.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Condensed soup?!?

I thought you guys only ate "Kraft Dinner."
;-]

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess is that it was written by someone who didn't know that their tone was aggressive. Someone probably pissed the writer off.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah well, I didn't know Mark Hamill was gay till you told me, and I didn't know Rob Halford was gay till I read your comment.

I just don't care if people are gay.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Know how I know you're gay?

...

[identity profile] fyreangel.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Hell, You couldn't pay me enough to eat that shit.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Really?
I likes it when I get in the mood for trailer park food; goes great with a fried bologna sammich!

Oh my...that does look so yummy..the falafel, the hummus..Eee! My family would make yuck faces if I made that :(

I agree with you on the equal rights for everyone..not so much special... because everyone is special..just like everyone else.

Good luck with the job!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
