Laying Low

I've been laying pretty low these days. The job situation (or lack thereof) is once again getting me down. I was close to getting a sales support job when they decided to check my credit. Myself, I don't know of any bi-polar people who have good credit, unless they've been successfully treated for a long time. The very definition of the illness is that when manic, you spend money you don't really have on things you can't really afford...because you're sure it will all work out later. So the upshot is that people judge my overall ability to manage my life on some arbitrary numbers that can only be adequately explained by divulging things it is illegal for them to ask about. Nice, no?

In a few hours, I'm meeting with my Fetching Employment Counselor to discuss all this. I also applied for a few other gigs this week, one of which is actually in my field (so of course it pays like crap and is not really full time). I can't help thinking that I didn't have these kind of job related issues until I moved to Ann Arbor. Detroit, and even Ypsi doesn't make it this hard to find employment. Frown.

H bought me a few things I needed though, so that was cool. He got me some new socks made by Wilson, whom I thought only made imaginary friends for Otm Shank. The socks are comfy and padded and have W's on the back. I also got a clippy desk lamp for my work space so I don't go blind, a brita filter, and some ink for the printer (which I always seem to need more than he does). When I went to Group tonight, one of the girls gave me a new purse, which is really cute even though it's not quite big enough for my water. But I'm trying to carry a purse like a normal chick, rather than lugging a backpack around like a student.

How Old is Your Inner Child?

My inner child is ten years old!

The adult world is pretty irrelevant to me. Whether I'm off on my bicycle (or pony) exploring, lost in a good book, or giggling with my best friend, I live in a world apart, one full of adventure and wonder and other stuff adults don't understand.

I guess that would explain why I've been watching Pee Wee's Playhouse and playing Pac the Man all night.
Also, isn't this new icon hilarious? Yes...I think so too.

While I'm here, early congrats to [livejournal.com profile] maxverbosity who becomes a dad today.
Way to impregnate your wife! Whooooooo!!

Why on earth would someone need to run a credit check on you for a job?

Apparently employers think it's an indicator of your overall ability to manage your life properly. Problem is, things like hospital stays, divorce, identity theft, or various disabilities keep lots of repsonsible people from having good credit.

Things like not needed to a credit card or not having to borrow money stop people too, which would to me seem like an indication of managing a life well.

That credit check thing seems illegal to me.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems that way, but I'm told a lot of places do it.

Gotta love the new world order.

The really dumb thing is that the worse your credit the more likely that you will need a job.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well sure.

Hey, are you going to Dan's on Saturday or do I need to find a date?

[identity profile] diachrony.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. For my current job (with an HMO) they checked everything. It was intrusive. Not that I have anything to "hide" - I mean anything that they would've considered a negative - but it's none of their damn business. Like the credit history, and testing my hair for pot and stuff. This pisses me off on principle. Aargh!

The icon is awesome.

Did you know Blockbusters national, written policy requires hair testing of all prospective employees. They dont' do that in MI, which is how I got to work for them. But that's just crazy. Plus I find that hair tests are sexist since men can shave their head and it's "normal" but chicks really don't have that option.

[identity profile] diachrony.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh ... but I'm told that if you have no hair on your head, they just take it from elsewhere, if you get my drift ...

Oh dear!

I'll never understand why a credit check is sometimes part of a hiring process. What does spending too much money have to do with being able to hold down a job?! It's really mean because the people with bad credit need a job the most!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just nobody else's business what shape my finances are in. And since mine are tied to mental illness issues, my choice is either to bare everything in defense of my choices, or keep my mouth shut on principle and lose the job.

;-{

But on the plus side, I had a good talk with my job guy today. So I'm feeling a bit better and have some new ideas.

Yes, I do think that new Avatar is funny. A hoot, even!

Ba, I think it's crazy that employers can even do this. Michigan is pretty rough on employment (being a fire at will state an all.) Hey, maybe thats why there are no jobs in Michigan. Nah, bad government is the reason...but it was a thought.

Happily, I had a good meeting with my job guy today. He's hooking me up with a new developer who seems more my speed than the chick I'm with now. She hadn't done crap for me (except send me to that damn dance studio). ;-{
