This is getting old.

The job "interview" (receptionist at a dance boutique/studio) was a waste of fucking time.

Even if I don't speak your language, I can still discern a derisive snort when I hear one.
I realize I am not the usual body type of someone working in a dance studio.

But you know what?

Let's say you are an average looking person, and you're thinking about dance lessons. There's a new studio opening up, and they have ads with pictures of amazing looking women, made even more amazing by air brushing and beautiful costumes and shoes. You go in to ask for information, and yet another perfect looking woman tells you about the many dances and singles events they have and shows you pictures of many perfect looking people looking fabulous. You leave, thinking you'll return after you tone up a little, lose ten pounds and maybe get a hair cut. Six months go by and you forget all about it.

OR

You're that same average person. Except this time when you go into the studio for information, you see me, [livejournal.com profile] wednes there, looking like her usual snappy self and telling you that if she can dance, you certainly can. You sign up, meet the man of your dreams, take all his money and get your own dance studio. Isn't that a nice story? Well, you can forget it, because I didn't get the job being the receptionist at the dance studio.

I put "interview" in quotes because they didn't actually interview me. They didn't ask anything at all except was my name really Wednesday and did I bring a pen with me. I'm annoyed with the place, and more annoyed with my job developer, who really should be doing better by me, IMHO.

Anyway...Frown.

Usually the people who work as receptionists at dance studios are mothers of girls who want more dance lessons but can't afford them or would rather do a trade. They're usually housewives who have a little extra time on their hands. That's just from my experience. You seriously don't want to work in that environment though. Dancers and their parents are crazy insecure assholes for the most part. The teachers are hateful bitches who enjoy controlling young girls and pushing them to have eating disorders. What studio was it might I ask? Let me tell you, whether it's a studio catering to children or adults you would be in for the most histrionic irritating pretentious people you ever met. You're lucky you didn't get that job! I should know- I spent almost 20 years of my life in that world and at multiple studios. They're all the same.

Actually, I was reticent to interview there for that reason. I was forced into dance lessons at a young age and took them throu early high school. I hated them, but assumed it was because I was so uncomfortable with my body and forced to display it in front of strangers.

But this was a samba style studio for adults, so I didn't forsee any of the problems I had as a kid. Of course, there are always more problems I didn't forsee...

I think you would've been GREAT at that job too! JERKS!!!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm a damn good receptionist. It's people work!
But man...those shoes are really, really ugly.

Grrr. That kind of attitude on their part is fucked, and potentially illegal, I would think. Your job developer should be doing better for you. Grrr.

Yeah well, I just told her the same thing. We'll see what happens.

[identity profile] hollie-horror.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit like that REALLY pisses me off.

If I lived in your area you'd have to stop me from punching that person in the damn face.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's infuriating because it's subtle. Even H was like "are you sure that's what she was getting at?" And I'm like "Bitch, please."

But you can never prove it.
What I don't understand is that if that's what they want, why don't they advertise for a dancer or model-type. That is legal, at least.

My older brother has been over-weight all his life and people dont usually say anything but if they do I want to rip their damn heads off. Him and I have always been real over-protective of eachother. Whenever I see/hear someone pick on someone else because they're fat I'm always tempted to, or I do, step in and at least say something.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I was taught growing up that I was wrong and ugly and it was my own fault that kids picked on me, so I never fought back, even verbally. Now I'm pretty rabid about not letting fat people, or anyone really, get put down--not even by themself.

But in a job situation, there's always that doubt about whether it's the wieght or something else.

[identity profile] hollie-horror.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it legal for someone to discriminate against someone for being over-weight?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in Michigan, where I am. But it's a question of being able to prove it. There's always some bullshit reason to not give somebody a job. All they have to say is they liked someone else better.

[identity profile] klynnfrost.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I'm sorry. You know I have this tendancy to attempt to put a positive spin on things. I know a lot of times, that's not what people are looking to hear, but sometimes, it's what I need to hear so I say it anyway: If they prejudge you like that, they don't deserve you. But of course, you don't deserve to be treated like that regardless.

I heart you.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still hoping that my own insecurities are making me blow this out of proportion and/or make it seems worse or more definate than it actually was. But man...it sucked.

I heart you as well, of course.
And appreciate your heartiness.

Hi, you don't know me but I saw you comment somewhere or other and wondered if your name had anything to do with the name wednesday since people called me that for years.

Check out www.bigmoves.org just because it's cool!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-04-26 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
My given name is Wednesday, after the chick in the Chaz Addams cartoon (well, technically it was the TV show, but I like to pretend my parents were learned enough to read the New Yorker--no dice though.)

And thanks!
