President Fire Thunder is my new hero.

Don't know how to answer your question. They're both bad.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's an amazing thing.

And yes, beatings are bad no matter the semantics. I just meant literarily.

Ah, I get it. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] klynnfrost and [livejournal.com profile] sleazeanna then. Beat down has more of a connotation to me of being beaten to the point of no return, or at least there's a long way to get back.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably could have made that more clear. ;-/

Nah, I'm just dumb today. : )

I think "beat down" is worse than "beat up."

To me, to get beat up or beaten up doesn't seem to suggest as much that one has lost a fight....I could get in a fight and win, but still be "beat up."

However, if one has been "beat down," it sounds like they got their ass kicked.

[identity profile] klynnfrost.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Plus, I think of being "beat down" as being spiritually. And if you beat someone down spiritually - it takes a TON of persistent negative effort. Plus, people who suffer from spiritual hurts don't always recognize that they need to work at healing where as:

"Beat up" implies physically, which implies healing of a biological nature. Physical injuries are much easier to spot ant treat.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent! Thank you. I agree, but I wanted to know what the consensus is without trying to sway it one way or the other.

[identity profile] sudrin.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, on South Park even if they totally kill Chef off a hundred different ways and they make up next week they can just have some crazy episode where they bring him back. I did love the Darth Chef though.. too funny.. The only thing missing was a "NOOOOOOOO!!"

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Somehow, I don't think Chef will ever be back.

Too bad he didn't die, then he and Miss Choksondik could make love down by the fire...in HELL.

[identity profile] sudrin.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha.. I had forgotten about that character until just now.. Wow.. they really pushed the limits there too.. I miss Towlie. Maybe he will come back now.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet if he does, he'll have no idea what's going on.

;-}

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they did kind of take the high road with Chef. At least with how it relates to Isaac. I mean they still attacked religion, but that's not new. I also feel that they were probably being honest and funny in telling it that way.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That is very true. At the same time, I'm sure Isaac Hayes will not find it nearly as funny as we did.

Also, I have a LOST question. How does Ana Lucia know that the tailie that she mistook for one of "the others" died? As far as she knows, he's just gone.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think because the other guy was discovered and therefore she figured out that she suspected the wrong guy. Maybe the "other" from that group said that she picked the wrong guy? I don't quite remember.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That is true, I think he did tell her...now that you mention it.

See you later.

[identity profile] spiralwitch.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
awwh, thank you remembering me :)

i am secretly addicted to VH1 classic.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's nigh on irresistable.

kinda like you. ;=}

[identity profile] spiralwitch.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
awwh. *smiles*

Have a great vacation!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, thanks. It's really more of an editing/writing retreat for me. I do so love the change in scenery.

On the beat down vs. beaten up question...

[identity profile] aicerno.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Yo foo, I'm gonna lay the beat down on ya!"

Ten minutes later...

"Damn man, I really got beaten up by that fuckah, I'm gonna busta cap in his ass."

It's all in the context.

Re: On the beat down vs. beaten up question...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Goodness! It seems you've given this some thought.

;-)

[identity profile] the-hellcat.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
What happened on LOST? I totally haven't been watching this season...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
It would take me a long-ass time to catch you up for the season.

But Henry Gale is one of "the others."

Try here?

[identity profile] the-hellcat.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Which one is Henry Gale?! I'm going to have to just buy Season 2 when it comes out...

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Do you even know what's in the hatch?

[identity profile] the-hellcat.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of. I mean, I saw the episode when they first went down the hatch, when the computer got jacked up and stuff. I really haven't seen any of it past that...:(

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you're in for some fun.

This season has kicked tons of ass.
But you really should watch everything in order.

[identity profile] gifgal.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
lost: what did you know all along? fill me in! (i dont mind spoilers for this episode :)

and awww girl, sorry you are inflicted with the 'vacation rag' as i was also. always figures doesnt it!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Henry Gale is one of "The Others."

And yeah, that sucks.

Off topic....

[identity profile] eroslane.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Let's just say you were to go visit www.ifilm.com.

Let's just say you search for a trailer mash-up called "Must Love Jaws".

Let's just say......yeah.

Re: Off topic....

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Holy Crap.

That's the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

I say beat down is worse.

Re: vote

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
It certainly sounds more thuggish and immediate.

I can't decide if the phrase "Beat Down" will alienate older readers. Odd though, as I don't normally give a rats ass about such things.

Re: vote

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well...if you want to put it into a story... I would be very careful with using it. It could probably be used if a character is 'saying' it. IE: part of their slang/language. However if it is part of the narroration or descrition I wouldn't use it as it would sound unprofessional.

Re: vote

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have a pretty casual narrative style. I totally admire Christopher Moore, so I'd be okay with sounding hip in the 3rd person. But I don't want it to sound forced or to convey the wrong thing.

Re: vote

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually never heard any of my friends use the term 'beat down' so it might depend on where you come from. Some readers might have no clue what it means. That's all I'm trying to say.

Re: vote

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, that's a totally valid point. I just love discussing the finer, nerdier points of such things.

(cry) I'm not a nerd. (whine)
