Taking a cue from Sweet Marie.

I thought I'd take this opportunity to steal an idea from [livejournal.com profile] princezna and post about a few things that have irked me this week:

--I skipped Group again, and now the facilitator is mad because I tend to skip Group once a month. That's only becuase I don't like it and find it more frustrating than helpful. It's annoying though because I have a tendency to do things for a year to 18 months, and then they just fizzle out of my life. I'd like to not do that this time, but this whole thing is really getting old. I feel like I'll want to quit as soon as I find a job, and a new place to get meds from.

--Tom Monahan is insane. This is old news for those of us in Ann Arbor. I'm sure by now most of us have heard that he plans to build a Catholic town where there will be no porn (I suppose computers will be outlawed), no birth control, and of course, no abortions. What bothers me most about this is twofold. First, the assertion that abstaining from any and all sex not specifically meant to create children somehow equates with "strong moral values" is laughable. Distaining sex is unequivocably NOT the key to morality, and it's offensive to suggest that it is--particularly while you're building a town based on exclusion and intolerance. Second, Jesus never said anything about condoms, abortions, or pornography. He did say a lot about helping those less fortunate, loving your fellow man, and supporting the church. Why then isn't Monahan using all this disposable income to build shelters, fund soup kitchens, or finance programs to help people get back to work and into homes. Ann Arbor has many recources availible to the poor, but housing remains a huge struggle.

--Sex Offender Registration. Obviously, we all revile "sex offenders" and don't want them near our children. Okay, fair enough. But Emailing people to let them know an offender (who has served his time) has moved into your zip code is just dumb. It's one of those meanningless things that gives people a false sense of security. As if anyone whom you didn't recieve an Email about is safe. And then parents who support it say things like Notifying citizens when a sex offender moves into the neighborhood is one more tool our families can use to help keep themselves and their children safe. You know what? there could be bad, dangerous people in any neighborhood, so you should already be doing everything in your power to keep your kids safe. How about watching then instead of checking your damn Email to find out if a sex offender lives half a mile from you. Not to mention, "Sex Offenders" can and do include 20 year old guys who had 16 year old girlfriends, people who got drunk and peed outside, or retarded guys who kissed a girl and her parents went apeshit. And of course, there is the very real possibility that such people will be tormented in innumerable ways by well meanning neighbors who assume all sexual offenders are dangerous, predatory pedophiles. And that they are guilty of the crimes they've been convicted of. As if.

--I'm trying to decide if I want to go see Lez Zepplin tomorrow night at the Magic Bag. I'm leaning toward not going because I hate crowds and there are always 1/4 as many chairs as there are people at that club. I don't know if K and N want to get together tomorrow or not, but once I know I can plan accordingly.

--Getting my sweet new computer is slowing down my What to do About Franklin editing. I have to get back on it tonight so's I dont' fall way behind. I have to do 47 more hours before March ends.

--It appears that Walt is not coming back to LOST anytime soon, except in few and far between cameos. Also, it seems that the very familiar looking William Mapother who plays the creepy and blown-away Ethan Rom is Tom Cruise's cousin. So that must be where the crazy comes from.

I was going to comment on the Sex Offender Registration, but you covered that well. Less swearing then I would have used, so "fuck."

I hear you.

An old boyfreind of mine was recently convicted of a sex crime that he did not commit. Not only is he in solitary in prison trying not to get murdered, but he is forever branded as vile and despicable based on something totally specious.

So yeah, FUCK.

Ha!

That is a fine point. Parents may be falling over eachother to raise their kids in such an environment (not ALL parents, but the crazy-Catholic ones) but that doesn't mean the kids will be down with it. It just means their eventual rebellion will be all the bigger.

And I think we all miss the Noid.

you covered the sex offened well , and the other thing is if the family , CYS(child , youth, family serives) , and or the police settle then they never make the list , or never make the websites anyway so why is it ok to let everyone know bout the ones who served time and not the other ones?

Indeed, it's a pretty useless thing to sign into law. All it really does is placate the ignorant.

Completely agree on the sex offender registration thing. That has irked me for some time now. Just another bogus "we're tough on crime" thing. Urgh.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-03-03 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And it has the potential to do so much damage...

Indeed. And it's just not right. If these people on the sex offender list, even if they were guilty, have served their time and aren't considered a threat to society anymore (that's a whole 'nother kettle of crappies), leave 'em the hell alone. People in this country are so ignorant and vindictive.
