Oh Good!! The curtains are on fire...

In my insane and unreelenting desire to have a nice computer, Ryan and I attempted to install Mac OSX Panther since I am one of the last five mac users on earth still using Jaguar. To make a long story short, I'm typing this on H's computer because he is sleeping and my computer will no longer start up.

I'm fairly sure this is my fault, because I accidentally told it to "look for network" or something like that. So this makes me reasonably confident that Ryan will be able to fix it, or ask someone how to fix it. That little waiting icon just keeps spinning and spinning while I envision everything I've written in the last 2 months being lost forever. Fie!!!

Anyway, I might not be around for a few days. Or at least I'll be around much less often than usual.
Unless of course somebody wants to donate $1500 to my new laptop fund.
I wonder if my renters insurance could cover it??? *ponders*

Of course this would happen during a week when [livejournal.com profile] the_omega_man is actually posting again.
He is one of...well, the only person I've actually kept on my flist even though his journal was deleted.

I already miss:
itunes
solitaire
my manuscripts
my safari bookmarks
nano forums
and I'm sure I'll miss Email once I'm away from a computer for a day.

But on the lighter side, H's computer is fast and has a ginormous screen.

Compare my computer stats to H's, you'll laugh

Me: processor: 130m memory: 128mb hard drive: updated to 20gig OSX 10.2.8

H: processor: 1ghz memory: 640 mb hard drive: I think it's 60 but might be 80 OSX 10.4.3

And of course H has USB2 and firewire while I have a USB1 and a pretty much broken Cd drive.

So yeah...I'll see ya's when I see ya's.

Gee. I run, like, OSX 10.1.2 or something primitive like that. Was reading about Tiger & pondering it. I need more RAM too. 'Sall a fantasy, though.

I think right now if I could get it to work again I'd be glad to run Os9.

Relax and have a homebrew!

Your 'puter and all its files should be okay! If desperate or crazy, get a hold of a copy of Norton Disk Doctor on CD and pop it in, then reinstall Jaguar. I'm sure I've done that network search thing once or twice over the years, and it's definitely an "oh shit whut did I do now" moment.

Please...at this point I'd run OS9 if it meant getting my files back.

But yeah, I'm hoping for Panther.

Thanks!

I'm thinking that's what will end up happening, except that my CD drive is fucked. So they might have to put the HD into another computer, fix it, then put it back.

Hopefully I'll be back to business as usual by the end of the week.

Found your journal through itches

Don't feel bad about the whole Panther thing, I have a friend who's still functioning on Mac OS 8, his computer is pretty old school, don't know how he gets anything done.

LOL the computer situation is slowly working itself out.

That itches is a good kid.
