Andy. Serkis. Is. KONG. !!!.

Okay, so we saw King Kong today. After I complained about stupid, loud, multiple-phone-call-getting theatr patrons, I thought it was pretty good. Lots of cool actiony stuff; and lots of good character stuff. Adrien Brody looked hot Hot HOT. No surprises there. He was also quite moving as the romantic lead.

Good stuff: Kong was sympathetic, scary, and wonderful to look at. Jack Black was a total prick, so that was fun to watch. Actually, everything on the island was great: natives, giant bugs, dinosaurs (although T-Rexi are no longer beleived to be predators), and even the terrain. I would have sworn the orignal Kong had a snake in it, but I guess not because I just watched it recently. Lots of clever nods to the original...and no nods to any other Kong ever.

Problems? Well, yes frankly. There were a few lines from the original Kong that seemed tacked on in relation to the style of dialogue throughout the film. In fact, they stuck out like sore thumbs. And this is just a "me" thing, but Jack Black was such a prick, I wanted to see him consequenced. And he really wasn't, nor did he learn a single damn thing from the experience. Although now that I type this, that may well have been the point.

H got the super-tricked out version of Sin City for his birthday from R and K. So that was cool, and he was delighted with that. He also got a groovy card from Dan and Cathy.

Kassy came by and brought me some cool stuff including the "new" Fiona Apple album, and some Janis Joplin for me to upload. Plus for my (belated but still joyous) birthday she and D gave me the first two seasons of Tales from the Crypt. Damn, I love that show. There are seven whole seasons, too. I can't wait to own all of them.

King Kong does battle a snake-like critter in the 1933 version. It's a few minutes after the T-rex fight sequence. A few minutes after the 'snake-like' creature, Kong fights a Pterodactyl. Or Pterodon. Your call. I say 'snake-like' because though at first glance it appears to be a giant snake, you'll notice it has this short little legs. Kinda like a dachsund but with a longer neck. Maybe it's supposed to be a dragon of sorts. I'm sure there's a bona-fide dinosaur that Willis O'Brien modeled the creature after. I just don't know what it is.

Now in the 1976 remake, King Kong battles a huge boa constrictor/python/anaconda. In other words, an actual giant snake.

You know, I didn't get you anything for your B-day...maybe TFTC Season 3?

Okay then, that makes a lot of sense. Since there were no actual prehistoric snakes, I assume that the snake-like creature is a lizard in the process of evolving into a modern snake.

It's not out yet. And you should by no means feel obligated to buy me anything.

However, I do have an amazon wish list which you may access from my main journal page.

The snakey thing shows up in the '33 version, after Kong takes Faye to his cave hideaway. He sets her down on something, then wanders off for some reason (to get the Kongdoms?) and the snakey critter appears from behind some rocks. Kong dispatches it, then picks up Faye to head outside for a clothes-plucking and finger-sniffing session.

In other news, I think the jury is still out on the eating habits of the T-Rex...I was at the Museum of Natural History in May, and listened to lectures on what is revealed by the footprints of various ancient critters. In short, there's evidence both ways. But T-Rex probably could not jump, which should put "paid" to all those Urban Legends...

In other other news, I was going to mail you the rest of ALL ABOUT GEORGE and misplaced your address. Could you post it in my LJ and I'll delete it ASAP? Probably best not to post it in my latest entry, which seems to be getting a bunch of comments... Oh, I'm including an additional set of both disks for your friend.

Oh man, you are too awesome for words!!

And I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] skryche will be delighted!

Making the envelope right now...

It's my pleasure.

And, in the meantime, one of the folks who regularly gets my compilation-DVDs finally got around to watching ALL ABOUT GEORGE and loves it, rather belatedly (I stopped putting it on my compilations because nobody, apparently, was actually watching it!) so I made her a copy at the same time as yours and Skryche's, and will mail hers tomorrow, as well.

It's weird, I get all this great TV stuff and a very selective few actually want to see any of it...

Oh, and by the way...

Didja see my post today? I'm still amused by the cruel sense of humor in that 110-year-old art print...

If more people had taste, primetime network TV would be much better. But alas, it still pays to pander to the drooling masses while the rest of us read books or go online while we wait for something better to be on.

and then eventually, it comes on.

I did indeed.

It was both amusing and impressive.
But I didn't really have any comment to add.
