Thinking Out Loud About Writing Things Down:

I've been up all night reading my novel Tiamata (formerly titled A Stabbing for Sadie) and you know what I realized?

It's really, really fucking good.

What I think I need to do is write a better query letter and figure out how to get people interested. I don't seem to be making it out of the slush pile yet. I'm also wondering if perhaps I shouldn't try to have the whole thing published in chapters in a magazine or something. Each chapter is fairly short and could potentially stand alone in many ways. I remember as a kid, I read Bonfire of the Vanities that was in Rolling Stone. Too bad Kurt Loder isn't there anymore, that guy is fucking cool.

I haven't been making much headway in my "new" novel about the woman who turns into a cat to smite her enemies. That is mostly because I based the cat on Clarence and am still not at a point where I can carry on with that comfortably. If my new cat ever gets here, I imagine that will help. My short story writing has also stopped in its tracks, hopefully NaNoWriMo will help me get my ass in gear again.

Happily, I've been invited to see Corpse Bride tomorrow with R and K. I love those crazy kids. I bet R will get popcorn and K will tell a fun story about some famous person she met at school. Plus--hello? Harry Potter trailer!! Can you even beleive that movie is coming out in November? And if that isn't cool enough, new Simpsons et al tomorrow night. Peter Griffin, aparently, is getting a job in a brewery...with sexy results...

no no...
no more funny stories about who i met at school that day, i'm all gradumatated from dat' der' higher learnin'!

but i can tell you stories of scrapbooking old ladies.

or... i saw brodie yesterday, does he count as a famous person?

Brodie is indeed, locally famous. I mean, he's no no face but he is indeed a well-known A2 icon. I tend to see his car more than I see him.

I think you should abandon your new novel and start something else. I think you are just going to spend a lot of time spinning your wheels on it looking for new inspiration. Sadly, I think that inspiration is gone. Maybe later it will return, but until then I think you should focus somewhere else.

I've been thinking that too. I have a few more ideas I can work on for NaNo. I've been wanting to make H into a vigilante style superhero named Black Onyx. He'll, of course, have an elite cadre of buddies who will all be equally dysfuntional and amazing.

Or else i could always go back to writing zombies, which I've been doing for years without actually finishing anything.

Thanks for the input. It's always nice to know someone besides me gives a care what I'm working on.

Well, I think the axiom of "Write what you know" is best. Plus, you seem well suited to write a great Zombie story.. Why haven't you finished any of them?

Oh, any number of reasons mostly having to do with having no faith in my own talent. But you know, last years NaNo went a long way toward changing that.
