Dammit, I'm old.

Maybe one of you kids can help me with this:

Who the hell is Coldplay and why the hell should I care?

Now I'm off to shake my fist at those damn kids on my lawn.

"Coldplay is a post-Britpop/alternative rock band from London, United Kingdom well known for their rock melodies and introspective lyrics."

Apparently they refuse to sell out for multi-million dollar deals. Therefore they are idiots. Man, I can't wait until I'm famous so I can sell out.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
They sound highly typical and redundant. Have they made any songs I would recognize? Like, a song from a movie or somthing...

There used to be this band called Pearl Jam. They were heroes for not selling out, not making videos, and going to war with Tickermaster. Then I think they fell off the edge of the world or something.

I have no idea, I don't listen to the group. I had to go search for information and treasure. I only found information.

Pearl Jam's still around to some degree. They played at the big Rock the Vote concerts that Springsteen put together last year. A friend of mine sent me video of their set (it was simulcast on some cable network). Good stuff.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure musically Pearl Jam is as good as ever. I've always loved thier music and especially the lyrics. But if you don't play "the game" you sort of fall off the map.

True.

[identity profile] anathon.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
Coldplay is radiohead's replacement. And I personally see no reason to care. I sure don't.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
*wipes brow*

Whew.

Thanks, sometimes I feel totally out of the loop.

Like, you ever turn on Saturday Night Live and find that you don't recognize half the cast, the guest star OR the musical guest? It's a tad depressing.

[identity profile] thewordoffred.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of Coldplay stuff sounds like the same song. However, I really like that song.

CHOCOLATE gets played on the radio a lot.

I tend to look for newer music anyway. Not much of an oldies fan. I have a lot of friends who love 80s stuff, but I put up with that crap for ten years and that was enough for me.

However, I've been havng myself a Zeppelin and Swing Band weekend. I'll post about it later. Honest.

Hope you are well and glad the zombie infestation has subsided. For now.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

I remain, of course, constantly vigilant awaiting the zombie holocaust. Sadly, my new apartment also has easy-entry patio doors.

I saw Skeleton Key tonight.

Also put brick dust along doors and windows. Just In Case.

Being a witch, that's already taken care of.

Sorryy. I screwed up. CHOCOLATE is by Snow Patrol. I like them too. They sound a lot like (surprise!) Coldplay.

Who sounds like radiohead. Sillyness I say.

[identity profile] lostsatellite.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
I imagine you've heard at least part of some of their songs sometime over the past four years or so...with how ubiquitous their music tends to be, I think it would be hard for you to have avoided them altogether...

their first major hit was the song "Yellow"...from their second album was songs like "Clocks" and "The Scientist"...and as their current album was being released, the song "Speed of Sound" was very much overplayed...especially during the brief times that VH1 and MTV actually play videos...

also, the lead singer, Chris Martin, is married to Gwyneth Paltrow...and the child they have together is named Apple...

and you should only care if you think you might like their music...otherwise, concentrate on what you do care about...

In my opinion: Coldplay is a band (on a major label-so how the hell didn't they sell out?) that wishes terribly it was U2, but U2 after they went down the toilet. Lots of pretension and hype. Very little going on. You're not missing anything.

[identity profile] porcelain72.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like them. Most of their music is rather depressing, and Chris Martin always sounds like he's about to burst into tears when he sings. I like that kind of music, even when I'm in a good mood.

just another comment on Coldplay

[identity profile] sugarytea.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see what the hype over Coldplay is all about. There are so many other bands today that are overlooked and are so much better, but... then again, that's always how that goes. I've liked a few of their songs over the past few years (I'm sure you've probably heard one or two, as it's hard not to) but not enough to go and get the albums. A former co-worker copied me their 1st two albums and I maybe listened to them twice. The songs just all sound too similar to me... the last single, "Speed of Sound" was on the radio so much and I don't even listen to commercial radio that often! I always wonder what makes one British band make it 'big' in the US and not another.

I don't even know if I've heard one of htier songs, but it seems like I must have since they are kind of everywhere. This woman I know in her 50's just bought one of thier albums.

[identity profile] noverflow.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Coldplay sucks and you should not care!
Here is a link to their most well known song. Requires iTunes.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

That confirms all my suspicions.
I could see one or two songs like that getting in a persons head if you hear them enough. But it's derrivative and unremarkable in the end.

[identity profile] hollie-horror.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I dont know?

[identity profile] gifgal.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
welp, i am daring to be different and say that coldplay fucking rocks. in fact, i just saw them in concert last night (saturday).

other than that, like that you like, dont like what you dont-to each his own :) just dont knock it :P

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well my dear, you are rather younger and more mainstream than most of the people on my list. So it stands to reason that you'd be more "into" a band such as Coldplay. No worries.

[identity profile] sudrin.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha.. Wow.. I thought Dan was only joking when he made HIS coldplay remark.. Are you joking too?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
No I was quite serious. I hear about Coldplay all the time but have no clue what they sing or where I would know it from. But now I have a better idea, and I think I think they suck.

[identity profile] sudrin.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha.. Well, I like them. But I respect our thinking that you think they suck. :-)

[identity profile] cmdavi-70.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I consider their music palatable for quasi-alternative, mainstream rock (If this sounds slightly oxymoronish, it's intentional). I have no desire to see them live, and I own none of their music, but I won't necessarily turn the dial when I hear them. It's better than average songwriting, and in a pop landscape dominated by the likes of Britney Spears and Fifty Cent (to use two different examples), that counts for something.

You must have heard the song "Clocks" from a couple years back. It has a repetitive piano line that I couldn't put down at first--that is, until it got horribly overplayed--and I rarely even listen to commercial radio. Blasted! It's in my head now! I defy you to download it off of Itunes and ssay you've never heard it. Everyone has, whether they realize it or not.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured I must have heard it. I watch Smallville, so I hear tons of crap.

[identity profile] vjsmom.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I am also old. I have heard of Coldplay, but I could not pick them out of a lineup, as they say. I know what you mean about Sat Nite Live. That started happening to me a coupla years ago. Right about the same time I started developing all sorts of new and interesting physical problems. And having what many might term a "mid-life crisis." But I guess I'd rather be getting old than be dead.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I suppose you've got me there.

Besides that, being of the older generation allows me to get pretty much every joke on The Simpsons...plenty of young kids don't get those.
