Okay, now that I've finished reading, you may spoil away!!!

Dear Richest Woman in England (JK Rowling)

Greetings! I have just finished reading your novel Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince a few scant minutes ago. I have but one thing I wish to say to you:

FUCK YOU AND THE HORSE YOU RODE IN ON!!!

Also, there were many typos. If I'd paid $42, I'd be even more pissed than I am right now.

Sincerely,

[livejournal.com profile] wednes

And now I guess I'm going to get some sleep before Shark Week Myth Busters replays.

EDIT: Comments contain mild spoilers.

Soooo...you didn't like it?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to be spoilery yet. But there were a lot of things that shouldn't have happened; and unless they fix it, a rather large mistake.

Certainly, there were some great scenes and a lot of terror and polot development, character arcs and all that there. But the Spider-Man moment at the end was not great either.

[identity profile] squamous.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
what was the large mistake?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
The reason Dumbledore told Harry that he trusted Snape was not true. Snape didn't send Voldemort after James and Lily because he was not thier secret keeper. Only Wormtail could have revealed that secret. Plus which, if Snape and Worntail were in cahoots, he surely would have ratted Snape out (pun intended) at the end of Book 3 to save himself.

I have decided though, that Dumbledore may well have faked his own death. If not, I'm tempted to find Snape and kill him myself. But I do stand by my original synopsis, which is that Dumbledore is not foolish enough to be hookwinked by Snape. Plus Rowling has said that Book 6-7 are really one long story...so we shall know in 2007 I guess.

dumbledore had just been offering to help malfoy fake his own death to hide from voldemort, seems a bit fishy.

i think that snape could have given voldemort the info that he heard through the keyhole, and may have even guessed that it was the potters. then voldemort could have gotten their whereabouts from wormtail. i do, however, agree with you that he didn't, i just see that it's possible that he COULD have.

i just this minute finished the book am so mad at rowling. i hereby back up your screams of "...and the horse you rode in on". and her punkass needs to not make me wait two years this time. *grump*

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though the end is already written, I can't imagine we'll have the next book in less than 2 years.

It does seem though, that Slughorn was faking his death when D and H went to his place. The O of the P does fake deaths as well.

I guess my biggest problem really is that I read HP books to feel good and like a kid again. This book didn't really allow me to do that. Everything just sucked. I swear I want to wear a black armband for Dumbledore.

[identity profile] rivetkitten.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I just finished the book, and I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments (up to and including the armband for Dumbledore). Though I know D probably didn't die, really, even if he did, there's still his portrait in the Headmaster's office.

The part that actually had me yelling at the book, though, was Dumbledore trying to convince Malfoy to "come to the right side..."

Rowling has been writing long enough that her dialogue should be somewhat better than George Lucas's.... which SUCKS.

Ha!

True dat.

Dumbledore told Harry that Snape felt remorse about how Voldemort had interpreted the prophecy ("I believe it to be the greatest regret of his life, and the reason he returned."), but when Harry asks how he can be sure Snape is on their side, Dumbledore merely replies, "I am sure. I trust Severus Snape completely."

The key here is that Dumbledore never actually told Harry why he trusts Snape. However, after Dumbledore dies, Harry tells everyone in the infirmary that Snapes remorse was why Dumbledore trusted him. This is Harry's conclusion, but not necessarily Dumbledore's reason.

Snape overheard the first part of the prophecy and reported it to Voldemort. As Dumbledore pointed out, Snape had no way of knowing how Voldemort would interpret the prophecy.

Once Voldemort had heard (part of) the prophecy, he was determined to kill the child that might one day have the power to destory him. Because of their birthdays, Voldemort could have chosen to kill Neville or Harry (or both), as either of them could have been the child referred to in the prophecy. He was able to find the Potters thanks to Wormtail, who (given the nature of Voldemort's organization) was very likely unaware that Snape had delivered the prophecy, or even that Snape was a Death Eater.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't see the mistake to which you refer.

On a personal note, I think that Dumbledore is most likely quite dead. I also believe, as bizarre as it may seem, that his real reason for trusting Snape has yet to be revealed, that Snape is actually on "the right side," and that he will be key in bringing about the ultimate destruction of Voldemort.

...after Dumbledore dies, Harry tells everyone in the infirmary that Snapes remorse was why Dumbledore trusted him. This is Harry's conclusion, but not necessarily Dumbledore's reason.

Actually, after thinking about this I have come to the same conclusion. Initially, I thought it was strange how Minerva and others seemed to take Harry's explanation at face value. But really, everyone is probably too devastated to discuss every little detail with Albus gone.

You may well be right about Albus and Severus...I'm just so horribly depressed about the way Dumbledore went out. Even if Severus isn't actually a Death Eater in spirit that is still just heart wrenching. I guess the problem is, now that we've watched Snape murder Dumbledore, why should we beleive anything he says after that? Although I suppose Harry will have access to the pensieve in the next book. At this point, it doesn't appear that anyone except perhaps Minerva knows why Albus trusts Snape.

[identity profile] kjtoo.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I don't Dumbledore necessarily told McGonagall his reasons for trusting Snape. I get the feeling it's something he and Snape knew.

I also suspect that the pleading tone in Dumbledore's voice when Snape arrives doesn't mean what we're meant to believe it means.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought that too about the pleading. I can't imagine Dumbledore would ever plead for his life. He certainly didn't when Draco had the drop on him.

[identity profile] locakitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
hehehehe

I think this is the arc of the whole thing...all loose ends should be tied up very nicely in the last book :)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I have no doubt that Book 7 will be extremely satisfying, even if we lose more people we love.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
She's richer than the Queen?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my, yes.

Order of the Phoenix pushed her over!

[identity profile] hortonhearsawho.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So you got a copy with Harry's breath causing "fug," too?

I just finished it a few minutes ago, and I tend to agree with your finer points.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed I did.

I'm not sure it's all as final as it appears, but it is very obvious that there will only be one more book. I mean, we knew that but even if we didn't it would be clear now.

There was plenty to like, added back story and whole new feelings for people I never planned to empathize with. But I didn't like certain people getting pushed into the background either...like Hagrid.

[identity profile] locakitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
you know...i sat there for five minutes debating looking up the word "fug" and wondering if it was indeed some weirdo british thing or what. Then I got distracted by something shiny and then I went back to reading. :)

So, now that you reminded me, I went to go look it up.

fug

n : (British informal) an airless smoky smelly atmosphere

Which leads me to believe...it's a typo :)

I was really disappointed that there wasn't more of Neville. As for Snape, I think there must be more going on there than it seems. Dumbledore is no dummy, and he said he trusted Snape completely. I think Harry jumped to the conclusion that Dumbledore trusted Snape for the reason Harry said, but I think there must be some other reason that Harry doesn't know about. I guess we will see in a couple of years

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree.

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
When you make THAT MUCH money on the first hour of release you don't tend to care much on the content.

I had someone at my signing yesterday that asked me how I was feeling about my competition. Competition? He said...well yeah..Harry Potter. (cough) Ok, so now I had to wonder if Harry was old enough to have explicet sex scenes throughout his adventures and run off with his favorite fuck buddy.

This world is just sick and I feel more and more 'normal'.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Methinks the expolicit sex won't come until the various porn sequels:

Harry Potter and the Harem of Muggles.

The Girls of Hogwarts Ride the Nimbus.

Patil Sisters Gone Wild!!!

Filch meets The Veela.

Hermione's Adventrues Thru the Mirror of Erised (it probably gets hung on the ceiling).

and of course, anything produced by Playwitch magazine!

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
ROFL :)

[identity profile] pleasing-tint.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hooray! Let the backlash begin! Burn your books and celebrate your newfound freedom. Fuck JK Rowling, read JG Ballard!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I must admit, I'm very torn. But I'm reserving final judgement until I get the last book in '07.

[identity profile] pleasing-tint.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
But this is your chance to be the first on your block to turn your and not look back. Seize it and revel in your good fortune!

In 2007 you'll be with 'us' and wondering about 'them'.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah...

I can only give up so many vices in one year.
