Books and other media...

As I've mentioned before, I'm quite taken by the work of Christopher Moore. I just finished his debut novel, Practical Demonkeeping, last night. It was an incredible read. I've also read Stupidest Angel and Lamb. Great Stuff. I truly wish I had a similar talent for words and plotting.

Now I'm told that this weekend has been decreed "Buy Yourself a Book Weekend". This is as per [livejournal.com profile] thewordoffred who is a most fascinating cat. The point is that whether you go to a bookstore, buy it online, from a library or garage sale, that you all take the time to hook yourself up with a new bit of literature this coming weekend. And of course, buy another books for [livejournal.com profile] klynnfrost as it is her birthday this weekend.

Myself, I'm finally going to dive into DaVinci Code which seems to be for adults what Harry Potter is for kids. People appear to want to beleive it very much, which I suppose is why the movie is set to star American Everyman, Tom Hanks. I have nothing against Hanks (or Otm Shank for you Simpsons fans) but I do tire of the whole "Blockbuster movie" thing. He doesn't ever do small, indy films or films with limited appeal. it's always the biggest, most family oriented film around...and I think in my mind that diminishes him from actor to movie star. I guess there's plenty of people who would want to be a movie star, but they aren't to be taken as seriously as "real actors".

While I have you all here, I thought I'd bring up a peeve of mine regarding Simpsons and Simpsons comm's on LJ. Normally when I am outraged by someone;'s stupidity on LJ, it turns out that they are some dumbass teenager--but not always. Anyway, I realize not everyone loves Simpsons as much as I, but what's the point of joining a comm like [livejournal.com profile] simpsons_obsess to say things like "the show hasn't been good in years" or "I'm sure the Simps movie will suck because the current writers also suck"?!? If you think it has sucked for years, why the fuck are you watching it? Sure, we all have the odd critique here and there. But clearly YOU suck if you think it's clever to watch things you hate so you can bitch about how much you hate them...or is this some kind of dreary teen angsty thing I can wrap my grown-up brain around.

Sure punks, I'm sure the longest running sitcom in the history of television sucks and is terrible. I'm sure the buffy/simps slash fanscript you and your coven wrote over spring break is much better. Ass.

Whoa! Easy, sister. Simpsons fans are usually very sensitive, aren't they? Take it easy.

I bought a book this week...does that count? It's this...

I think I'll enjoy that immensely.

I don't know that you can make any sweepingt generalizations about Simpsons fans. There's an awful lot of us.

As for the book, it looks like a fabulous read. I'm even slightly jealous, as I'm sure I'd love to give that a perusal.

But it IS appropriate given that so much humour in the Simpsons comes from sterotypes which are sweeping generalizations...

Ah, touche!

I'm the same way about the raging SW fans who see one of the new ones 10 times and do nothing but bitch about it. You don't have to pay the money to see it that many times, so shut the hell up.

Ha ha, you get as touchy about the Simpsons as I do over SW fans. You're a nerd :p

Just to be counted correctly:

I love the Simpsons and there is nothing wrong with the current writing staff.

I didn't really care but N lent you the Christopher moore books before I had a chance to read them...so if you are going to put off reading Bloodsucking fiends, then can I get it and Practical demonkeeping back for a few weeks? If you are going to read it, that's fine too. I have stuff to keep busy with.

Sure, I'll give them to you on Saturday when you come by here.

Demonkeeping was a wonderful read.

Trek fans do the same... It's sad, really.

Da Vinci Code is worth it in every way. And I never thought of it compared to Harry Potter like that before. Too true. I like the ideas, and the way they've opened up the question of the role of the feminine in Christianity, but I think that going on to believe in the book is missing the point. Kinda like the Morgan Llywelyn Celtic books. Great retellings, but she's writing fiction and has to bend facts and invent things in the service of the story.

I'm hoping I'll like it. I'm sure I'll post all about it soon!
