Electrical Woes

I think there is something very wrong with the eletricity in our apartment. In the living room and our bedroom, electrical appliances have just stopped working for no real reason. In the year and a half we've lived here, we've lost 3 CD players, a receiver, a battery charger, a drill and 3 lamps. I suppose some of that just happens with the passage of time. But our lamps and CD players made it through our last crappy apartment just fine. I went to unplug a lamp today, and the socket pulled right out of the wall. There are also several sockets where the plug will just fall out it is so loose. I don't want to sound like a nervous nellie, but we have pets and no renters insurance. This just feels like a horrible fire (or worse, an animal injury) waiting to happen. Especially since the amount of dust and animal hair around here borders on the disgusting.

So I'm not really sure what steps to take to do something about it. As usual, H doesn't see it as a big problem. H doesn't really see anything as a big problem, come to think of it. Of course if he were to acknowledge that something was a problem he might actually have to do something about it.
In other H related complaints, he changed his mind about seeing Be Cool (which I totally wanted to see, if only because The Rock looks so H-like in it) at the mall, so now I have no one to see it with. And since he doesn't see any 3D animation movies, so I have no one to see Robots with either. I dont' understand not seeing all those great 3D animation movies. Of course, he hasn't seen Willy
Wonka and the Chocolate Factory either, so go figure. Even if I have to kidnap him, we will certainly be seeing THIS, especailly given my love of both sharks and members of the Cousteau clan. Wacky French oceanographers!

Speaking of electricity, did you know that you actually CAN be killed or shocked from using a land-line phone during a thunderstorm? True dat. I thought that was true as a kid...but as I grew up, I slowly decided that it must be a lie. Funny how that works.

On a completely unrelated topic, I found a truly hilarious article about weed today at the NORML site. It's Canada's fault Americans like Pot!! I bring this up to make sure everyone knows that I still strongly support legalizing weed; as well as supporting the rights of adults to do what they want with their own bodies in thier own homes.

And finally, I know this has been out for a few days already; but i'm told that some interested parties have not yet seen the cover art for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

See ya, punks!

Wow.. Lamps too? A lamp is pretty simple electrically. In my whole LIFE I've never had a lamp "Go bad". I would say it sounds like there is at least some kind of problem. Usually refrigerators are the most succeptable to bad power. But when you have sockets falling out of walls, why don't you contact the landlord or maintenance? I mean that's just not right. As for renters insurance, I don't want to sound too.. parental.. but its usually a really good deal considering the protection you get.

Actually, the socket just came out of the wall today. so I will surely be calling maintenance. the problem is if I call them, I have to stay home and awake all day because of the dog. They won't come in when the dog is here unless there is a person to control her.

It seems like it is power surges because it looks like a burnt out bulb, but when you put in a good bulb, nothing happens.

Well, I tend to agree with you about there being a problem especially if something like a LAMP is blowing up. I would certainly discuss it with the maintenance person. Unless they are just totally against caring I imagine it should raise an eyebrow.

One day I'm going to do a little bit of crappy research and write an opinionated discussion on the legalisation of marijuana, drawing references on prohibition alcohol and tobacco smoking.

One day.

Or you could just cut and paste someone else's from NORML's site.

You guys should really check into renters insurance....it's usually cheaper than you think.....call a few companies and get quotes.....if the worst did happen and your place did burn down, how much would you need to replace your most important stuff? That figure is how much renters ins you need. good luck!

We're going to, but we're losing a roomate in 5 months, plus I have no income. So it will have to wait a bit.

Thanks!

thanks mom.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but it's not something we've done. Simple as that.

Why deal with a problem within our own borders when we can just push the blame onto canada.

I blame canada for liking alex trebeck and kids in the hall too.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that Trebeck is a good one!

[identity profile] anathon.livejournal.com 2005-03-14 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
It is just sad that this is becoming an all to common occurrence. The just pushing the blame beyond our borders, I mean.

Of course trebeck is not a problem.

It's just so absurd to suggest that Canada is the cause of anything in the US...you just don't hear people talking about the latest fabulous trend from Canada.

I just wish we'd go back to blaming Mexico, or Cuba perhaps.
;-)

The problem is that the people involved in the war on drugs have never taken an economics class. As long as there is a demand for something, there will be a supply. That's how a free market works. And the drug trade is the lease regulated market in the country. So the war on drugs focuses on cutting the supply, this only raises the demand perpetuating the war on drugs. Well... I guess they have taken an economics class.
