Um, not to be rude or anything , but who the hell are the Red Socks and why the hell should I care???

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
they are a baseball team

they are one of the original baseball teams

they've sucked since they gave some ball player named, "Ruth" to the Yankees.

they're kicking ass in the world series right now

Now I'm not a big sports dude and no part of me thinks you should've known all of that, but with your vast trivia knowledge, I'm surprised you didn't. Because, at the very least, I'd think you'd know they were a baseball team.

[identity profile] deathscythe81.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
um...I didn't. oops. At least I know now.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I did actually know they were a baseball team. But I thought Babe Ruth always played for the Yankees.

Plus, that candy bar was not named after him.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Plus, that candy bar was not named after him."

Just like The wizard of OZ is just a childrens story and nothing else, like 8 Mile isn't biographical.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No actually, it's nothing like either of those things.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Then what is it named after?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The candy makers daughter, Ruth.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So it's just a coincidence?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I learned it on Unwrapped

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured you really did know and were playing dumb to look cute.

Babe Ruth did play for the Red Sox, but they traded him to the Yankees where I understand he had a pretty good career. If I understand it correctly, the Red Sox haven't won the World Series since they gave Babe away in 1918. It was the "Curse of the Bambino."

Ok, I'm all done talking sports for a while.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you saying I'm cute?

[identity profile] derekfz.livejournal.com 2004-10-31 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
If he's not, I will!

[identity profile] deathscythe81.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they are some kind of a sports team...maybe football or some other fall sport. And no, you don't need to care.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay then.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's another interesting statistic:

I'm not one for omens, but every time the Red Sox have won a World Series in the year of a Presidential Election, the incumbent has been defeated.

Don't believe me? Check out this list:

Year Red Sox won
World Series            President          President Re-elected?
1912                    William H Taft     No

[identity profile] gusterize.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a pretty impressive statistic there.

[identity profile] anathon.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
We will see if this trend continues. Interesting stat.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
One occurrence does not make a pattern. It makes a coincidence. Even two isn't anything special. Plenty of presidents lost re-election w/o the red socks winning the series.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, genius.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's why it's funny.

But it's only funny if you get it.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So it's only cute when you play dumb?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because I'm not adversarial about it.

Plus I identify my jokes thru the use of direct sarcasm and/or emoticons.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So would this be OK. ;-P

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's fine.

Predictable, but fine.

[identity profile] klynnfrost.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Further more, some guy said last year, "Kerry will become president when the red sox win the world series."

[identity profile] raggedrose.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
What you said!!!

I'm happy they got their win, because it made people happy, but I'm really about as interested in this as I was in all the "I hate my period" posts that were going around.

But hey, it's lj, and a slice 'o life is not always interesting to all.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought The Red Socks were invading Brits and was even more convinced when I saw some naked lady carrying RevereWare and shouting "The Red Socks are coming!" "The The Red Socks are Coming!"

Oh, maybe I was mistaken.
