"Cover me!" (with blankets)

Took 2 bags of movies and books to the shelter tonight. It was kind of cool, because I took everything to the 4th (women's) floor, where they were watching Bedazzled, which I brought last time. They ladies were delighted at the books and immediately started going thru them. I was able to fill several specific book requests, such as LotR's and "religious (read: Christian) books". Then I stopped by the 3rd (men's) floor, where they were watching Lost in Space, also brought by me. I then went to my regular working floor, which is the second floor (for people who are on the waiting list for a bed), and everyone was watching my old copy of Gladiator. Those poor twins have been there for 3 weeks running--still waiting for a bed. Well, two beds, presumably.

I found out tonight that the shelter is desperately in need of blankets. I'm trying to think of cool ways to do a huge blanket drive. I wonder if I could approach teachers and have some kind of thing where schoolkids all bring in 50 cents to buy a balnket to donate. I wonder if going door to door would help. When I lived at the Heathen Ranch, I used to do calls for Purple Heart, where you ask people to set out a bag of donatables and a truck would come around and pick them up. Maybe something like that could be organized. It just seems like most people have some kind of old blanket, quilt or hand me down afgan in some god-awful color they could donate. Being cold sucks.

The guy I work with on midnights is pretty cool. He's a Simpsons fan with good taste in movies and books. Sadly, he got a promotion so i won't be able to work with him any more after next week. He bought me a sub from Jimmy Johns tonight. It was a #16, and as such, was delicious. Here's the thing, his job (midnight supervisor guy) is now availible and he thinks I should go for it. So guess what? I am!!!
I also applied at Borders and am still waiting to hear from PAX TV's radio station who is looking for someone to do monkey work. I'm also waiting to hear from SAFE house for an admin assistant type of deal. It's odd to me that my first night at the shelter was so terrible; but now I really think I would love working there. The staff is awesome and you're always meeting new people. And you know what? The odds of meeting annoying, overprivilaged, pompous, snobs is pretty much nil! Indeed, it would have its depresssing side and would be very trying at times, but it is the sort of gig I could feel really good about, kind of like when I was bringing indie cinema to the masses.

Trust Metric

My trust level is: 105%

Now go you to your homes--and return with blankets for the homeless!!!
Seriously, do get in touch with me if you have comfy blankets to donate, or want to help with a blanket drive.

In other news, this guy on History channel who is the announcer for that show, The Most just asserted that Adolf Hitler is one of the most interesting/intriguing people in history. I'm afraid I just don't see it. After all, deluded violent lunatics are kind of interesting, but a dime a dozen. While Hitler's intense rascism just makes him seem mundane and boring. Don't like people who are different than you? Whatever, dumbass.

i think what youre doing is awesome.
:)
also: you dont want to work for borders.
they will totally fuck you over the first
chance they get. (it makes me really sad
to say that cause i loved borders b4 i
worked for them).

Thank you. Know though, that I have selfish motives. Helping people is really helping my chronic depression, and it's cheaper than smoking extra pot.

I didn't know this about Borders. Can you be more specific? I had always heard they were good to work for, so I'd be interested in hearing the other side.

i was living in lapeer @ the time
& saw an ad for a new borders opening
up in flint (about 20 min away from
lapeer). they were conducting the
interviews @ the rochester hills store
location (about an HOUR away from lapeer)

the manager who interviewed me liked me
a lot & wanted to hire me right away for
the rochester location as a PT holiday
temp in the cafe. (this is around halloween)

she said i would be transfered (& hired
full time) to the flint store as soon as
it opened (about a month).

i needed the money so i said ok.
(even tho the pay -minimum wage-
& NO TIPS- really wasnt worth the drive)

from the very first day i worked there,
i worked FULL time even tho i was technically
a part time employee. i didnt know this @ the
time, but my extra working hrs were NOT adding
up to go towards what i needed to qualify for
benefits (i was working full time but because
i was on the books as PT, those hrs didnt count)

when i finally found that out (2 months into
working in rochester - a month after i SHOULD
have been transfered to flint, the manager said
shed see what she could do about fixing it.
(i had no idea she KNEW there wasnt anything
she could do about it)

i find out nothing can be done but she
lays on the praise about how great of
an employee i am & how good of a job
ive done & i suck it up & stay.

another month, another month ... now its APRIL
& im still @ rochester & theyre SWEARING TO GOD
my transfer is coming thru next week (every fucking week).
i need the money so im staying put.

finally, she says shes going to need to
hire someone else to replace me when i
leave but she cant have me & that person
on the payroll so do i want to take a week
off between leaving rochester & going to flint.
i say ok (cause not only have i been working
full time, ive been busting my ass working
OVERTIME - which is not only encouraged
but is encouraged to do OFF THE CLOCK.
i never did that tho).

i go home & a week goes by & she doesnt call.
i call her, she says one more week & the temp
they have in flint will be gone & ill be in.

im REALLY pissed by now.

a week goes by & i find out that yes, the
position is open but i will be considered
a NEW HIRE & all my time @ the other borders
will NOT count towards my benefits. also,
i will not be getting the raise that i was
promised...
BUT
if i want to come back to rochester, i can.
the other person didnt work out.

by now, im losing my fucking mind.

i say ok & go back to rochester,
run up my house account charging
every book i ever wanted, call in
sick several days (till after i get
my last check) & quit with no notice.

after quitting, i start hearing similar
stories from friends who also worked for
borders & got screwed.

personally, i saw management using
the ppl working there as much as
possible & giving as little as possible.

their policy of 'celebrating diversity'
actually meant hiring kids with funny
colored hair or facial piercings & working
them as hard as they could & paying them
as little as they legally could. getting
ppl to punch out & work for free. with as
much waste in the kitchen as there was, they
were still charging FULL prices for food for
employees. (altho pop refills were only ยข25)

it was disgusting.
;(

im sure some ppl who've worked there
had a great time, i just dont know any.
also, i suspect that the AA borders -
since it is the original one - might
be a little nicer.
:)

Wow...

I can't beleive they asked people to work off the clock. If you get injured while working off the clock, their insurance does not have to cover you. Crazy!

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there are philosophies that say there is no such thing as an unselfish act. Ultimately, if you do something you don't want to do, it is for some sort of reward (like not ruining your credit, or helping society). I think the reason most people volunteer is because it makes them feel better, or it's for their community service (but I wouldn't call that volunteering).

[identity profile] inthaclouds.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've got some blankets. Nothing extravagant, probably ugly as hell, but I know I've got a closet full of blankets we don't use.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet!

Do you want to bring them to me or should I come get them? I don't have a car, but can figure something out if need be. I live behind the Colonade shopping center.

[identity profile] inthaclouds.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
off of eisenhauer? I could probably drop them off to you sometime next week. do you have specific times you're home? afternoons around 4ish would be the only time I could swing by.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I could make myself be here any day next week that works for you. Feel free to email me @livejournal.com

[identity profile] inthaclouds.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wednesday will be good for me. I sent out an email here at work for people to bring in stuff too. Hopefully it'll help.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, you need to come over to our place and hang out. Bring Your hubby too.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's awesome!

Thank you so much.

[identity profile] fyreangel.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I lived closer.. I'm sure i could find some. ..Or make some.
michaels does a blanket thing every year. All they ask people to do is knit or crochet a square.. then they get together and sew all the squares together and make blankets :)

Maybe you can teach everyone to knit or crochet ;)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, you know I don't know how to do either. Isn't yarn one of those things you can spend crazy amounts of money on? I make my own beeswax candles sometimes, but once I make one, I want to make a zillion and it costs a fortune.

I really should learn how to knit though...

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I could help you learn how to crochet, and I have a few books on it. Yarn can be expensive if you want cotton or wool, but synthetics are pretty cheap.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Um...so you're saying YOU know how to crochet?

*insert pansy joke here*

But in all seriousness, I'd like to check out what you've got (in regards to crocheting manuals of course!)

[identity profile] fyreangel.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
It can be.. if you go and get super expensive stuff.. But to just keep warm you can pick up big balls for 7 bucks (Well.. 7 bucks here.. probably cheaper there). Our Value Village (Do you guys have that? It's kinda like Goodwill) always have mass amounts of yarn as well.

Don't go knit.. go crochet. it's easier and faster :P

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...I'm going to pursue that I think.

Thanks!

[identity profile] fyreangel.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the info on the Michaels Warm up America thing :
http://www.michaels.com/art/online/projectsheet?pid=20146

Give you an idea for square sizes and stuff.

I'm more than willing to donate some crochet hooks if you like. I have a ton of doubles kicking around.

also.. a reeeeeeally good site for knitting/crocheting is
www.stitchguide.com

they even have lil videos you can watch!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, Sweet!

Thank you so much for the great info!

[identity profile] fyreangel.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yer so welcome!!!
Did you want the hooks? Just e-mail where to send em!
Fyreangel79@rogers.com

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that would be great. I'll do that.

[identity profile] locakitty.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a B&N near you that you could apply at? I used to work for them, they paid pretty well, gave pretty good discounts. Promotions were hard to come by though. Got an extra discount around xmas time (an extra 10% on one day, but still, nice.) Even after I quit I was still getting my discount...because I knew how their system worked :) I stopped after a few months..guilt set in.

As for blankies, maybe you could talk to PAX TV about hosting/sponsoring a drive :)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
There is a huge B&N near us, but for some reason, they are never hiring. Unless of course, they are just never hiring ME.

"As for blankies, maybe you could talk to PAX TV about hosting/sponsoring a drive :)"

That is a fabulous idea, or any of the local radio stations.

[identity profile] locakitty.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
The trick with B&N is to know someone there who will recommend you. That's how I wound up getting my job and everyone we ever hired. They knew someone at the store already. You NEED MORE FRIENDS!! :)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that's kind of the thing I have going on at Borders, but I will look into that.

Thanks!
