Tom Cruise: Actor

We saw Collateral, which is a movie where Tom Cruise plays a non-vampyric villian. Neat, eh? Jamie Foxx plays a guy who can act and Mrs Jiggy Smith or whatever plays a lady with a small part. You know what though? This movie was good. Here are my thoughts:

I figured out what the ending conflict would be very early on in the film. But that is okay, as it is still compelling. Tom Cruise is intense, as is Michael Mann's direction. A lot of extreme close ups and progressively more shaky photography until you start to get that Blair Witch feeling in your stomach. As [livejournal.com profile] uterdic points out, this is to represent how unstable everything is becoming in the story. How avant guarde!

Even though Tom Cruise is amazing, a lot of the stuff he does best is hidden in fast, shaky editing in too short sequences. These are interspersed with long boring parts that could lead to intense character development but never actually go anywhere. Indeed, there were plenty of loose ends, which is okay. It's just that the bulk of the film feels like an action flick...you don't realize until the final scene that its actually a drama. Mind you, I think all of these things happened to give the characters and plot a keen authenticity. And it does. But I have a life already, and I want to be entertained when I see an action movie. Moreover, if I grow to like any of the characters, I feel entitled to a stronger sense of closure than I got here. At the same time, I won't begrudge Michael Mann his vision as it's better than anything I could make, even if I could get Tom Cruise.

We saw it at the Q16, and we got to see Jeremy from Madstone. He was working at the concession stand, which means that's what i'd have had to be doing if I was working there. And man...I hate working concession!

That said, I applied for 2 more jobs today. And [livejournal.com profile] nate101000 made me this super swell new icon which is my default for now. Coupled with the Family Guy icon I snagged and some old ones I brought back, I have a fine collection of 15 cool icons right now. So I guess what i'm saying is...I really need to find more things to fill up my day.

With that in mind, I finish my volunteer training tomorrow night. Then I'll start spending time at the shelter until I find the kind of job where they pay me.

Right.

'avant guarde'

I'm sick of not understanding this. =( What does it mean?!

If you want Michael Mann at his absolute best, it's Heat. It knows when it's an action movie and it knows when it's developing character.

Right you are!
