First of all the only difference between regular people and professional reviewers are the language skills, and the title. And why should I listen to what anyone else thinks anyway. Most regular people I know didn't like 28 days later, but you keep telling me how awesome it was. Fantasia was originally bashed by the reviewers, and not very popular with the regular people. Over the Rainbow was called the greatest movie song of all time. Angelina Jolie won an academy award. The bottom line is... Don't trust critics.
Actually the difference between critics and regular people are that critics have gone to film school and studied film. I think having' a broad, intellectual, scholarly appreciation for film with all its history makes a profound difference in the way one related to movies individually.
Actually, most "regular" people I know loved 28 Days Later. But we are mostly movie nerds, which again, makes a difference.
It's not so much what they know as individuals. The advantage of rottentomatoes is a statistical one. Like baseball stats. No one cares if Joe Schmoe didn't get a hit on an overcast tuesday, until you see that he hasn't hit a ball on an overcast tuesday the last 300 times at bat. That makes a difference over time.
Rottentomatoes is similar. one or two reviews mean nothing. But when you get 50-150 reviews and all the responses tend to be the same, it makes a difference. I think it better reflects the truth about the quality of the movie.
I couldn't care less about that guy's shit. I haven't seen any of his films and the sooner this one whispery trick pony fucks off, the better. The trailers have always reeked and ranked as the highest bullshit, in my opinion. Plus, he used Mel Gibson in a film and that guy is completely fucked. In the not so distant future, we'll have an island prison set up for hack filmmakers and the over-hyped. Quentin will be put to death there. Watch your step!
In good news, Criterion is releasing a 5 DVD box of John Cassavetes films. More art, less shit!
Well, I certainly agree that mel gibson is some kind of crazy man. Until Signs, I had never seen a Mel Gibson movie all the way thru on purpose. No, not even Braveheart which every person i know gasps in horror when i say that.
But I thought Unbreakable was really fantastic. Normally, I like Night's work very much. And people can't really help it if they become popular and get hyped. The film industry is a business who markets and sells art. it's really a horrible concept at best, but you can't always blame the artist for that.
Yeah, well I got carried away there. It's just that I get so pissed at all the hype (and frequently it is the artist's fault because he works in that system and MUST sell tickets to keep working there) and I feel (perhaps wrongly) that there are so many more beautiful pictures to be seen. It was always a point of contention with friends as well as I refused to see 'popular' films they thought were excellent because I wanted to try to find films that I was interested in...you know? Ones I'd read about. Ones I still want to see. You only have so many movie watching hours in your life...why waste them?
When the latest trailer actually included a whispering child clip, I actually laughed out loud because I thought it had to be a parody. Maybe self-parody if the most sincere form of pulling the wool...dunno.
It shouldn't come off sounding insulting, although I know it does, but I don't really care what people like. I tend to wait a week after seeing films to see just how well they (or the characters) have resonated with me. Even crafty and clever films like 'Adaptation' don't hold me nearly as close as Werner Herzog or more 'passionate' filmmakers...sometimes even low budget shit has something so interesting or creative that I'm kept by it. It's the same with music. Anyway, like what you like. Believe me, I like a lot of shit as well.
hmmm...I think I may still decide to see this one in the theater despite the negative reviews...if anything else, it would give me a reason to see Joaquin Phoenix on the screen for about two hours...and I guess I'm more curious about seeing this movie than any of the other ones that happen to be showing in my area...I may turn out to not like it, but maybe I'll like it just fine...

A lot of critics really slated Signs too and I really enjoyed that. So fuck 'em. I'll make me own mind up.
