Sounds like a good theater experience.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
More like a good rental experience.

it's gone down two points since I posted it this morning!

[identity profile] anathon.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not a single one was a good review. It was funny. I had no desire to the movie before but now I am curious to see the "horridness."

Oofah.

[identity profile] flinx.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read that many negative headlines in... well... a long, long, long time.

Daaaaaayumn.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like if anyone does go to see it, it'll have to be a group thing, so everyone can rip it apart over scones afterward.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell do they know?!?!?!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they are not just professional reviewers, many of them are just regular people who saw the film early.

I'm bummed though, and surprised.

[identity profile] the-omega-man.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Worth remembering that these are probably the self same critics who consider The Matrix and to be a masterpiece, though.

A lot of critics really slated Signs too and I really enjoyed that. So fuck 'em. I'll make me own mind up.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all the only difference between regular people and professional reviewers are the language skills, and the title. And why should I listen to what anyone else thinks anyway. Most regular people I know didn't like 28 days later, but you keep telling me how awesome it was. Fantasia was originally bashed by the reviewers, and not very popular with the regular people. Over the Rainbow was called the greatest movie song of all time. Angelina Jolie won an academy award. The bottom line is... Don't trust critics.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually the difference between critics and regular people are that critics have gone to film school and studied film. I think having' a broad, intellectual, scholarly appreciation for film with all its history makes a profound difference in the way one related to movies individually.

Actually, most "regular" people I know loved 28 Days Later. But we are mostly movie nerds, which again, makes a difference.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-07-31 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Movie critics may have gone to film school, but in the end all they are giving is their opinion. Which is no more valid than yours or mine.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-07-31 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all critics soley give their opinion. You're thinking of crappy TV critics.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much what they know as individuals. The advantage of rottentomatoes is a statistical one. Like baseball stats. No one cares if Joe Schmoe didn't get a hit on an overcast tuesday, until you see that he hasn't hit a ball on an overcast tuesday the last 300 times at bat. That makes a difference over time.

Rottentomatoes is similar. one or two reviews mean nothing. But when you get 50-150 reviews and all the responses tend to be the same, it makes a difference. I think it better reflects the truth about the quality of the movie.

[identity profile] absinthofheart.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

[identity profile] katie-can-draw.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
well...
hmm...
maybe we should go see harry potter instead ;-)

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Harry Potter movies. I think "Azkaban" is still in theaters.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I know...I'm literally, shocked by these poor reviews.

So sad...been waiting all summer for this movie.

[identity profile] pleasing-tint.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't care less about that guy's shit. I haven't seen any of his films and the sooner this one whispery trick pony fucks off, the better. The trailers have always reeked and ranked as the highest bullshit, in my opinion. Plus, he used Mel Gibson in a film and that guy is completely fucked. In the not so distant future, we'll have an island prison set up for hack filmmakers and the over-hyped. Quentin will be put to death there. Watch your step!

In good news, Criterion is releasing a 5 DVD box of John Cassavetes films. More art, less shit!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I certainly agree that mel gibson is some kind of crazy man. Until Signs, I had never seen a Mel Gibson movie all the way thru on purpose. No, not even Braveheart which every person i know gasps in horror when i say that.

But I thought Unbreakable was really fantastic. Normally, I like Night's work very much. And people can't really help it if they become popular and get hyped. The film industry is a business who markets and sells art. it's really a horrible concept at best, but you can't always blame the artist for that.

[identity profile] pleasing-tint.livejournal.com 2004-07-31 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well I got carried away there. It's just that I get so pissed at all the hype (and frequently it is the artist's fault because he works in that system and MUST sell tickets to keep working there) and I feel (perhaps wrongly) that there are so many more beautiful pictures to be seen. It was always a point of contention with friends as well as I refused to see 'popular' films they thought were excellent because I wanted to try to find films that I was interested in...you know? Ones I'd read about. Ones I still want to see. You only have so many movie watching hours in your life...why waste them?

When the latest trailer actually included a whispering child clip, I actually laughed out loud because I thought it had to be a parody. Maybe self-parody if the most sincere form of pulling the wool...dunno.

It shouldn't come off sounding insulting, although I know it does, but I don't really care what people like. I tend to wait a week after seeing films to see just how well they (or the characters) have resonated with me. Even crafty and clever films like 'Adaptation' don't hold me nearly as close as Werner Herzog or more 'passionate' filmmakers...sometimes even low budget shit has something so interesting or creative that I'm kept by it. It's the same with music. Anyway, like what you like. Believe me, I like a lot of shit as well.

[identity profile] lostsatellite.livejournal.com 2004-07-30 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmm...I think I may still decide to see this one in the theater despite the negative reviews...if anything else, it would give me a reason to see Joaquin Phoenix on the screen for about two hours...and I guess I'm more curious about seeing this movie than any of the other ones that happen to be showing in my area...I may turn out to not like it, but maybe I'll like it just fine...
