Dahmer Review: Contains tiny Spoilers
Greetings!
As several of you have inquired, here is my review of the Dahmer movie that comes out on Tuesday (ain't I cool? thanx Ltoad).
Let me begin by saying I did not have high hopes for this film. The back of the box called him a "monster" and eluded to "Starting somewhere between popular legend and historical fact". That usually means a grain of truth surrounded by bullshit.
I had a terrible day today, which was later brightened up by 8 hours of sleep and a visit from Pak_man78. So as the pic indicates, I was in a receptive mood.
This movie was fairly good watchin'. It is not what you will expect if you know your Dahmer history. You will not be given all the kill scenes you want, but there are some. Personally, I enjoy this trend of toning down the violence and making it more meanningful. The killings are pretty well done, and I think they borrowed that blood technique from Psycho '98. It was excellent. There is also a lot of "gay stuff", so if you're one of those weirdos who can't handle that, rent The Watcher instead. tee hee
Be advised that there are also plenty of scenes featuring drug and alcohol use.
This kid, Jeremy Renner who plays Jeff is a good one. At first, you wonder because he looks like a young Simon LeBon. I don't know about you but that is not Dahmer to me. It gives you some of the scenes you are expecting, but does not include things that I was waiting for most, like the capture scene, or trial stuff. But then, I'm a Law & Order fan.
Renner seems to have the awkward drunk guy thing down okay. But there is an underlying fear and self-loathing thats, almost reminscent of Norman Bates (Perkins's). Renner has a beleivability that helps builds the suspense, along with the tactic of not using actual victim names. You can't use your prior knowledge to deduce what comes next.
Bruce "Willard" Davison is interesting as pushy, but not diligent, Lionel Dahmer. Not showing the arrest and aftermath, however, keeps us from seeing Lionel scenes we recall from TV. This wasn't very long ago after all. Family scenes are kept to a minimum and Jeff's Mom is barely shown at all. This helps keep the films length to a comfy 102 minutes.
In summary, this will not be the best film you've seen all year. But you will find many things to enjoy. Many of you will not avoid this movie no matter what I tell you. So have at it...you FREAKS. And check in with me after you do.
